Ordinary everyday things I no longer know how to do

I just realised today that even if I was minded to look for a job I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it.
When I was job hunting jobs were advertised in the paper and you sent in your CV or requested an application form, filled it in and posted it back. Then you waited for a letter saying you had or hadn't been called for an interview.

That all seems to have changed.

What other ordinary things would posters not know how to go about in this digital age.

I'm not even 60 yet shock

Callistemon, ?

Callistemon21 Wed 13-Apr-22 10:10:15

I am a bit older but I still can't skip Bellanonna ?
I haven't done a somersault for years either, but I can still touch my toes.

Bellanonna Tue 12-Apr-22 21:27:12

Ah, bless her Callistemon.

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Apr-22 17:23:53

first two!!

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Apr-22 17:23:41

I can do the first too but most plugs are sealed units now.

I can't skip any more but I was assured by a very little DGD that I'll be able to skip when I'm older
?

Not read all the posts … can you turn your water supply off; turn your electricity on if it trips; change a fuse - I might just be able to do it. wink

Now having two twelve year old granddaughters, one who lives with me, I have to say I’m quite an expert in this strange phenomenon.
I can see that for little girls and their friends, it’s quite fun, but you would be amazed at the amount of grown people, prepared to humiliate themselves for approx one minute of fame.
Enormous fat people dancing around in their underwear seems to be a favourite

Another one here who can't do a roly-poly now. Tried to show gd age 3 how to do it on carpet then thought better of it. Wasn't sure if my head would still have been attached to torso if I'd continued. Likewise the bars in the park. I was going to show gc how to tipple over then thought better not. When AC were young they were impressed I could sit on them go backwards over and loop off. What happened to that person?

Billybob4491 Tue 12-Apr-22 11:33:43

Tik Tok whats that all about?

I have to be reasonably familiar with all the techno stuff as I sell online. If there is something I cant manage I call my geeky nephew.

What I can no longer do is stand on a ladder without feeling anxious as my balance and mobility are not great. So sad because I used to be quite accompished at wallpapering.

I need to speak to my broadband supplier but keep putting it off as I don't really understand it all. I usually can't hear what they are saying because of their accent, be it foreign or from up north, sorry no offence meant but its true. My husband was the tech person in our house and as he is no longer here it's down to me. So frightened I'm gonna agree to something unknowingly!!!! ?

Use it or lose it - it applies to many things

"Use it or lose it." You can't lose it if you have never had it. This post was originally started about things that were getting physically and technically difficult as we get older and was light-hearted and then changed.
Someone I know has a number of degrees including an M.D. and hasn't yet managed to get the Sat Nav to work in their 18-month-old car. Before it is said they are no absent-minded professor.
Well if you have never had compassion for people less able than yourselves you certainly can't lose it, God help the world.
You obviously never been in a classroom full of children who daren't admit they can't do things and teachers have to second guess or estimate who needs help.
We will get there in our own time. We all use computers or we wouldn't be on Gran's net so there's a start.

I'm daunted by the thought of getting out my sewing machine and doing even a simple seam. Bought some new curtains 2 years ago , but one set needs shortening and I keep putting it off.

Sara1954 Tue 12-Apr-22 07:33:54

I once phoned the AA because my car flatly refused to start at my granddaughters nursery.
Problem? When I buckled her in I left my keys in the back, too far away to pick up the signal.
I felt spectacularly stupid!

Bucklen Tue 12-Apr-22 07:26:41

Too true

BlueBalou Tue 12-Apr-22 07:02:52

And my so-smart car flatly refused to unlock yesterday so I spent hours trying to sort it out ?

Thank you for keeping cash going. Most people do not realise how important cash is. The world is changing over to digital 'everything ' where we will all be controlled. Our finances will be vulnerable to tampering by those in power. Cash is legal tender and we simply have to continue its daily use. One could say "A penny in the hand is worth 2 in the bank"

Alexa sometimes lights up without being asked and will occasionally say something.
It's very spooky if you're just leaving the room at bedtime, turned off all the lights and she suddenly lights up and speaks to a quiet, darkened room.

MyAlexa is in a cupboard somewhere ? The random voice from nowhere and weird bleeps and flashing lights got on my nerves. I clearly hadn’t got the knack of using her!

I can’t whistle ?

I love all my tech so no problems there! But self checkouts in shops ... I just don't even want to attempt to learn. If self checkout is the only option I just put everything back and walk out. 'Unexpected item in bagging area' happened once too often in the early days and and it's my small protest to hopefully keep some jobs for actual humans in shops.

Taking my GCs to Pizza Hut and ordering from a friendly member of staff. I now have to scan a QR code, work my way through the complicated options, eventually reach the end and try to pay, only to find tht my email address is not valid. Call a waitress who had been standing doing nothing talking to another waitress, explain the situation, take ages to sort out that there is a glitch in the program which adds a space before the email address. Sorting this out takes longer that it would have taken for the waitress to take the order in the first place. Technology does not always equal progress!

I simply cannot change the time on my digital watch. When the clocks go forward or back I have to get my son-in-law to adjust it. Have asked him to teach me but he's too quick for me to follow. Same with our digital bedside clock that shines the time on the ceiling. To readapt the hour twice a year I simply unplug it just before midday and then plug it back it and it automatically shows twelve o'clock. Primitive method but functional!

I won’t have my phone connected in my car, because I have the irrational fear that I won’t have disconnected it properly, and people will hear my conversations.
The car salesman thought I was a little crazy!
I can’t work out how to turn off satnav woman, so for days after a long journey she’s directing my every move.

I’ve just completed my sainsburys order and saved it!

They sent me a message saying my pre-payment ‘delivery pass ‘ needs updating …which meant me putting a new bank card on-line ( other expired)

I’ve just paid my half yearly council tax !!

I’ve sent my grandson a birthday card via ‘Moonpig.com’ ( Hes 15 tomorrow)

I’m sending him money via technology to his Go Henry account tmro!!

I’ve just paid my credit card on-line

Oh and I’ve ordered some heavy stuff for my garden , being delivered tmro!! Thank you Amazon ( the delivery man Gregor…will take it right into my back garden for me)

My husband is housebound so all his clothes come via Cotten Traders …online app. Brilliant!

I Monitor my B.P…….heart rate ……how many steps I walk in a day….usually 6000-8000

My watch ( linked to phone) tells me I’ve been sitting too long ( 1 hour)

All my banking ( never had 1 single problem) is done same way. I do keep money in house just in case internet goes a.w.o.l. …. but this is the future and we can’t just ignore.

Please learn to use the tech…. unless you all like queueing in the rain outside your banks / council offices …like a friend of mine does. !!!!

I’ve done it all on my smart I-phone. The I-pad I rarely use …. My little device 6” x 2.5” is my lifeline…..

I bless the day my 84 year old sister dragged me to the Apple shop and stopped me being so ‘blinkered’ .

You just have to ‘play’ with your phone to learn to use it properly…. it’s fun.

You don't sound smug. Some unkind posts on here. Well done you. You sound like you're embracing new technology.
