I am thoroughly fed up.
The events in Ukraine terrify me and reduce me to tears. It hasn’t stopped raining all day, and conscious of the increase in my monthly energy direct debit which arrived today, I am also cold!
So, I am turning to my usual “go to” when I need distraction (not chocolate or alcohol as it’s Lent for the former and a bit early for the latter.)
No - cooking and baking.
I am going to make a huge pot of Courgette and Goats Cheese soup in the pressure cooker and then Nadiya’s Olive Oil and Apple cake to take with me when I visit D, SIL and DGS tomorrow.
Thus satisfying the nurturing urge, heating up the kitchen a bit and taking my mind off all the dreadful things going on in the world.
If there’s a decent play on Radio 4 so much the better.
What does it for you?

I feel the same about world events. I am extremely upset and worried. I have turned my attention to the lovely Spring flowers that have suddenly appeared. Later on I'll enjoy some wine and a meal with DD and DGS. I won't watch the news but have a good book which I've been meaning to read for ages. I love the sound of your apple cake Eileen.

A good book. Something light on TV and a few glasses of Pinot Grigio in the evening.

Same here Kate. Plus getting out into the garden and seeing the spring flowers and listening to the birds singing.

Yes that too GSM. I will go for a walk later. We have a canal at the back of our house and, although we are in Birmingham, it's lovely to see the wildlife on the water.

Yes, it’s lovely to see them carrying on as usual, blissfully unaware.

Kate I did a bit of gardening earlier and sat outside as the sun was lovely (it's dark and cloudy now). I could hear a robin trilling away high up in a tree and thought he or she sounded so happy, possibly calling for a mate as I could hear another one answering in the distance.

Gentle tv has recently helped me in the shape of a programme called Hope Street on BBC1 iplayer. It was recommended on here. Used to love drama but currently find all of them much too explicit and violent. A walk by my local river is also a gentle soother and the temperature rising a bit in general makes this even more attractive. No news at all for me currently but I do watch the newspaper reviews each night. That's sufficient for me. I'm also lucky to have lunching friends and they're starting to emerge from their covid cocoons. Roll on full glorious blossoming Spring!

I've been watching Animal Cops Phoenix at 2.00 channel 17. It's addictive.

I feel very shaken up and upset by it all. I keep deciding not to watch the news and Twitter then just have to look to see if the situation has improved in some way. No luck so far.
However, a nice lunch and chat with DH and DS was a pleasant distraction. The raspberry and chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream helped too.
Back to worrying again though.

Everything is so worrying at the moment and today it’s pouring down and grey so for me it would be a cup of tea or a glass or two of red wine and Only Fools and Horses on tv.

Even a short walk, and even in the rain, raises the spirits I find. It feels warmer when you come in too.
Meditation works for me. I am aware of thoughts of course, and anxious thoughts appear, but I have gradually trained myself that I can observe but don’t have to engage with them. Everything is transient and passes in the end.

Some pleasant occupations noted and on a day lie yesterday these did lift my spirits but any of the outdoor ones would involve waders and souwesters today so in the absence of a DH or any of our AC who all live too far away, it’s the baking and the soup for me this afternoon!

How lovely Callistemon. We had a robin last year who would watch me sweep the drive. It stayed very close and I chatted to it.
The first thing we hear each morning are ducks and geese. We have to hold on to such things don't we?
