I was watching an Agatha Christie last night. Two of the characters in the story looked absolutely nothing like the way they were described in the book.
They were quite the opposite in fact. The one who was meant to be stunningly beautiful was played by quite an ordinary looking actress, and the one who was meant to be very ordinary looking was played by a gorgeous looking young woman.
Does anyone else hate when this happens? It's always a bit disappointing I find.
You mean Jenna Coleman ?

The actor playing Harry Palmer in ITV's current adaptation of The Ipcress File is no Michael Caine, that's for sure....
Son of Michael maybe?
Looks about 12, studying for his GCSE’s?
Given that Michael Caine is 89, more likely grandson or great grandson!
Although I like Tom Hanks as an actor, (imho) I think he miss casted in the Da Vinci Code films as the lead character Robert Langdon .
In fact compared to the books, the films were very light weight (again imho).

I actually meant ‘son of Michael, as he was back in 1963 or whenever the original film was’.
Quite agree now in GGS territory!
Margaret Rutherford was totally miscast as Jane Marple.
Joan Hickson was sublime.
And how about Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins? Okay, he did look the part but that ‘Cockney’ accent ...
?
Lily James as the second Mrs de Winter was also all wrong. Not only was she not plain and mousy, she also had a pretty dazzling wardrobe of clothes and played the character as a sexy and confident young woman.
The whole point of the book was missed, really.
Also the actress who played Fanny in last year's revamp of The Pursuit of Love was far too pretty for the part.
Tom Cruise is the most unlikely person to play Jack Reacher. I tried to watch him but a voice inside my head keeps screaming Noooooooo ?
Apologies Maw, you are quite right, silly me!!, But you understand what I mean, still fee she was miscast...

I watched a film about Iris Murdoch, played by Nichol Kidman, when young and Judy Dench when older. They were both brilliant. Anyone else see it? The actors who played her husband were good too.
We started watching this last night, but didn’t take to it, so switched off after 10 minutes. Long enough to see the ‘ young’ Iris was played by Kate Winslett, not Nichole Kidman.
I watched "Iris" on Thursday night and was so entranced I watched it again on Friday morning. All four actors were so wonderful and Kate Winslett and Hugh Bonneville were completely believable as young versions of Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent. Such a tragic situation though, watching such a brilliant mind unravel.
Agatha Raisin has so many characters not a bit like those in the books that I can’t watch it. I agree Joan Hichson was absolutely brilliant as Miss Marple - she is the only iss Marple for me.
I didn't like Richard Chamberlaine in the Thornbirds.
Both the Rosses in the versions of Poldark I thought well chosen, but after seeing Lord of the rings I just laugh at the thought of Aiden Turners feet.
Colin Firth will always be the one and only Mr Darcy
I couldn’t breathe for laughing at Michael Caine’s dreadful accent in the 1971 film of ‘Kidnapped’.
Remember Barbra Streisand in Hello Dolly. Far too young for the part although very good.
IMO both the main characters in Our House (which I’d read) were badly miscast. Middleton looked much too young, and Compston just looked all wrong - not tall, smooth or suave enough.
After one episode, couldn’t be bothered to watch any more.
We recently watched some Scandi thing (only the first episode, it wasn’t very good) where the main female character was supposed to have a dd of 16 or 17, but looked only about 22 herself. Very irritating.
I agree with your irritation about female characters being played by actors who are younger.
The tv version of the Agatha Raisins books is a complete joke. In the books she is a middle aged, plain, dumpy, dark haired woman with good legs. She is not a blond bimbo. I imagine her as more like Vera. Why do we need to be seduced into watching programmes with pretty women. It makes me cross!
Me too. I’ve enjoyed the Agatha R books but couldn’t watch the TV series at all.,
Have you listened to Agatha Raisin on Radio 4?
Penelope Keith was THE Agatha, absolutely perfect. I could not bring myself to,watch the TV series, but the radio version was superb.
I enjoyed Agatha Raisin but I haven’t read the books.
I was prepared to dislike Jenna Coleman as Victoria but her acting was so convincing that I forgave her for being too pretty.
As an Outlander fan I am finding most of the characters are so different from the books I have stopped watching.
The best thing is the story I read about John Mortimer who when writing the Rumpole books ended up with Leo McKern’s voice in his head as he wrote.

Yes I agree. Ms Coleman is such a pretty, actually beautiful, woman. Victoria was very plain. Nothing wrong with that obviously. Most of us aren't oil paintings. But it does change the narrative.

Oh gosh Leo McKern. Could there ever be another Rumpole?
