Just thinking back to my first plane trip. It was in 1967 and we all had to sit at the front because of ‘weight distribution’ and it went over to Beauvais. Cheap as chips .
My most recent was to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and we got the very last plane back before they locked down for a couple of years because of Covid. I’m about to go on a plane again to Norfolk Island and feel quite nervous.

Heading toward 70years old and have never flown in an aeroplane, did have a flight in a helicopter once.

My worst flight was London to Sydney with a hyperactive, crawling, wakeful ten-month-old. Stuff of nightmares! That was in the early 1970s.

Flying was always very expensive until the 60 s/70 s and out of most peoples pockets, but thanks to Freddie Laker, we all got tye chance to visit the costa brava etc. Before then most of us went by car, if you had one, or train or coach or both.

We travelled all over europe by train, the ferry over to France was a holiday in itself, through to Paris, change to the night isleeper (couchettes) lots to see and there was nothing better than waking at dawn to see the sun lighting the top of the snowy mountains in Switzerland. We usually went further south to Italy.
My children were mid teen befire they first flew , much older than their peers, but we always enjoyed the train. Still do, but havnt been abroad by train for many years. Havnt been abroad either cone to that. Fingers crossed maybe later this year.

First flight was in 1972, aged 17, in the WRAF, in a 2-seater Chipmunk propellor plane. Strapped into a parachute which acted as the seat. I was terrified until we were airborne then I loved it, and was hooked on flying. Last flight would have been back from Venice in 2019.

First flight was the day after my 11th birthday, with my parents to Ibiza.

Many many air miles in between

Last flight was returning from visiting eldest AC in Kenya November 2019, with DH.

( lost count of the number of flights cancelled since the beginning of Covid pandemic)

First flight was 1968 from Newcastle to Isle of Man with my parents, when I was 17. Latest was coming from Dubai into Newcastle with DD2 in February 2020.

First flight was probably to Singapore in 1960 when I was 3 and DF was posted with the RAF. Last was 2011 back from Sydney where I had been working.

I remember a friend telling me when I was about 13 that she was going to Torremolinos for her holidays and being really envious, it all sounded so glamorous. DF pointed out that we had lived in three different countries and were due to leave for Cyprus in 3 months so why did I need to go to Torremolinos, but somehow the idea of packing for a holiday (we didn't have any holidays then, probably because we were usually already 'somewhere else' but that didn't occur to me!) and flying to a foreign place sounded so much more exotic than actually living abroad ?

First flight was Blackpool to the Isle of Man on a propeller plane, when I was about 14, in 1967. I sat with my dad (who had been a paratrooper) behind my mum and younger brother. Dad joked that the plane was so old it had outside toilets and the pilot was called Pontius! He leaned forward to say something to mum, who told him to get back, because he would rock the plane. We shared that flight with Giant Haystacks, the wrestler, who had the smallest hold-all being weighed in. It took 20 minutes to get there and 22 minutes coming back, because we had to fly round Blackpool Tower.
The last was to Lisbon to visit my son and his family, in 2019. I sat next to a young girl from Brazil, with a baby. She was the same age and had the same name as my daughter-in-law, her baby was the same age and had the same name as my grandson and her mother had the same name as me!

My 1st time on a plane was in 1980, to Jersey for our honeymoon. It only took about 45 minutes. The last time was 3 years ago, to Croatia. We stayed in Porec, a lovely little place.

First plane journey aged 11 to Palermo and then on to Malta. I thought it was exciting then and had yet to develop the phobias I have now. Last trip Seville 2019, then lockdown put paid to overseas travel but we have had some nice stays in Devon and Wales in the past two years.

I absolutely hate flying and developed a mental block about it for quite a few years even though by then I'd been as far as Australia. We had many years, when my children were young soon after the channel tunnel opened of just going across to France and driving down south. One year we crossed the border and drove all the way to Tuscany, too many hours in the car really with the constant refrain in the back of "are we nearly there yet?" but we always did our overnighters in a lovely French town or city. Then the kids begged to go to America, so we did. I did my best to supress my negativity about flying for their sakes. My GP gave me Diazepam to cope with long haul. I count myself lucky having been to so many wonderful places I still wish I could get to wherever without air travel, friends in Edinburgh often urged us to jump on the plane, "no way, long way round for me, drive or train" If only the world was still prehistoric Pangaea one land mass then I could jump on the train to go everywhere, even if it were to take aeons to get there!

My first flight was in the summer of 1976 to Seychelles. We lived there for two years. I can still remember the warm scent in the air as we clambered down the aircraft steps quite late at night. My last flight was flying back from Sydney in December 2019 after my niece’s wedding.

First flight was to Tunisia for honeymoon in 1972. Never been abroad before or on a plane.

Have a flight booked to Turkey in August but we’re trying to book something at Easter at the moment so might go before then

Mine was a BEA flight to Palma Majorca in 1967 I was ten. I was in tears the whole flight because my ears were so painful, I was deaf the whole week we were there. But we had a lovely holiday.

grannypiper Mon 21-Mar-22 16:07:26

Benidorm in 1979 and Heathrow to Glasgow January 2020

Jaxjacky Mon 21-Mar-22 16:31:23

My first would’ve been from Pakistan, my birthplace, to England aged about 1. First I remember was Venice to England after a school trip on SS Uganda.

To Belgium in 1967 when I was 12 for a holiday with my parents - it was their first flight too. smile I remember our local airport as a huge corrugated shed with a long table where we handed over our suitcases. Blankenberg was very exotic - chips with mayo, chocolates shaped like seafood, a glass boot filled with orange juice in a beerkeller. We went to Amsterdam for the day (I still have the little wooden clogs brooch somewhere) and saw the endless rows of graves at Dunkirk.

My last flight was home from Crete in late 2019. I really need to book another.

My first flight was to Spain in 1974, my best friend and I went on a package holiday there. As it was such an early flight I stayed with her at her Grandma's house and burnt a hole in her bedroom net curtains, smoking out of the window!

My last flight was in 2019 to Jo'burg where I met my daughter who'd been travelling there with friends. I wouldn't like to go to Jo'burg airport alone again, the taxi men were so pushy. We then had an internal prop flight to the bush. She was claustrophic on the plane as it was really, really small! Couldn't believe that we were fed on such a short flight, the steward was very professional.

Shandy57 Mon 21-Mar-22 16:56:35

I meant to say I suffered with my ears on my first flight too, really painful for days afterwards. I had a burst eardrum as a child when my Mum poked a qtip in my ear, and still have trouble. I've finally found some earplugs with 'holes' that regulate the pressure.

grandMattie Mon 21-Mar-22 17:03:18

First flight was long haul in 1963. M6 parents were in holiday from Mauritius where we lived to the UK. I was 15 and joined them during the school holidays, travelling alone. We stopped in Nairobi, Entebbe, Khartoum, Tripoli, Rome and Heathrow! It was epic.
Last was travelling business class from Delhi in January 2018, visiting my son. Unless you count a no land flight to see the Aurora two weeks ago!
I love flying.

Shandy57 Mon 21-Mar-22 17:07:13

Ladyleftfieldlover I got married in the Seychelles in '85. We made friends with the americans on the satellite base and had a ball. I was sad not to be able to bring my family, but the people who did very rudely ignored them after the wedding because they were on 'honeymoon'.

Framilode Mon 21-Mar-22 18:29:00

My first flight was in the 50's from London to Entebbe. We stopped in Rome, Cairo, Khartoum and then Entebbe. I remember the Ladies in the aircraft was full of Elizabeth Arden products for the passengers use. Also the Stewardess used to make up a bed for my brother and me with proper sheets and blankets.
I still have some of the menus from those flights. Beautifully designed on thick card with fantastic choices of food and wines finishing with turkish or virginia cigarettes. Those were the days.
My last flight was Ryanair to Seville. The sublime to the ridiculous.
However, I think the flight in the 50's cost about £100 for a child which was a lot of money then.. It must have been before 1956 because after Suez we used to land in Libya instead of Cairo. I still remember all the crashed WW2 planes lining both sides of the runway.

First flight was 1973, to join my husband (now Ex) here in the UK. Last flight 3 years ago to Dalaman (holiday with friends)

foxie48 Mon 21-Mar-22 19:01:17

First flight was in 1956 to Jersey on holiday with my parents. Plane was a Dakota and we returned after taking off because of "magneto" trouble (whatever that was). My last trip was to Barcelona with my younger daughter for a lovely "city break" in 2019. We had a lovely time and are off to Lisbon in April for another mother and daughter trip.

MissChateline Mon 21-Mar-22 19:08:53

1957 my dad was posted to Malta and we flew from some airforce base. I remember nothing about the flight but I do remember the ghastly inoculations prior to the flight.
Most recent flight was august 2020 to la Palma to visit my wife. Cut short the trip as everything started to shut down again.

crazyH Mon 21-Mar-22 19:10:27

foxie - how lovely. I’ve had a couple of Mum/daughter holidays. It was really lovely. I’m waiting for her to ask me again - she’s not in the best of moods atm (long story) - so I doubt it ?
Have a lovely trip to Lisbon….been there with my brother and s.I.l. Lovely city …
