Will Smith hit Chris Rock at the Oscars for making a rubbish joke about Jada’s hair loss.

Was he right to do so?

It has been worse.

Items ranged from high-end snacks and olive oil to a plot of land in Scotland making them Lords and Ladies of Glencoe. Several five-figure gifts were in the package including a $25,000 project from a construction company; a $15,600 four-night stay for two at a luxury resort; a $15,000 three-day holistic wellness retreat; a $12,000 arm sculpting procedure; and a $10,000 skin treatment such a Botox.

Obscene. How do these people sleep at night?

As an aside, I've just read that all nominees received a goody bag worth $140,000 including a piece of land in Scotland each. It seems pretty obscene to me.

I had to laugh just now. I said to Himself “well this has kept the Oscars front line news today” and he said “doesn’t mean I’ll watch it next year though”.
?

... I think that's quite witty of "himself"! grin

The whole thing was a display of toxic masculinity. Jada Pinkett Smith is perfectly capable of speaking up for herself - the idea that a man needs to resort to violence to ‘protect his woman’ is ridiculous.

Rock was rude, and jokes about personal appearance aren’t funny. Snide comments passed off as ‘banter’ are not funny. Laughing at someone’s misfortune isn’t funny. When I was a child life was crueller than now, but even then we were taught not to ‘mock the afflicted’.

All the same, violence was an over-reaction. Smith could have stood up and said something about hurtful comments, or bullying, or made reference to alopecia in his acceptance speech. He didn’t have to resort to the ‘an insult to my woman is an insult to me’ mentality that says nothing about love, but everything about his attitude to his wife and to dealing with problems. Or Pinkett Smith could have spoken for herself.

I think there should be a zero tolerance approach to violence. Smith should have been quietly asked to leave (off camera) and banned from attending further ceremonies, and Rock asked to apologise.

FannyC I think you missed my point.

Apologies Urms, I was unnecessarily rude.

Well, Smith has apologised too (again).

I’ve just heard that there is talk of Smith and Rock presenting next year’s Oscars together. ?

I should think that most people are already sick to the back teeth of the pair of them.

I wouldn't mind betting that Chris Rock will watch his mouth when he's anywhere near Will Smith in the future.

Kittye Mon 28-Mar-22 22:55:43

NanKate I’m with you. Chris Rock was out of order. How could any real man sit there and listen to his wife be insulted!
Will Smith stood up for his woman. If anyone insulted one of my family, especially in front of millions, I’d react the same way.

BlueSky Mon 28-Mar-22 22:36:27

Like most I think Will Smith could have just said something or walked out rather than resorting to a slap. But the more I think about it, the more I believe it was all staged. Surprising that Chris Rock didn’t punch him back!

NanKate Mon 28-Mar-22 22:28:36

Has Chris Rock been told to apologise for making such an unkind comment, not a joke imo? He started it all.

Richard Madeley said that he had interviewed CR once and he was the most obnoxious man he had come across.

JaneJudge Mon 28-Mar-22 22:20:52

too

JaneJudge Mon 28-Mar-22 22:20:43

British media have now decided Will Smith is now bad confused and has to make further apologies to Chris Rock who sounds like a cock

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Mar-22 20:33:52

Fair point Callistemon21.
You are 100% spot on.

Thanks timetogo2016
If I could have reached him I might have done the same but I used a word which is not normally part of my vocabulary!

Sorry, a bit mixed up there, but I am re-living the experience of many years of verbal bullying.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Mar-22 19:23:09

It wasn't violence as such although a slap is not acceptable either.

Violence would have been a punch on the jaw perhaps ending in a proper fisticuffs.

I really think there comes a point when a slap like that may be the only way to get through just how offensive to some people just how truly offensive and bullying they can be.

After years of such remarks from someone we know about DH, me, our children I wouldn't have been sorry if DH had slapped him but he didn't (not his way).

Blossoming Mon 28-Mar-22 18:48:11

Violence is never the answer.

You can't take his Oscar away because it was awarded before the incident, but the pair should be banned for life from attending any future ceremonies.

Let's all hope and pray that there are no more of these self-indulgent luvvie-fests.

He was crying because he knew that he’d made a complete fool of himself

GillT57 Mon 28-Mar-22 16:43:00

Chris Rock is not funny, last night was one of his worst. Will Smith would have been better putting him down with a humiliating few words, he is smart enough. The episode eclipsed the other awards.

One good thing that came from covid lockdown was that all these self indulgent, mutual lovie fests were shut down, I think thy have had their day, the extravagance is vulgar and crass.
