Why do drivers sound the horn to vent their anger against other drivers

We have a neighbour who regularly gets picked up by her son, before 8am. He toots the horn, why not use his mobile and stop disturbing people, unnecessarily. Or even just sit there and wait for her, why the noise?

My late wife did not move off when the lights changed to green. A policeman from the car behind us came, knocked on the drivers window, and said to my wife "Can you not find a colour that you like, madam?"

Last time I used my horn I was taking my neighbour shopping, I was keeping to the speed limit At a roundabout a Mercedes driver who obviously thought I wasn't going fast enough for him decided to overtake me & pull in so sharply I still don't know how he didn't take my front wing with him, yes I did lean on the horn as it shook both of us up, such a dangerous manouver. He was last seen disappearing towards Newton Abbot at well over the 30mph speed limit

ha ha GrandMattie that was my immediate thought. In India it seemed to mean I'm coming and you need to get out of the way as I'm driving down the wrong side of the motorway!

Possibly because by doing so the incident will stay in the mind of the ‘ alleged guilty party’. Thus hopefully avoiding repeating
the ‘mistake ‘

I don't use my car horn except when I lean on it by accident getting out of the car - it's in the middle of the steering wheel. The windscreen wipers are on the stick where the horn used to be in my old car so I do a good line in washing the windscreen to show my irritation!
Pet hate is people hooting at learner drivers - we were all there once.

If you keep hearing a horn maybe you should check your driving?

Sometimes I have been warned by a horn and have warned others.
And as for dreamy drivers not moving when s filter at the lights say they can.. yes. Just beeps not blasts.
I hate the sound of horns blasted in anger it raises the blood pressure for everyone and is dangerous, I always doubly, triply check it isn’t me, causing the offence, no way, then hate them. It’s a scary aggressive tactic.
And while we are at it people who don’t acknowledge your generosity, letting them in etc really **sses me off. (And most often round here it is young women who think they are thus entitled. )

In Jamaica they are a form of communication. They beep if wanting to overtake and the driver being overtaken beeps in acknowledgement, then the overtaking driver will beep their thanks is one example.

My DDiL had an impatient man sound his horn then pull by her still tooting & stop in front of her. He got out of his car to have a go at what he must have assumed was a stupid blond woman driver! My DDiL got out of her car, stood up to her nearly 6 foot height & politely asked the short man what was wrong! He muttered to himself, got back in his car & vanished! My young GS thought it was hilarious because the little man was scared of his Mummy! We all agreed! He must have felt really stupid!

Hardly ever use the horn but occasionally I beep someone if I feel that they obviously haven't realised that they have made a driving error. The last time was when a man drove onto mini roundabout in front of me without even looking, causing me to brake hard. I am sure he had no idea that he might have caused an accident. Sadly he probably still thinks that the beep was not meant for him.

Oh dear I should be driving in Spain.

Can we all honestly say we never make a mistake whilst out and about driving?
Please refrain from sounding your horn,the horn is their for emergency's not to vent your anger at another driver.
It causes noise pollution and every one around the area looks round thinking was that aimed at me?
Only fools sound their horn because its April fools day.

I have occasionally used my horn in anger, but always feel awful afterwards. You're quite right, it's a distraction for other drivers and should only be used as a warning if someone's about to pull out in front of you or some such. Good thread.

I always remember my driving instructor telling me it was a poor driver who used the horn.

I frequently find some clown behind me toots his horn when the only way I can move is for my car to sprout wings and fly. I realise I have grey hair so obviously elderly so that puts me at a disadvantage it would appear.

Many years ago someone hooted at me towards the end of a very long motorway drive when I had both little dds in the back.

It very likely saved our lives. I had very briefly nodded off and was wandering into another lane.?

Where I live there is a lady that visits her mother daily, when leaving she toots the horn and waves at her mother standing at the door, it really irritates me.

It's irritating, and it's contrary to the Highway Code.

I suppose it's better than decking someone but on the other hand inordinate hornage could lead to fisticuffs.....

Someone I know was teaching her young daughter to drive. Her daughter stalled the car at some lights and the car behind immediately started hooting. My friend got out of the car and said to the driver behind 'I'm very surprised at a man of your years having so little patience. It's not a good lesson to teach a learner driver.' She said he went very red and quiet and she got back in the car.

A neighbour used to get picked up every saturday by her Dd at 9am,and without fail she pipped her horn,i don`t understand why she just couldn`t knock the door,it`s only 6 feet away from her.

Taxi drivers do the same.

I expect people have been doing this since cars and horns were invented. It can be annoying.

It is galling to know you have made a mistake and even more so when somebody hoots to let you know about it, but as for Only fools sound their horns because it is April Fools’ Day - I have no idea what you are talking about.

Interesting reading the above in relation to other countries as when we went to Vietnam I was so struck by the politeness of the quick toots that were regularly heard of horns there.

Only use your horn to warn others of your presence.

Never use your horn aggressively

Never use your horn when stationary

Never in a built up area between 11pm? and 6am? Unless someone is in clear danger.

Glad you have quoted that WWM2 as that is what I understood from the Highway Code.
Agree with you Infoman. I have peeped if someone is not moving off at lights and not even looking at the lights however hopefully that might stop with the new rule about mobiles.
