How will you make savings to pay for energy bills.

I thought about this and discussed with my sister. I will try to use the oven only when I can fill it rather than cooking one item. My smalls will be hand-wash and then spun in machine cutting out a wash cycle. Only when I have a full load will I use WM. All doors inside house will be kept closed to retain heat from any sunshine they may get. Hot water bottle and blankets when sitting to watch TV. Layers of clothing and 2 pairs of socks as well. I'm scared of running up a large bill unknowingly. How about you???

I've just remembered the library was one of the highlights of my Mum's week when I was a child - we'd go shopping, then go in.

Was someone earlier talking about saving Green Shield stamps?

On Mumsnet, a person was saving their 'Co-op' points for a rainy day. She gave the card to her friend who was staying as she was going to the Co-op to get them some lunch, and wanted the points - friend spent them! £30 worth!

I normally love her books Urmstongran but I'm unsure about this one, the style seems different. I'll read the papers in the library too, I am still stuck on the bed with my laptop and have got behind with the news.

The library is a good way to find local groups and events, too.
Ours also has a charity which go there once a fortnight, and they can help with the kinds of issues that the citizens advice used to do, before it was closed down here.

I’ve just bought ‘French Braid’ on my Kindle too Shandy. I love Anne Tyler novels. We have a great, modern purpose built library here in Urmston (with a lift & escalator for easy access) and I do use it. The problem is that for any new books out there’s a long waiting list & each person has a few weeks so it might be months before you get a turn ... and I’m impatient!

I think the newspapers table will be busy the next few days. People go in to sit in the warm on cold days and read the stack of daily papers there. Not a bad idea really.

I've just been on Mumsnet and realised I haven't been to the library for over ten years. They started opening on odd days, and I never looked and ended up going when they were closed and got fed up. I have a kindle, but often buy books I really want - I've just paid £10 for the new Anne Tyler, French Braid.

Does anyone on here go to the library? I'm going to join again.

I agree Blossoming. There seems to be a conflation between this thread and the “where are the dads?” thread.

I thought this thread was going to be more about tips and suggestions for economy regards cost of living rises.

Blossoming Sun 03-Apr-22 12:05:49

Having now caught up on this thread I see the ‘undeserving poor’ have put in an appearance. There is a cost of living crisis, it’s happening now to real people. I had hoped this thread would be about ways we as individuals could live more frugally and ways we as a community could help others.

This is like the mean girls in the playground all sniping at one another. So childish really.

Apologies. The quote in my post Sun 03-Apr-22 11:14:25 should have been attributed to Chestnut Sun 03-Apr-22 00:22:09 and not Vintagejazz.

So, the expensive manicures which are used as an indicator of fecklessness may not be so? Just a £1 treat in Primark. Or are the same people who can spot an expensive manicure the same ones who can spot 'the latest i-phone'? Unless a phone is a pre 2000 Nokia I can't tell the difference!

I’ve been looking at the fuel costs of microwaving v conventional oven and ready meals v cooking from scratch. I like cooking from scratch and rarely use the microwave for actually ‘cooking’. But if you’re discerning in the ready meal looking carefully at the content, it can be significantly cheaper and equally nutritious to buy them, rather than the multiple ingredients to cook conventionally.
This doesn’t include of course those who batch cook.

Actually, Skydancer's comment was crass and insensitive and deserves to be challenged, although Franbern was a lot more polite in her response than I would have been.

errmm...

That someone called me rude for expressing an opinion.

Hence its an example of how people think they can call others "rude" just because they don't agree with them.

It just seems a bit...over-used.

No no, I don't report. Just saying smile.

Yesterday I was called rude for disagreeing with a report on TV and the woman who made it.

Funny old world.

What has that got to do with this thread?

I never use the words `I will,. ` I do is my mantra, always do full loads, always fill the oven, always switch of unused lights, always turn standby off. I could go on but surely it is not necessary. Meal planning, cooking batch meals and so on. This is a way of life for many of us. The way we were brought up, to enable a comfortable life now

volver Sun 03-Apr-22 11:17:42

Actually, not TV, it was the Guardian. Sorry.
