Nurse Gladys Emmanuel was one of the dominant women created by writer Roy Clarke, who also created Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet!) in Keeping Up Appearances and Nora Batty in Last of the Summer Wine. There must be interesting psychological reasons for this.

Arkwright was always up for a bite of supper and whatever else may be on the menu at Nurse Gladys's house. Lovely sitcom. RIP Nurse Gladys.
