Bit of a shock this morning!

Yesterday I ordered some extra items, which were on offer, from the milkman.

Yoghurts in glass, and 2 packs of ‘Spoilt* Pig’ bacon. Milkman comes some time in the small hours, and weekend items (always more than usual) are left in a crate.

Something has torn open the packs of bacon and scoffed most of it! A few pieces were left on the path - they’ve now gone on the bird table.

But it was all vacuum packed, it’s not as if they could smell it - or could they?
Fox? Squirrel? Rat? Big birds, e.g. crows or magpies??
We are bemused!
But at least dh’s fruity yoghurts and everything else was untouched. We’ve never had an issue with doorstep deliveries before,
*Certainly spoilt bacon now!

Gosh, rotten luck but very interesting. When I get downstairs, I'm going to sniff test my bacon pack!

Passing cats or hedgehogs? We once (many years ago) blamed cats for tearing our bin bags apart, only to catch a hedgehog in the act!

Grandmabatty Sat 26-Mar-22 08:51:28

I would think foxes or cats the likely culprits! Leave a chill bag on your step for the next time and that should do it.

Wizend Could most likely be a squirrel or fox more than likely the former as a fox would have carried away the packets to take back to his/her family.
Good job you didn't order eggs as they would have enjoyed a nice breakfast at your expense.

Any spoor nearby?

harrigran Sat 26-Mar-22 08:54:11

That was the reason I stopped having milk delivered, the birds used to peck holes in the tops and help themselves to the cream.

Witzend Sat 26-Mar-22 08:59:53

I hadn’t thought of cats, but that’s certainly a possibility. There’s a new one 2 doors away!
For years we’ve had eggs delivered once a week, not in any extra packaging, and they’ve never been touched.

We’ve never had birds attacking the milk, but that’s maybe because we only have skimmed and semi-skimmed, homogenised, so no cream on top. Dh would like it - especially gold top! - but the mere look of it makes me heave.

A passing, very hungry, drunk?

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 26-Mar-22 09:05:24

Dogs can certainly smell what’s inside vacuum packaging so probably a fox or cat could too. That’s bad luck, no full English today!

Witzend Sat 26-Mar-22 09:10:18

I’m beginning to think it must have been the new neighbours’ cat. I’ve had to shoo it out of the garden (because of the birds) - it does look a bit like a thug with criminal tendencies.

It's magpies who empty bin bags in seconds round here!

Oldnproud Sat 26-Mar-22 10:06:31

Whatever it was, it will be very thirsty today!

grannysyb Sat 26-Mar-22 11:12:38

Put out a container with lid for the milkman to put your food in.

Visgir1 Sat 26-Mar-22 11:26:59

A mystery....?
I have a Ring door bell with camera. I have been surprised as my Milkman delivers just after midnight evidence on the camera.

Nocturnal wild life feeds at night.Doubt they are fussy what it is.

giulia Sat 26-Mar-22 11:52:59

You don't have wild boar your way do you? Here, in Central Italy they are the worst pests, even knock over and break up the glass/metal rubbish bins.

We have to hang up everything. Even then, one will stand on another boars' back to pull down the rubbish sacks.

I would suspect a fox. I often see one trotting along the road here (UK) in the early hours
Last week I put some bread and other kitchen bits in a compost bag in the food waste bin and locked the lid by pushing the handle forward. Something managed to get it open and ate the slightly mouldy bread but left the fruit and veg peelings. I know mould in bins can kill a dog, so hope Mr. Fox was all right.

lemsip Sat 26-Mar-22 12:17:43

Cats will do this too

Delila Sat 26-Mar-22 12:19:02

Sounds like a badger.....

Nightsky2 Sat 26-Mar-22 12:35:21

Big hungry animal I would say. Fox, Badger or neighbours cat.
My dog would smell bacon a mike away.

Nightsky2 Sat 26-Mar-22 12:35:45

A Mike away even……

Nightsky2 Sat 26-Mar-22 12:36:04

Stupid iPad.

SueDonim Sat 26-Mar-22 13:43:41

We get milk delivered. The dairy suggested we put out an insulated box to stop foxes getting into the bottles.

Does it have a shaved head, an earring and a tattoo on its bicep?
