Should Russia be allowed to take part in the Paralympics?

Exactly that really. They were allowed to take part with a positive drug test, but this is much more serious.

The management committee said it would be against their constitution to ban the Russians because the paralympics are about inclusivity. I dont think this technical line of argument being put forward by the talking heads is gaining much sympathy from the rank and file athletes. Some have said they will not compete against the Russians even if they do pose as "neutral".

Definitely not !

Sadly, no.

I'm very surprised. They seem to be oblivious.

Still time to change their minds.

I’ve just listened to the conditions for the Russian Paralympians.
Not fighting under their own flag, not being shown on the medal tables.
Who believes that Putin won’t publish the tables whether the Olympic Committee do or not?
Pathetic response from the Olympic Committee!

I think it is a great shame that the stand taken by some sports (notably football) is not applied universally to all sports.

It's a NO from me too!

Calendargirl Wed 02-Mar-22 20:36:45

No.

What do the ‘legal reasons’ mean? Putin’s invasion of the Ukraine is hardly ‘legal’, is it?

MiniMoon Wed 02-Mar-22 19:31:00

NO!

Lovetopaint037 Wed 02-Mar-22 19:30:12

No definitely not. We are supposed to be sending a message to Putin. Russia has always put great store in the highly trained athletes they use to gain prestige for their country. Also, why should the world be insulted by the presence of representations of this evil regime. Plus the security of the athletes would cost money which would better used to benefit Ukraine.

No.

Is this a first - a unanimous GN thread smile

Grandmadinosaur Wed 02-Mar-22 19:24:14

Absolutely not.

Sparklefizz Wed 02-Mar-22 19:21:18

mumofmadboys Wed 02-Mar-22 19:01:52

Definitely not!

netflixfan Wed 02-Mar-22 18:54:02

No. Just because they have difficulties does not mean that they don’t support Putin.

mokryna Wed 02-Mar-22 18:51:17

No, but would the athletes understand why. No again. They have been brainwashed. They will not be allowed to speak out when they return as their families will be threatened.

I can speak of my time working in China. The people I worked with would not watch my tv news programs nor listen to how we had choice of candidates at an election. While I was there, there floods with some people not surviving, I was told that they had already been warned that the foreigners would tell lies to unbalance the government.

nadateturbe Wed 02-Mar-22 18:29:02

GreyKnitter Wed 02-Mar-22 18:25:53

Def not!

Redhead56 Wed 02-Mar-22 18:23:23

NO sport it's very low down in priorities now. They should not be included in anything whatsoever.

Rosie51 Wed 02-Mar-22 18:23:01

If Russia is taking part I'd hope the UK and other countries would boycott the games. Unfortunately I don't see that happening. There will be cries of 'it's sport not politics'

Rosie51 Wed 02-Mar-22 18:19:46

Agree, no they shouldn't. Feel sad for the athletes but GSM has phrased it perfectly but a message has to be sent to Putin that he has turned his country into a pariah state

seacliff Wed 02-Mar-22 18:16:00

NO!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 02-Mar-22 18:14:08

No. I feel sorry for the athletes, but a message has to be sent to Putin that he has turned his country into a pariah state regardless of how many of the people actually disagree with his policies.

Callistemon21 Wed 02-Mar-22 18:13:10

Whitewavemark2

Well they are.

So I think every athlete should refuse to take part if it means competing against a Russian.

Yes, I agree.

The Russian Paralympians may be blameless but someone has to make a stand if the Paralympic Committee has failed to uphold any moral values.
