What did you have on your pancakes and what will you be giving up for Lent?

I forgot it was pancake tuesday and am giving up nothing because i am an atheist. I will donate to the collection for Ukraine though.

I don't give up anything for lent as I'm not a practising Christian
Pancakes we always have with freshly squeezed lemon ? juice and sugar

I'm a lemon and sugar girl for pancakes and make them as we did as children. Proper batter left overnight.
Others in the house like fuit, syrup and cream on theirs.
For lent, giving up snacks in the evening. Over winter seem to have developed a habit similar to Gogglebox families of laying treats out on the coffee table. So none of that now..dinner, dessert, coffee and nothing other than drinks until breakfast.

Fresh lemon juice and maple syrup. Not religious though so not giving up anything.

Only found out it was pancake day yesterday afternoon! but have never missed a pancake day in nearly 50 years, this includes when I went to college and once made pancakes for 30 people(as I knew how) and even when travelling abroad(including tent camping in Australia) as my husband would not forgive me. Only when desperate have I resorted to pancake mix as they are so easy to make. Must have a decent based small pan and use sunflower oil to cook when and I heat the pan empty to start.
yesterday as no lemons in the house I used vanilla sugar, oranges and passion fruit.
My son got used to pancakes being there from a young age and was amazed to find when travelling in the US they were available for breakfast and now he makes them regularly for his son but serves with maple syrup or honey!

I forgot so having them today !

I have never liked pancakes and won`t give up anything i enjoy.

Always seem to produce a messy dud one before I get into the rhythm, I call them the practice ones …I wonder why?

I think this happens when your pan isn't hot enough. I always used to get a 'practice' one too, this year I waited till the pan was smoking before putting any batter in and it worked.

Had a total flop last year making pancakes for DGS (I've still no idea what went wrong as I've been making them for decades with no problem) Tried again yesterday, pancakes were absolutely perfect. DGS likes honey on his, we had lemon and sugar, as usual.

I'm now wondering why lemon & sugar seems to be the standard accompaniment for pancakes. Does anyone know the history behind it?

Well, having bought a lemon a week too early, so used it for something else, I then forgot it completely last night. So no pancakes. But I will make some this evening. I'm hopeless!
Lemon is my favourite.

Can't get past lemon and sugar ever. Watching news programmes.

Grandson had a pancake at nursery at snack time. He was most impressed with this because usually it's fruit or veg.

He asked for more at dinner time and I obliged, at which point he refused to eat them. Ungrateful!

Just for fun I did gluten free pancakes, they turned out surprisingly good, more fragile but did stay whole. Served them with lemon juice and sugar, OH did recognise them as GF then scoffed the lot and asked for more - job done!.

Giving up chocolate for Lent, as have had a bit of a craving for it lately. So no more until Easter Sunday, by then I’m hoping it will be to sweet to eat.

We had our pancakes filled with prawns, then with lemon and sugar (and some with golden syrup for DH). I had five.

I’m going to have a go (yet again) at limiting my screen time during Lent and doing something useful instead.

I don’t do pancake day as such any more, but when Gdcs are staying, as they were very recently, every day is a pancake day for Gdd1 - ‘Nutella* pancakes please, Granny!’

I should probably give various things up for Lent, but I don’t mind admitting that I won’t.

*I really ought to give up finishing the jar of Nutella with a spoon!

That was my understanding too. I've never heard of Shrove Tuesday being a day of Fast and Abstinence.

That can't be right. The Germans in (very Catholic) Cologne call the season (culminating in a wild Extended weekend from the Thursday leading up to Shrove Tuesday) ... well, they call it Carneval. The Carne part refers to meat. So you would indulge in meat and rich foods and drink. This would fit in with the yearly cycle in the Northern hemisphere when stores could be plundered as soon fresh produce would be available with the approach of Spring and young animals are born.

From Ash Wednesday on, i.e. during Lent, is when you're supposed to fast, not eat meat etc. I can't imagine that the tradition is much different in Protestant churches because it is based on the 40 days that Jesus (and, I think, before him, his cousin John) spent fasting and doing penance in the desert.

We’ve not had pancakes today due to DH birthday but when we have them we like bacon mushrooms and cheese in them and then covered in baked beans. Yummy!

I had lemon and sugar on mine, DH had maple syrup and squirty cream.
I don't give anything up; instead I choose a new charity at the beginning of Lent and support it for a year. This year it is Action Duchenne who support families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

KittyLester I stand corrected, it was Ash Wednesday and every Friday during Lent.
It probably felt like a fast day for me as I don’t like pancakes?
