Utility rooms do you have one/would you like one?

Jules and Jamie Oliver have just revamped their rather untidy utility room, Sarah Beeney has gone for state of the art which looks rather clinical to me and is bigger than many people's kitchens. Sarah also said no one else sees your utility room, so why go to that expense? Visitors do see my utility room as they have to go through it to get to the downstairs toilet. Having said that I would still no want to be without it as I appreciate being able to do the washing away from the kitchen and to store a number of things in the cupboards in there. How about you do you have or would you like a utility room?

No I dont. Yes I want one. Have always wanted one and have never lived in a house that had one smile

Yes, I have a small utility room -I have my washing machine there . Utility rooms are handy, but not necessary if you have a big kitchen. My kitchen is not small, but definitely not large.

Yes, I have a utility room on a lower floor and I often forget I’ve put washing on.

We don't have one, and I regret it.

When we bought this house we remodelled downstairs, and knocked through what had been a breakfast room, kitchen and scullery into one large room. The children were young, and I liked the idea of being able to do the washing and keep an eye on them at the same time, so had the kitchen plumbed for utilities instead of using the boot room at the back that could have been used as a utility. All the floors are concrete, so changing the layout or services would be an expense and a logistical nightmare, so we will have to live with it as it is, but I would much rather not have the washing in the kitchen if I had a choice.

Yes I have one just big enough for my washing machine and tumble dryer. I have two sets of shelves in there for various things and the dog basket in there as well. Wouldn’t be without it..?

MissAdventure Wed 23-Mar-22 16:37:31

I'd love one.
It would be a major consideration of I ever I could have had the option.

My kitchen is very small

We have a utility room. It used to have a sink but that was taken out when we had the utility and kitchen refurbished a few years ago. The utility room has the washing machine, tumble dryer, boiler room/cupboard and lots of cupboards. The small number three freezer is in there. On the worktop over the washing machine and tumble dryer, is a large cat bed for our two cats. I dry non-tumble dryer washing out there too.

My utility room is small but large enough for the washing machine, tumble drier, coats and boots. There is also a large floor to ceiling cupboard which is invaluable for storing things like light bulbs, cleaning stuff, dog food and baking equipment that only gets used once in a while. You have to walk through it to get to the bathroom but with a glass door leading to a small garden room and then out to the garden, it's more like a corridor so I have to keep it tidy!

I love it.

I do have a utility room, it's not small but I would like it to be bigger. It houses the washing machine, tumble dryer, full size freezer and full size fridge freezer. It also has 4 base units and 4 wall units. It also stores mop and bucket and loads of spare supplies such as bleach, dishwasher tablets, washing liquid etc etc. I never seem to have enough room so the Garage is used as back up.

We have a small utility room which has a sink with cupboards under for cleaning stuff, a floor to ceiling larder unit for tins and dry goods, and the washing machines. When we had the kitchen remodelled we took two of the old wall cabinets and put them on the wall in the utility room as they match the units that were already in there. I wish it was a tidy utility room. It is not and defeats all my attempts to tame it!

Greyduster Wed 23-Mar-22 17:28:32

That should be washing machine! I only have one!

GrannyGravy13 Wed 23-Mar-22 17:28:42

I had my utility room gutted and revamped at the same time as my kitchen.

I have washing machine, tumble drier, sink, two floor to ceiling larder cupboards, two under worktop cupboards.

I keep the microwave in it (seldom used) and have enough space for two rails high up for drying. Along with second coat rack.

It is off of the hall and if it happens to be messy I close the door.

Yes I’ve got one, and other than the usual washing machine, freezer etc. and my gardening gear, the most important function is to house my dog’s crate. He loves it so much I’ve never managed to wean him off it - it’s his cave at night, it’s got a cover on and his bed in. It takes up quite a lot of room but he’s worth it.

I have one and it's brilliant. We've moved a lot and this is the first house with a utility room that we have had. It's a fair size. It has the washing machine, a big fridge, the boiler and a small sink in there, plus a small counter and shelves for storage. I even do the ironing in there. I have to keep it tidy as you have to walk through it to get to the downstairs loo. Wouldn't be without it although I might have to be if we downsize. sad

JaneJudge Wed 23-Mar-22 17:39:02

you have to walk through our to get to the toilet as well so it has to be kept relatively tidy but isn't

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 23-Mar-22 17:44:42

I have one. The freezer and airing cupboard are in there, also a second fridge, a sink and all the cleaning stuff. I have a separate laundry room upstairs with washing machine, tumble dryer and hanging rail.

sodapop Wed 23-Mar-22 17:45:57

Just had this discussion with Iam64 I want a utility room like hers. Somewhere to keep all the dog stuff, boots etc. Downstairs lavatory and shower. A place to do laundry etc.
My dream house would definitely include this feature.

tanith Wed 23-Mar-22 17:46:26

No I don't have one, everything I need is in my kitchen. There’s only me and honestly don’t know what I’d keep in there, another room to keep tidy/clean. Maybe when I had family living with me years ago would of been handy but now I can live without it.

sodapop Wed 23-Mar-22 17:48:09

That's plain greedy GSM when I haven't got one at all just a walk in cupboard which I refer to as the utility room. smile

Millie22 Wed 23-Mar-22 17:51:23

Galaxy
I'm the same as you.

Marydoll Wed 23-Mar-22 17:52:17

When we extended our downstairs loo to turn it in into an accessible shower room, we then decided to add a utility room. One of the best decisions we ever made.
I have a long granite worktop for baking and all my gadgets are on the worktop. I could't bend to get then from cupboards.
We even managed to squeeze a small two seater table in.
I absolutely love it, especially the additional sink!

Yammy Wed 23-Mar-22 17:56:45

I'm getting one on Monday. It's the boiler room with a loo at the end. We had a new boiler and all the pipes need hidden.
My washing machine and tumbler and a small freezer are in there. I would love a Belfast sink but the room is not wide enough. I was thinking of having a washing pulley put in but realised I would need the light moved and the cupboards would not open.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 23-Mar-22 17:59:29

Sorry sodapop, it was all here when we moved. To make matters worse I will don my tin hat and tell you I keep the iron and ironing board in the laundry room and do my ironing on the landing watching the horses in the fields behind us. Not often though, I hate ironing.
