Items to aid Ukrainian refugees

Just listening to an appeal on my local radio for items to donate for collections. One of the things he said they were desperate for is candles. An obvious idea really but one I hadn’t thought of so I will go and get some today. I wonder if there are any other things that don’t immediately spring to mind?

Sanitary items for wonen. Batteries.

Yes I just heard that on TV. Am also thinking of little books for the children.

Hi Grandmadinosaur
This is a list of the things that a local pub is asking for to send
(It’s The White Swan in Littleover - you may know it!)

the collection points in my local area have lists of what is needed. Local facebook is a good place to find these lists. No point in second-guessing, better to target actual needs. I do know that headtorches, torches and batteries were on the list. I did not see candles. Beware of scammers, they come out of the woodwork. We have shops and the council building which are collection points, also reputable local businesses

Thank you Fanny lots to go on there.

Yes I know The White Swan very well. Frequented it quite often in my younger days.

This is a list of what one collection point in our city is suggesting: flashlights, batteries, power banks, raincoats, thermal blankets, sleeping mats, thermoses, first aid kits, bandages, plasters, cotton wool, paracetamol, anti-diarrhoea drugs, painkillers (no prescription drugs or any out-of-date drugs), burns cream (e.g. panthenol), antiseptics, sore throat medications, cough medications. I hadn’t thought of anti diarrhoea drugs or raincoats (maybe waterproof ponchos) but it makes sense.

In our local area we have been told they have enough clothes and bedding. They are asking for nappies, baby formula milk, first aid items and batteries.

Our local Polish centre has been inundated with goods and have now set up a just giving page as the logistics of shipping such large amounts are getting harder.
But they were looking for:
Torches plus batteries, nappies, sudocrem, sanitary products, bandages, plasters, long life baby food and powdered milk, thermals, new underwear for all ages, thermal blankets and gloves.

Instead of ordinary torches with batteries that will run out, wouldn`t wind up torches be a better idea?

I donated this morning via a Red Cross charity shop because I was told all the aid charities prefer money rather than items because of the difficulties in transportation and processing goods through customs.
They may need goods when refugees arrive in this country to furnish and equip accommodation.

I think as eazybee says. The donations are well meant but difficult to store, handle and transport.
The Disasters Emergency Fund are appealing for financial donations which they distribute via individual charities and their partners working locally.

I donated to the DEF earlier this morning; and their website says that the Government are matching everything raised pound for pound up to 2 million

?Best way to go Fanny

GrannySomerset Thu 03-Mar-22 15:36:20

£20 million, Fanny, so every £ we give is worth £2 - plus gift aid we’ll!

GrannySomerset Thu 03-Mar-22 15:37:05

Bother. I typed “Plus Gift Aid as well” - blooming auto correct.

FannyCornforth Fri 04-Mar-22 07:51:24

Yes, thank you GrannyS
It wasn’t a typo! I actually thought at the time; ‘2 million, that’s not very much…’ hmm
