Table Cloths - old fashioned?

I still like to use a table cloth. It offers a little protection to the table and is a cheerful sight. I have several different patterns and prefer polyester cotton as they are easier to take care of. I also have two beautiful hand embroidered cloths, which were made by my two grandmothers and given to us when we were engaged. One has hyacinths and the other more summery flowers so I swap them according to the season and have them on a side table in the living room with ornaments on. They are a lovely reminder of my grandmothers. However, I seems to be increasingly difficult to buy table cloths. In common with many items they seem to be seen as completely old hat. Does anyone else still like to use them? What other once everyday items are now seen as completely passé? Incidentally, I still think tea tastes better when made in a pot and treat myself to drinking it from cups and saucers from time to time. I’m only in my mid-fifties. Am I really an ancient relic already?

*it seems

No, I like and use them when I so desire. Mind you, I wouldn't ever know what's in fashion in any genre. I just do my own thing all the time.

I still use a tablecloth. It catches the crumbs from the toast and any splashes of gravy or yogurt. I always ‘shake the cloth’ after a meal.

It was a standing joke that when the GC were small and came for their tea after school that “Granny hasn’t put a clean tablecloth on because one of us is bound to spill something.”

I also still use antimicassars on my suite, don’t care if it makes me look like a throwback to Victorian times.

I only use one on special occasions, and sometimes that is only to hide an ugly home-made table extension .

My mum, 89, uses one all the time.

I don't recall my sons/dils ever using one.

I love tablecloths and use ones which were embroidered by grandma, I don't mind if I'm thought old-fashioned.

I wonder if they may be found at market stalls, those which sell net curtains, cushion covers, and the like?

I always use one for occasions to protect the table. Normally we just use mats. I’m going to order a wipeable one from Amazon to protect the table when we have friends for an Indian because it can stain. When we have people over we use a China tea pot that belonged to my grandma.

I use a tablecloth to protect the table. Except for a special occasion I like the wipeable variety, not keen on ironing!

Squiffy Thu 17-Mar-22 12:57:05

I'm with you GSM! They actually make some quite pretty lacey wipeable tablecloths. Though, having said that, one of my GS had a high old time picking at the lace that overhung the table until there was hardly any left one end of the table!

I use a plain white one in the dining room on the wooden table. I don’t use one in the kitchen on the kitchen table.

I've got loads of tablecloths, used sometimes until the table is given over to DIY etc. I've never bought one, all handed down by mother. Linen with embroidery, damask, drawn thread work, even a Coronation one printed with pictures. The trouble is they need a lot of careful laundry! Coronation one may come in handy this summer!

Charity shops often have lovely embroidered table cloths.
And at home, it’s always a pot of tea in the morning, sometimes again early evening. Drink mostly water in between, and the occasional cup of tea made in a big mug.

When we have a houseful of friends or family I put our old kitchen table at the end of the dining table. It is slightly lower and narrower so I had a board cut to put on top which brings it up to exactly he same height and width. This means we can seat up to sixteen people.

I have two cloths which cover the extra long table - one a plain dark green, which looks smart with our white crockery and is lovely for Christmas and the other a patterned pvc cloth which is easy to keep clean.

I use a table cloth at Christmas, it’s got a Christmas theme. I have a beauty with spring flowers I use for special occasions. Otherwise it’s the thick oil cloth wipe down

On my Victorian circular side table, it’s a series of hand embroidered, one of which I made along with mum

None of my children have table cloths

BlueBelle Thu 17-Mar-22 13:15:38

I ve never ever used a table cloth my Mum and Dad did even for a snack meal and my Nan/ grandad did too but I never have I ve got a lovely wooden (not polished) table and it seems a lot easier to wipe the table than keep washing table clothes I don’t think any of my children do either

Casdon Thu 17-Mar-22 13:16:08

Next sell them, so they can’t be old fashioned. A lot of the more modern ones are wipe clean material though, even if they look like cotton.

Restaurants don’t always use tablecloths and the noise echoes terribly.

I use them on my antique French polished dining table but not on the kitchen one if it is being used for eating.

Come to France Musicgirl where they are sold in the local shops and markets.

I still use them occasionally, and always on Christmas Day! My abiding childhood memory is Mum gathering the table cloth up and passing it to me to shake outside .

fairfraise Thu 17-Mar-22 13:37:10

I also have a beautiful design Collier and Campbell Christmas cloth, huge with matching napkins. It dates from the 1970s when I bought it for my mother. She passed it on to me, when she moved. Its used every Christmas.

They are definitely 'old hat' but do what you like! I have two lace tablecloths, one quite old, but I never get them out any more. I can't see the point, it is easier to wipe the table than wash a tablecloth. My dining table has an amazing surface so the wood must be coated with something I guess. It does not need protection and has survived children doing all manner of things on it for the last 35 years. Looks as good as new!

Shirleyw Thu 17-Mar-22 13:57:32

I like crisp white linen table cloths when entertaining ...napkins to match.....otherwise have various coloured/patterned TC's. John Lewis also sells them. I dont keep them on table all the time though, put them on at meal times.

Beswitched Thu 17-Mar-22 14:17:18

We've just brought loads of them to the Charity shop when clearing out my late mother's house. She hadn't used them for years. My sister kept some of the hand embroidered ones and I kept the Christmas one.

I would like them to come back in fashion in restaurants. They are good for absorbing noise.

MiniMoon Thu 17-Mar-22 14:18:12

I always use a tablecloth, in both dining room and kitchen. I have a posh dark green one for special occasions.

I only started using one in the kitchen after DGS 3 tapped on the pine table with a hexagonal salt pot and made lots of tiny dimples in it.

JaneJudge Thu 17-Mar-22 14:21:44

I love the idea of using white linens but I just have an oilcloth one

Beanutz2115 Thu 17-Mar-22 14:34:45

No, I don’t even have room for a dining table. So no table cloths for me. I also think it’s an out of date thing now. I would much rather have a table I can wipe over with a clean cloth.
