The ‘hipster’ beard is over…

…according to today’s Times, anyway.
Three cheers from me - I really hate those scruffy little so-called beards that just look as if the bloke hasn’t shaved for a week.

I hope I’m not alone!

I don’t care for beards, having seen a few of dh and ds friends with and without beards, I’m of the opinion they are grown by many men to hide weak chins.

I'm not happy with beards of any sort.

I’ve read (scanned) The Times article; and it’s about beards in general.

I can’t see any mention of ‘wispy’ beards, goatees or designer stubble.

It’s illustrated with photos of bushy type beards, including these before and afters of Aiden Turner, which I’m sure will be appreciated here

Did you know the word ‘hipster’ was coined in New York in the 1920s? The term originally referred to rebels who diverted from social norms by carrying hipflasks in the Prohibition era. Since then, contemporary hipster subculture has come a long way. Modern hipster style is readily associated with creativity and independent thinking. Today’s hipsters are bastions of cool, and make sure they stay ahead of the curve when it comes to music, art and food trends. Vintage fashion is a trademark too, with oversize frame glasses and a statement hipster beard combining to create the overall look. Beard fashion is key here too, with many modern beard styles taking inspiration from the hipster trend

MIL hated beards/moustaches with a passion and would not allow one in 'her' house. We married on a Saturday, flew off to Italy on honeymoon, where DH managed to get his face badly sun burned on the first day. He did not shave at all and by the time we returned had a decent neat little beard. Off he went to work (family business) on the Monday and as usual ran his father home at 5.30.

MIL went berserk, ordered her son to remove the beard immediately or never come near her home again. She phoned me to insist that I MAKE him shave it off. I told her I loved it blush. The beard remained for the rest of DH's life with MIL constantly apologising to all and sundry for her Son's appearance and blaming me for this embarrassment. Strangely? both DDs chose bearded men and 15yo DGS has said he will grow a beard in the summer holidays (not permitted at school)

I don’t like beards at all. None of them Don’t get me started on the men who have bald heads and big fuzzy beards.

Even worse, IMO, largely bald and what’s left very grey, with beard and a ponytail! Often in shorts plus a Hawaiian type shirt, and riding a skateboard.

Saw lots of these when visiting Berkeley (California) for a niece’s graduation. We could only assume that Berkeley was where all the ancient old hippies go to die.

Damn. Just as I was managing to grow quite the beard. grin

Coastpath I shouldn't have read that when I was having a sip of tea!
Now I can't stop coughing ???

I like little beards and think they look attractive. What I can't stand are those huge bushy ones.

kittylester Mon 28-Mar-22 10:15:41

Google on hipster beards

GrandmasueUK Mon 28-Mar-22 10:02:55

My OH has a lovely beard, nicely trimmed though. One of our friends used to say that kissing a man without a beard was like eating a boiled egg without salt ?
I don’t like the bushy Jim Royle or Joe Wilkinson type beards. They look as though they could be harbouring all sorts in them!

Zonne Mon 28-Mar-22 09:58:13

Whatever the beginning of that Times article says, a hipster beard is not designer stubble, but a full beard, with varying styles.

I do like the goaty type of beard. Makes men look very intellectual. My DH has one of course!

shysal Mon 28-Mar-22 09:52:11

I find a scruffy beard most unattractive, but my opinion counts for nothing! smile

TerriBull Mon 28-Mar-22 09:49:25

My sons both have beards fairly clipped, one son is very dark and Latin looking even more so with a beard. When they occasionally shave them off, it seems if something is missing, it takes me a while to work out what exactly grin It's surprising how many men favour a beard these days. I do like a goatee, not so wild about the incredibly bushy hipster beards just too much hair!

I thought a hipster beard was the bushy type. I quite like them.

No, it’s the ‘hasn’t shaved for a week’ one.

I rather like proper beards. My Dbro has one, and my father did for quite a while during WW2. He was in the RN, where the rules apparently were, shave completely or not at all.
So no David Niven type moustaches.

He did look older in bearded WW2 photos though.
Much later, when he was involved in amateur dramatics, he once grew a bushy moustache for the part he was playing.
We weren’t mad keen, and he did look so much younger after he finally shaved it off.

I don't mind nicely trimmed beards but those horrible bushy ones are awful.

My favourite beard of the moment belongs to T on Salvage Hunters. He looks almost biblical with his curls and beard.

PinkCosmos Mon 28-Mar-22 09:41:08

My DS has a big bushy hipster beard. It is quite long and now has grey hairs running through it. I am not keen on it. His GF seems to like it though.

I think he would suit a shorter more trimmed beard but it is up to him at the end of the day smile

Redhead56 Mon 28-Mar-22 09:39:59

I secretly agree I’m a fan of the lumberjack looks.

JaneJudge Mon 28-Mar-22 09:39:29

I quite like facial hair too grin

paddyann54 Mon 28-Mar-22 09:37:22

My very handsome husband has had a beard since he was 17 ,in fact I've never seen him without it .I love his beard .He is always well dressed and his beard doesn't make him scruffy oh and he has a full head of thick curly hair too.

Grandmabatty Mon 28-Mar-22 09:31:08

I do like a man with a beard. Particularly if he's wearing a check shirt and wielding a power saw, building a log cabin in the wilds of Alaska. ☺️ My favourite tv watching.
