What did you have on your pancakes and what will you be giving up for Lent?

Just that really.

There doesn't seem to be any mention of Pancake Day anywhere.

Here in Germany we can't get away from it, although this year the parties and parades were subdued, and many cancelled because of Covid.

The parades in Cologne etc were converted into Peace demonstrations, but there were thousands out on the streets anyway.

Sago

Really dont like pancakes, growing up it was Shrove Tuesday then Ash Wednesday so we had to go to Mass and parade around with a dirty thumb mark on our heads.
I seem to remember Shrove Tuesday was also a day of fast and abstinence.
Certainly no meat was eaten.
Tonight’s dinner is a lamb tagine.
I will burn in Hell ?

I wouldn't worry Sago I think there will be a lot of us there with you. My friend always had the Ash wednesday mark and I had to do the Non conformist walk around the village singing hymns at Whitsentide. I'm afraid once a non conformist always a non conformist in most things especially if you marry one as I did.smile

What is the point of giving anything up? I’ve never understood unless you all donate to charity the money saved. We didn’t have pancakes yesterday needless to say but perhaps will sometime soon just because we like them.

For some it might simply be an exercise in will power or self sacrifice. For others, giving up something for those few weeks or doing extra exercise might bring health benefits.

Some ideas on here benefit others directly, but not everything has to be done for charity. Though when I cut down on screen time and do something useful with the time saved it’ll include knitting for the premature baby unit and checking jigsaws for our local charity jigsaw festival. So good for my self-discipline and good for them. Win win.

Lemon and sugar; delicious! I looked at the Gransnet recipe. I hope no-one tried to follow it. They omitted adding half the milk at the beginning; I imagine anyone trying to mix a load of flour with just two eggs would have had mixture flying across the kitchen if using an electric whisk!
Nothing for Lent; I hate being told to do something/anything, especially by a church.

I did not have pancakes - instead I had the traditional Swedish Shrove Tuesday food - a Semla! Basically a fluffy bun flavoured with cardamom, hollowed out and filled with almond paste and then topped with whipped cream .... mmmm

It was all going so well until this post appeared! When others have been open about their religious views, pathetic is an unkind word to use.

I was going to cheat and use the Lidl pancake mix in a bottle but didn’t follow the golden rule - don’t expect items to still be there on your next visit. First year I haven’t had pancakes.

I can remember giving up red Smarties for lent as a child. The Glaswegian nun, who initiated my interest in history, was keen on end of the world scenarios. I used to eat the red Smarties first just in case the world ended before I got to them.

I was quite disappointed when, as an adult, I realised they all tasted the same though the red ones made a good lipstick.

Lemon & sugar, and bananas & caramel sauce. Delicious! I won't be giving up anything for Lent, never do.

Forgot it was pancake day but then I make them a lot for my gd.
Don’t give up anything for lent I am not religious.

I couldn't be bothered making pancakes just for me, and I'm trying to lose some weight anyway. I just have a sprinkle of sugar, if I have any.
I'm not giving up anything for Lent, but I'm going to put something for the food bank in a box each day, and donate them at Easter. Much more sensible.

Raspberries and ice cream!

Ash Wednesday is the start of Lent in the lead up to Easter when Jesus rose from the dead.
Give to charity without talking about it, is what we’re taught.
Quietly give to good causes and do good deeds.
Lent is about giving.
Gransnet can be challenging when our thoughts and typing fingers go into action via a ‘nom du plume’
I’m going to try to stay off Facebook and if I break my pledge, it’s charity that will benefit.
Hope you all have a good Lent.

Pancakes, lemon juice and sugar. Lovely! smile Rather than 'give something up' for lent, I like to help someone, give extra support to someone. A friendly phone call, a friendly letter, most people could do this. If everybody did this just think what a nicer, kinder place we would all be living in.

I love pancake day followed by Ash Wednesday and onto Lent. Attended at vigil this year for Ukraine at the local Salvation Army which was followed by gorgeous pancakes. Lent gives me a chance to slow down a bit and reflect on my life and faith and how I can be of service to the world and others. It does me good and I love lemon and sugar on my pancakes too!

Oat pancakes topped with Nutella and banana

We’re giving up alcohol for lent, it won’t be a problem for me, OH will struggle, if he cuts down to a pint on Saturday, that’s OK, a good effort.

I'm on an eat healthy diet to loose weight so no cakes, biscuits or puds but I succumbed to two small pancakes and had a banana and salted caramel sauce between them.

I had lemon and sugar as always. The thing I aim to give up for Lent is my lethargy. By that I mean my inability to just get on with certain tasks I keep putting off. I have selected about 3-4 and aim to martyr myself finally getting on with them. Then I can polish my halo on Easter Sunday and feel very smug with myself, thus undoing my Lent sacrifice. I actually think having periods such as Lent helps people to focus in on certain things they want to change whether they are believers or not.

Ailidh,
What a sweet answer. I'm sure your sacrifice will help cleanse your your soul and help you focus on the important things in life. God bless.
