Utility rooms do you have one/would you like one?

I have one, wish it was larger so I could have the tumble dryer in there, it lives in the garage.

Ive always had one until I downsized and I do miss it.
Some German friend ps have a laundry room upstairs where they have washing machine, dryer, hanging drier rails and ironing board etc.
At first I thought it odd but it makes perfect sense as most laundry starts upstairs and has to be carried down for washing and ironing then back up for putting away.
They also had a duvet each on their king size bed, no more tugging at the duvet when your partner is hogging it ?
During the day they were neatly rolled up on the foot of the bed which also gave the bed a good airing before being slept in again.

Yes, we have one. It is the main thoroughfare to the bathroom, workshop and garden so I try to keep it reasonably tidy.

It contains the washing-machine, dryer (only used in the winter for bedclothes and heavy clothing), the freezer our outdoor shoes, laundry soap and bathtowels - as it is adjacent to the bathroom.

I find it useful and so nice to be able to shut a door and not have to listen to the washing-machine when it is on.

My tumble dryer sits atop the washing machine in the garage alongside the second fridge freezer as my kitchen is so small and definitely no utility room!

Our bungalow does not have room for a utility room, but I have a utility area in the back of the garage (which is too small to get a modern car in!) We had our washing machine plumbed in in there and the tumble drier next to it with a worktop over. I had some laminate flooring left over so put it in there and until recently we had a spare fridge freezer out there. The only time it's a pain is when it's really cold or pouring with rain but I'm thinking of having and RSJ and a door put in so I can access the garage from the house. There is a paved area outside the back door of the garage which has a washing line and is not part of the main garden so this arrangement works well. I like not having the noisy washing machine in the kitchen and an area that can be a messy dumping place if needed.

When we had an unexpected additional baby, back in 1980, it caused a bedroom crisis. The best we could afford was to add an extension behind our small kitchen, which became a bedroom for eldest DS until he left home for Uni, 2 years later, and never moved back in.
It then became somewhere for the boiler, washer and fridge/freezer, with some extra cupboards to store stuff that wasn't used much.
When DH became infirm we had a downstairs loo installed, which I also now find handy, though DH is no longer with us.
It has been a very useful space, over the years.

I put one in my integral garage because my kitchen floor is wooden and the noise of my washing machine on full spin dancing around the kitchen was ridiculous. I also find the sink handy in there if I've been gardening or had the dog out for a muddy walk.

Our 'utility room' is a passageway to the back door and hosts all sorts of stuff eg animal food, electrical items , detergents etc plus a sink, washing machine and a dryer. The cats are fed there and there is a collection of brushes, mops and buckets!!! And it needs a good clean out at some point - not my favourite occupation!

I would love one.
The washing machine is integrated into the kitchen layout but the tumble dryer is in the garage which, although hardly ever used, is a faff taking the wet washing out around the side of the house to the garage, and back again, especially if raining.

Yes, we have one and it is very useful. It gives access to the downstairs loo and to the wine cellar as well as hosting the washing machine, recycling boxes and logs for the log burner. There is also a full size cupboard for tools and paint tins, etc. A great thing to have.

Moved ALOT had utility rooms and love them, also love a downstairs loo. Currently live in a very old council house so have none of those, had to have a stair lift installed to use the only loo, upstairs

I used to have one and loved it, now I don’t have one and half space where cupboards could be is taken up with appliances..

I would love a utility room and a walk in pantry. I have neither but would adore both.

I don't have one in this house and, by golly, I miss it. I have a very large downstairs loo which houses the washing machine and the tumble dryer is in the garage.
This is the first house for yonks that we haven't had one. They are so useful particularly if you have pets.

I would like a better utility room. Ours houses the combi boiler, washing machine, tumble dryer, toilet, hand basin and shower cubicle.
I would rather have had space to create a proper shower room separate to the utility room. It isn't ideal, but it does the job.

I am a great believer in drying my washing outdoors whenever possible so a first floor laundry room would be rather inconvenient..

I used to have one and last year moved to a house without. I don't miss it at all. The room was used to store stuff that didn't really have a home. Most of that has been thrown away and we only have necessities under the kitchen sink. The utility sink was used for mucky jobs that we now use the outside tap for.
I think if you have a young or large family it would be useful to do laundry outside the kitchen, but when there are only two or less in the house it just somewhere else to clean!
I like the continental idea of having the washing machine in the bathroom. An American relative has an upstairs laundry room and simply undresses, strips beds etc and pops stuff in the machine. So convenient.

I’ve never had one and don’t hanker after one, I suppose what you’ve never had, you don’t miss. We do have a cloakroom though, that is essential for me, especially when the children were younger.

No..but the downstairs toilet is just big enough to house the washing machine & the worktop above has cuttings,seed trays etc. I would have liked a proper utility room but can easily live without!

new build, yes I have a small utility, washing machine, tumble dryer and with a sink unit over a cupboard, wall cupboards over the 2 machines and many sockets. Good for storing and using my appliances such as breadmaker, coffee grinder and for charging my vac cleaner. Sunny east facing with half glass door to outside. I like it very much. A good addition to my small kitchen/diner

We had a small extension built last year and now have a boot room. It has the tumble drier and a wall of cupboards. According to the council planning department a utility room has plumbing, (washers, sinks etc.) As we don't have those things, but we do have wellies and gardening gloves, we call it 'boot room'. It also has worktop with the recycling bags underneath and a couple of shelves holding cookery books etc.

Our cellar was a utility room. The huge old boiler was down there and so drying washing on the TidyDry washing line was a doddle in the winter. And having a large chest freezer, and the space to bag up fruit and vegetables from the garden, without creating a mess in the kitchen, was such a boon with a growing family. But I've no need for that much space now and so don't miss it.

Our old house had a ‘utility cubby’- washing machine with tumble dryer over it in the downstairs loo., as the kitchen diner was too small for a washing machine. Space was very limited! Now we have a proper utility room in what was an old barn attached to the house. It also functions as a boot room and is a buffer between the garden and the main house. Once the birds start nesting in the eves of our ( very old) house, it’s a good place to watch the parent birds coming and going.

Yes, we’ve a big cellar that we had tanked, plastered and added to the central heating years ago. Our washer, dryer, second freezer, ironing stuff, all shoes and coats are down there, as well as sundry exercise equipment, toys and loads of general stuff that we should probably sort and get rid of. It’s got an old stone sink, plenty of shelving and carpet tiles. We’ve a coal cellar next to it that I wish we’d had “done” at the same time. That one’s handy for general and cold storage, and the wine rack , but the floor’s uneven and all the pipes and wiring exposed. Maybe we’ll get round to it one day.

Not a utility room as such but a conservatory built on to the kitchen that we use as a table-tennis (half-size table) and ironing room. It is also where I set up my sewing machine when I have a project to do.
Not overlooking horses in fields GSM, but it is nice to see what's going on in the garden while ironing!
