Vanity thy name is woman (yes I know it’s a misquote)

I have a terminal cancer diagnosis and have just had second session of chemotherapy which I hope will buy me time. I shall sign up for any trials offered and plan to cling on as long as I can !
I have a wig ready. I had my hair cut very short last week and it looked fabulous though I say it myself (actually so did everyone else !)
But today my hair is almost gone.. Why am I so upset? What does it matter really ?
Actually I think I have to admit I’ve always been rather vain. I care what I look like, how I dress etc. (for myself not other peoples opinion) Do you ?

Sorry…I’ve rambled on.j

I admire you Lucca.

Your ramblings are most welcome and it isn’t vanity to want to look your best, how often have we felt awful inside, but we want the world to think we look fine?

I changed my hair colour 2 sessions ago and to me it looks awful, so it affects how I feel inside, it’s going to go back to my previous colour soon even though it’s a bit bright.
Everyone knows it’s a fake colour anyway so I think what the hell. Maybe that’s vanity!

Oh Lucca I'm so sorry. I realise I'm fortunate not to have cancer but I have lost all my hair due to alopecia as I have gone on about many times on here.
I under estimated the effect it would have on me. It's devastating. You are not at all vain. Be kind to yourself. flowers

I sometimes wear a silk bonnet in bed (not as stupid as it sounds)
It feels lovely.

My dad’s wife has lost almost all of her hair and now wears wigs.

If I were in that situation I’d wear a silk bonnet around the house etc.

I’ve recommended them to her (she probably hasn’t taken me up on it though!)

It also looks quite glamorous in a golden age of Hollywood way.

The only family member with red curly hair which I hated. I stood out from others it added to my personality with the usual stereotypes feisty etc. Its white now and I look like every other senior lady I miss the attention my hair used to get. Vanity helps shape your personality and makes you the person you are. I hope you have extra time and continue to contribute here as long as you can. ?

Sending hugs Lucca.
I know, to a lesser extent, how you feel about your hair, it’s not vanity, and so what if it is?
My hair started thinning when I went through an early menopause, I was devastated. A couple of years later I met a woman who had lost most of her hair through chemo, she shaved the rest off and wore headbands, the wide twisty ones from Oliver Bonas and boy did she look glamorous.
Good luck.

I’m saddened to hear you have a terminal illness Lucca and I very much admire your positivity. You always come across as one feisty lady. Keep on keeping on. I hope you’re with us for a long time yet. x

? Lucca I am so sorry to hear your news. You are one of the people whose level headed and informative posts I always enjoy reading. You are no rambler. Vanity shmanity. No-one is happy about losing their hair. ?

timetogo2016 Thu 07-Apr-22 09:52:16

I can`t add anymore than what`s already been said Lucca.
I hope you make a full recovery.

Thank you but I won’t ! Just hope for as much time as I can get

Hang on a mo… (I remember that you taught me how to do this…)

Oldwoman70 Thu 07-Apr-22 09:55:52

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It isn't vanity - it is having pride in your appearance and there is nothing wrong with that! Feel free to come here and rant and ramble as much as you like - sometimes it is easier to "talk" to strangers than it is to family and we are here for you.

That isn’t the one that I’ve got.
Mine is smaller. I’ve forgotten the name, I’ll keep thinking ?

I thought you meant an actual bonnet, FannyCornforth smile

Callistemon21 Thu 07-Apr-22 10:02:06

Lucca I've met people at the hospital who have lost all their hair through treatments and have not bothered with a wig at all but I couldn't be that brave or confident.

It did seem that some thought they might not lose all their hair as it got thinner but then it would suddenly be gone.
No, it's not vain at all but thank goodness the wigs are so much better and more natural now and there is more choice (not necessarily the NHS ones).

Ramble on as much as you like, Lucca

My daughter found some lovely ones on etsy.

The seller actually asked for your head measurement and made them to order, and they were reasonably priced, too.

FannyCornforth Thu 07-Apr-22 10:02:54

Polly that’s great! I can actually imagine myself poncing about at home in that! (While watching Lark Rise)

Lucca this one is from Marks and only £25

LauraNorderr Thu 07-Apr-22 10:02:56

Oh Lucca, what a shock. One of my favourite, lovely, slightly feisty, clever, witty and always interesting posters. I’m so sad for you.
Sod the hair, wear your bare head with the pride of a strong woman, wear lovely soft scarves that match your outfit and drape your shoulder like a pony tail, wear brightly coloured turbans that reflect your happiness in your sons and gc and a life well lived.
Wear that expensive wig and buy two more in different colours if you fancy, in fact do everything you fancy. You go girl, we’re all with you.

merlotgran Thu 07-Apr-22 10:03:35

Tell yourself, ‘Vanity with knobs on’ is all part of your positive mental attitude, Lucca and make it your mantra.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment.

25Avalon Thu 07-Apr-22 10:05:25

Lucca so sorry to hear your sad news. Taking a pride in your appearance is not vanity. Put your best lippy on and stay positive. You may still have many years. Plenty do and hopefully you will be one of them. xx

So sorry to hear your news Lucca. Wishing you all the best.
