The sock on the stair!! Is there anything more annoying!!

This morning I brought a huge armful of washing downstairs. It was a dark wash. Put it in the machine and set it going . (40°. Some of it needed it!). A bit later I went back upstairs, and there it was! Nestling gently, snoozing in the sun. Just like Christopher Robin, it was sitting half way up the stairs! One single, solitary, lonely sock. The one with a triceratops on the ankle. Oh the fury and frustration! It must be the most annoying occurrence ever! Knickers on the stairs are bad but despite them being called a pair, a pair of knickers is only one item. It does not have a twin, a soul mate, in a completely separate location. So what to do with the sock on the stair and its soon to be clean partner. Put it back in the linen basket and wait for the next dark wash? Run the risk of putting it in with tomorrow's white wash? And what about its other half? Do I leave it hanging , waiting for it's mirror image to return? Do I put it away and then next wash day wonder why I have one odd sock? Or do I return it to the linen basket despite it's being clean, so at least they are reunited? Oh! The anguish!!

Lizbethann your post made me think of Phoenix who always used to come up with a quirky title for her posts. Yous sock dilemma is easily the sort of thing that she would have written about too. Nice to be reminded ?
I have a lone sock in my drawer that is waiting for it’s sole mate. It’s not turned up for a few weeks now…I might have to delve in the dark regions behind the chest of drawers. ? ?

As I got to the bottom of the stairs this morning with my dark wash I looked back up to see if there was anything left on the stair. It happens all the time. Grrrr

It's just attention seeking- ignore it for a while to teach it a lesson.

In my house it would be in the dog’s mouth and he would be making a rush for the garden

Yes, these stairs have a lot to answer for. Yet again, I am not alone. Hearty great cheers!

The teaspoon left in the sink when the washing up was thought to be done? It’s always there ...

GrannyLaine Tue 05-Apr-22 21:25:06

You ask if there's anything more annoying? Yes! Same scenario, but adult daughter (not renowned for her laundry capability) points out to me that the washing machine I've had for years has a pause facility which unlocks the machine door to pop in the truanting sock and then off it goes again. How did I not know this??????

I was going down the stairs for my second mug of tea and fell on the last four stairs. My husband's hat was the guilty party I am still sore four weeks later. However I cannot make a fuss of it because he has many a time nearly broke his neck. I have the wash basket on the landing and have a habit of chucking it down the stairs!

I regularly use the pause button on my washing machine to add a rogue sock, but we still end up with odd socks! For an extra £200 or so you can get a washing machine with an extra door. I’d rather wash it by hand than do that.

Thankfully I live in a bungalow, I retrace my steps to the laundry basket to pick up stragglers.

Even worse if it’s a pair of pants and the dog delivers them to the electrician who has just arrived!

I often use the pause button on my washer. I’m always finding something I’ve forgotten. Tizliz I have a “sock monster” too ?

Dont talk to me about partnerless socks! For years we had a big bag, more like a sack, where I put clean odd socks. Life was busy, seven of us wore clean socks every day, the boys were
messy and we had a dog! We ended up with more odd single socks than I could ever admit to!!

HettyBetty Tue 05-Apr-22 23:06:44

This happened to me yesterday except the rogue sock was on the bedroom floor. It hadn't even got to the stairs. I wanted to wear that particular pair today so hand washed it.

DillytheGardener Tue 05-Apr-22 23:24:53

I also have a bag of single socks. I must investigate as I haven’t checked it since my sons left home pandemic so I’m sure many can be binned.

It’s amazing how annoying the dropped sock is. To avoid total nervous collapse I keep socks paired together until I am loading the machine. Then if some get dropped at least it’s a pair. Though, maddeningly, very occasionally, I find one on the floor in front of the washing machine ?

FarNorth Tue 05-Apr-22 23:45:42

Here's the very thing!
Snap the socks together before putting in the laundry basket and that's it sorted!

I solved the problem of my teenage boys odd socks by only buying plain black sports socks which were identical. I kept then in a basket in the airing cupboard on the landing. All I did was dump clean dry ones in it, not paired up, and the boys grabbed two random socks each morning.

I was recently infuriatingly deficient to the tune of one (new) sock. I hunted high & low, retraced steps and, as I chuck my dirty laundry over the bannister, searched all around the chair upon which it usually lands. 3 days later while folding a recently washed T-shirt, a lump in the armpit revealed itself to be the missing sock ?

absent Wed 06-Apr-22 05:59:57

Isn't the rule that a single missing sock will finally reappear as a plastic lid that doesn't fit any of the plastic containers?

Serendipity22 Wed 06-Apr-22 06:59:01

This thread made me laugh, the flow of explanation is brilliant.

Right, have i experienced the lone sock?

Yes.

Did it annoy?

!@#$$$#@!!#@! ( haaa THAT is a yes )

Teaspoon in the sink!

Grrrrrrrrrrr.

kittylester Wed 06-Apr-22 07:03:42

I thought odd socks were fashionable nowadays. Well, that's my excuse.

Nana3 Wed 06-Apr-22 07:15:13

kitty yes they are with the teenagers in my family ☺

Nyman1962 Wed 06-Apr-22 07:29:33

I use a small zipped laundry bag for socks and undies. They keep everything and so much easier for sorting when drying.
