I wonder if the Queen is cancelling her Royal appointments because she is ill or is it because she is missing Prince Phillip being at her side supporting her. She very rarely went anywhere without him.

You can consider me the bad guy now if you like.

Any population that wants their country to be represented/headed/led by a woman who has to work until her mid nineties needs to take a good hard look at itself.

I have nothing but sympathy for a 95 year old woman who has been brought up to think that the country will fall apart if she's not reading her mail every morning. What a life.

Well, we could be like the USA and want our country to be represented by an old guy with early signs of dementia (both Reagan and Biden) or a lying, cheating, low-life (Trump). Personally, I'll take Queenie any day (but I still think it's time she retired).

Or, we could be like Ukraine and have a Head of State that is brave as a lion and personally leads his people through thick and thin. Or we could be like South Africa and have a HoS that unites the people and leads them in reconciliation. Or we could be like Eire and have 2 subsequent Heads of State that bring their country into the modern world and make life more equal for everyone.

But no, let's stick with people in jewelled hats, because we can't really be trusted to decide on our own leaders, eh?

Perhaps everyone should hold back on comments like "mental frailty", "loose cannon" and so on until after that Jubilee in June. She may be busy even as we post, on an announcement about stepping back a bit (further back?) and letting Charles do more.

Anniebach Mon 14-Mar-22 12:55:23

Agree Elegran such intolerance for the aged , it’s frightening

I can't imagine her becoming a loose cannon, at any age.

CarlyD7 Mon 14-Mar-22 12:50:13

Her age, losing her husband, the upset caused by the "spares" (Harry and Andrew); her recent bout of Covid, her frailty, and who knows what underlying health issues are going on. It all adds up to - she needs to let go of the crown and hand it to Charles, and go into a graceful retirement, still being in the background for help and advice if she is asked. BUT I suspect she simply doesn't know what else to do with her life. She has been Queen since the age of 25 and she enjoys it. I'm not sure how she would cope with retirement but I do think it's way past the time she did (perhaps after her jubilee celebration in June).

Yes I agree about The Queen Mother she was every where until she died.

She didn't have the added pressure of having an Andrew, Harry & Meghan, like thorns in her side, to contend with. Our Queen is also a Mum, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother and the troubles those 3 have piled on her have finally taken their toll.

Anniebach Mon 14-Mar-22 12:48:33

My sympathy is with parents of those who speak of ‘loose cannons’, ‘inability to walk ‘ etc.

A loose cannon? I have a neighbour aged 96 who works at the
volunteer Bureau , helps people with forms, accompanies to
Surgery , takes their pets to the vets.

Still gets in and out of a car, then?

I think she is perhaps becoming more frail mentally. She is 95, and, despite people saying that she is still sharp as a tack, I doubt this is true. I fear she may be a bit of a loose cannon in public.

I find this offensive

cc Mon 14-Mar-22 12:43:19

I am not particularly a royalist (nor a republican) and I have nothing but admiration for a working woman in her mid-90s. And don't forget that it isn't just public appearances but also working her way through the government boxes that are delivered with monotonous regularity.
Family problems are really none of our business, it's a shame the press keep raking them up, it must be very aggravating. About time we stopped following the H and M gossip, it really is irrelevant to anyone but those directly involved.

Surely even an atheist can understand honouring a solemn promise?

I believe that the promise made on her 21st birthday, before she was crowned, was to serve her country and people all her life, whether it be short or long. Which everyone is taking to mean the she has to be Queen till she drops.

But she didn't say "I'll be your Queen forever". Perhaps her country and people could be best served by her handing over all the responsibilities of state to another person and having the rest of her life to have a rest?

If I worked for Age UK I wouldn't expect any of the people I worked with to have a job that entitled them to unprecedented deference and a job for life even though they couldn't fulfil its requirements any more. And I wouldn't expect them to get to decide what the requirements are, just based on what they were able to do.

Surely even a Christian can understand that? hmm (That's sarcasm, BTW)

Oh, sorry, she might do.
Apologies.
I can’t believe how confusing the situation re the Royal dogs is confused

I read somewhere the other day that she is now too frail to walk her beloved corgis. Something that she had great delight from. She is grieving for her husband and then had the added stress caused by her son and grandson. I wish her well

She hasn’t got any corgis!!

Missiseff Mon 14-Mar-22 12:27:31

Lol. She's 96 ish isn't she? Enough said.

Anniebach Mon 14-Mar-22 12:26:37

I agree, sad that some are intolerant of old age , heaven forbid they should work for Age U.K.,

nanna8 Mon 14-Mar-22 12:20:20

Well she is 97 years old, not many would be walking anything at that age. Not many would care much about anything, either and she is to be admired for still caring about her country.

Just illustrates that the monarch can be incapable of fulfilling their role yet still hold their position and all the bowing, scraping and forelock tugging that comes with it.

coastalgran Mon 14-Mar-22 12:09:31

I think that she misses Prince Philip and his guidance and advice in troubled times as well as good times. The Queen Mother was a widow for a lot longer at an earlier age and married for less time to the King. Lately she has looked tired and a bit fed up with the modern world and what it has brought. She will do her duty as she promised to the best of her ability at almost 96, not many can do that.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 14-Mar-22 11:58:08

No, I don't understand, you're right Annie.

I don't understand at all.
