A council in Cornwall has decided no more daffodils should be planted as they are poisonous and children might eat them! Another example of a bonkers world?

henetha Wed 06-Apr-22 10:34:59

Seriously? What absolutely bonkers tosh!

volver Wed 06-Apr-22 10:38:00

Really?

If the Daily Mail told you the Queen was a lizard, would you believe them?

Actually, don't answer that...

JaneJudge Wed 06-Apr-22 10:40:44

It is just in a fenced off play area, from what I have read. I imagine the council are liable if a child ate poisonous flowers that had been planted in a designated area for them. People claim compensation for all kinds of things they should have personal responsibility for

I've just seen this on TV on a news item.

Are they going to dig up all the bulbs?
How many children have been poisoned by ingesting daffodils?

PECS Wed 06-Apr-22 10:44:27

The item I read said this particular council will not be planting any more in the children's play park.

A bit different to Cornwall council bans planting daffodils. Maybe they had a complaint, or another council did and they are pre-empting costs of complaints/ hearings/ tribunals..or maybe they just don't like daffodils.

volver Wed 06-Apr-22 10:45:48

Well why don't you read it to find out?

JaneJudge Wed 06-Apr-22 10:46:38

I don't think you can be too careful with these holiday homers from London whose children are used to eating edible flowers on their salads

Callistemon21 Wed 06-Apr-22 10:46:40

..^or maybe they just don't like daffodils^
I've never met anyone who doesn't like daffodils - beside the lake, beneath the trees ..... along the sides of the motorway

That to Callistemon.

It gets my goat when people say things like "are they going to do this or that" when the answer is in the very article they post a link to...

Some wonderful comments in Metro

Are you sure that the report wasn't on April 1st?

Her we go, here we go, here we go
Your daily bash at me.
Will you just stop it?

It's rather sad, really, that you have to keep having a go at me every day ever since the SNP thread.

Let it go dearie.

I believe this report was just below the one about cutting school doors in half.

In the "exaggerate a story beyond all concept of reality, to upset middle England" section.

(I had actually typed this before Call got indignant, but its still worth posting)

Callistemon21 Wed 06-Apr-22 10:59:34

Oh dear, never criticise the saintly SNP!

???

Aveline? Come to my rescue!!

In the "exaggerate a story beyond all concept of reality, to upset middle England" section

Bit of a misunderstanding there, I think about the true story of door chopping.
There was only one person upset, the rest found the story very funny indeed.
It was a source of much hilarity.

After I read the Tory which I then posted I asked:

Are they going to dig up all the bulbs?

They say will not be planting new bulbs because daffodils are toxic.
Perhaps they don't realise the ones already there will come up again next year and might even spread, even if they cut down the dead ones.

Callistemon21 Wed 06-Apr-22 11:10:28

Story not Tory

(It didn't specify which political party is in charge)

25Avalon Wed 06-Apr-22 11:18:36

Volver it so happens I did not read it in the Daily Mail. I read it on Somerset Live, sister to Cornwall Live, as listed by Callistemon. Love the quotes in the Metro - thanks for posting Blossoming.

I remember trying to buy a bag of reduced price daffodil bulbs in the Co-op a few years back. When I got to the till they refused to sell them to me on the grounds I might eat them! Having convinced them I had no intention of so doing they gave them to me for free as they weren’t allowed to sell them.

Dottynan Wed 06-Apr-22 11:28:35

Sssshhh don't tell the council that the daffs will grow again next year.

ShazzaKanazza Wed 06-Apr-22 11:30:09

Just another example of our nanny state. Unbelievable!!

Esmay Wed 06-Apr-22 11:30:39

I can think of about a hundred plants ,which are poisonous to humans .
Ban them and we won't have much left in the garden and our florists will go out of business .
They taste nasty anyway .
Let's teach children about flowers if we can .
These are pretty to look at ,but we don't eat them .

I think that a great deal of confusion has been caused by the fashion for edible flowers -lovely as they are .
