Travelling abroad by plane, what would you have done?

I had a short city break with my daughter at the weekend. We didn't need to have covid tests but Portugal does require a completed locator form and the airline did require us to wear masks on the flight. The plane was full. I sat in the middle of a three row with my daughter in the window seat and a man in the aisle seat. Shortly after take off he started coughing and sneezing, he looked quite feverish and frequently removed his mask to blow his nose. On landing he stood in the aisle and removed his mask to make a phone call to his family and it was clear that he had a left a sick child at home. During the flight I kept as far away as I could, made sure my mask was fitted closely and on landing I removed my mask, washed my hands and put on a clean mask. tbh I was worried that I would become ill giving me a dilemma regarding travelling home but fortunately I'm fine and have posted a clear covid test. It's given me some faith in wearing a mask but just wonder how others would have reacted.

I would have been in a total panuc. Mind you, I wouldn't go anywhere near an airport or flight at the moment unless it was urgent. I don't really understand why people are flying.

panic

I’d have been quite worried to be honest.

I wouldn't go anywhere on a plane to start with but there is nothing much you can do except request to move seats. I'm sure the crew would not be permitted to move him or put him off - bit like bus drivers or railway staff. It's hard when you start sneezing to stop sometimes. This is going to happen for some time as we leave restrictions behind and learn to live with Covid. I felt very unwell with a fever last weekend. Lateral flows all negative. Finally got PCR result today also negative. My throat is red and I suspect that was the cause. I have read that our immune systems are not coping as well with the seasonal colds and viruses because of lockdowns and not being exposed for 2 years. Hopefully you will be ok foxie48 and hope you enjoyed the break.

I would have been aggravated but turned away from him and kept my mask on. People are very inconsiderate but it’s life. It wouldn’t stop me flying though.

Oopsadaisy1 Thu 14-Apr-22 10:44:37

MrOops has bad Hay fever at the moment and is coughing and spluttering most of the day, it’s difficult because we know it isn’t Covid (we both had it a few weeks ago) but must be disconcerting for others.

We aren’t flying anywhere this Summer, maybe in the Autumn we will wait and see.

I have asthma and bronchiectasis so often cough. I can't help it so display my inhaler as much as I can!

I would find it difficult to fly anywhere for a short break because of climate impact, let alone being shut in with 100s of others to be honest but I do wear a N95 mask as a minimum precaution so would have looked away from him as others say.
I think you did the best you could in the circumstances.

I'd have been quite worried foxie, I think you took wise precautions and thank goodness you've tested negative.

To Kate I'd say I hope to be flying soon, because Canada cannot be easily reached by any other method and I'd really like to hug my son and his family for the first time in almost 3 years. Not an emergency but very much needed!

Esspee Thu 14-Apr-22 11:05:22

I thought that the airlines weren't accepting anyone for travel who appeared to be ill.
I would have requested a different seat but as planes are apparently packed at the moment there would I imagine be little chance of being moved.

Kate1949 Thu 14-Apr-22 11:19:21

Oh Rosie I would consider wanting to hug your son and his family very urgent indeed. I hope you get there. I was thinking more if holidays. If course people are fed up, hard working and have been feeling trapped but, in my opinion, and it is only my opinion many will disagree, you don't HAVE to go.

V3ra Thu 14-Apr-22 11:25:36

Very worrying for you, but you did all you could under the circumstances and hopefully won't have picked up anything from the gentleman, Covid or otherwise ?

Vintagejazz Thu 14-Apr-22 11:37:05

I would have been annoyed and uncomfortable. I'm glad you haven't tested positive.

BlueSky Thu 14-Apr-22 11:40:44

You did all you could do. Let’s not forget not all coughs are Covid coughs. If it still bother you, then best not to travel on public transport till you feel more relaxed.

Pepper59 Thu 14-Apr-22 12:14:39

I don't like flying and haven't been on a plane since the 90s. Definitely wouldn't be on one now, but I do not have close family abroad. It's a difficult thing and I don't think there is much you could have done otherwise. This will be the new reality, selfish people who are ill will take the view I'm going cos I've paid for this holiday. I have decided I have no desire to travel abroad for the immediate future. It certainly is a shame if your health is not the best, but your family are abroad. I think I would invest in the more specialist mask others have talked about.

foxie48 Thu 14-Apr-22 15:01:44

I feel we are in a difficult period of transition, I'm in my 70's and don't want to put my life on hold for any longer than I have to and I've accepted that I might catch Covid. Actually my greatest concern was becoming ill whilst in Portugal and either having to self isolate until I tested clear or do what had made me feel uncomfortable by flying home coughing and unwell. It wouldn't have been easy to find accommodation, change flight etc.

Not everyone who coughs is carrying Covid.. I cough due to asthma and bronchiectasis. I prefer not to go on a plane for the very same reason as above. I don’t think asthma/bronc is contagious, but someone might tell me different

LOUISA1523 Thu 14-Apr-22 21:02:04

I would have been ok with this.....would have preferred he sat else where....but such is life.... but then I have had covid and have had 4 jabs...and all my family, partner, my mum, my kids my GC have all had covid and luckily all very mildly...so I don't tend to think about covid much at all these days...and don't worry about it....I might have had a moment of thinking hope get home OK..and don't have to isolate abroad...but the thought would have been fleeting....I wouldn't not travel on a plane anymore

I’d have done everything possible to keep myself safe, including leaving my seat, as I’m medically vulnerable.

I look after a man who has a learning disability and two weeks ago he followed the plan I’d put in place in case he became ill with suspected Covid:

Day one, he called to say he had a cough, but he felt okay.
Day two, he called to report the cough was not so bad, but he felt slightly unwell.
Day three, he called to say he couldn’t catch his breath.

We dashed to his flat and my husband administered a LFT through an open window (ground floor flat) and it was negative, but I could hear his breathing was very laboured and his colour was very grey. I checked his SATS with my own oximeter (still through the window) and over a period of ten minutes it fluctuated between 70-80!

An ambulance came very quickly (lights and sirens) and whisked him off to hospital where it transpired that he had pneumonia following infection by Type A Influenza.

My point is that it’s easy to overlook that there are other illnesses out there that can mimic Covid symptoms and be just as dangerous.

(Happily, my chap is now out of the ICU and hoping to be discharged in the next few days.)

I think you did what you could, foxie,. I also have an asthma type cough and I must say the ‘better quality’ masks set it off, and if I cough a lot this can make my nose run or sneeze. But I must say that if this was the case I would have explained to you.

Grannyactivist, I’m so glad your chap was able to get help and is recovering... scary stuff!

Daisymae Fri 15-Apr-22 09:15:09

You did as much as you could but I think that we have to accept that catching something is always a risk. I have a relative who is a frequent flyer to Portugal and I would say catches a heavy cold at least half the time.

ElaineI Fri 15-Apr-22 09:45:00

Grannyactivist well done to you and your DH. You probably saved his life.

I agree, there's no way I would fly anywhere at tge moment. I know quite a few people who have developed covid after a flight.

We have one of the most beautiful countries in the world ….. I don’t fly to holidays, it’s so detrimental to the planet! I stay in britain and enjoy our wonderful land. And as for cruisers….80,000 gallons of fuel PER DAY.
should turn all cruise ships into something useful!
