Do you like weddings?

I'm always happy to hear of a young couple getting married and wish them well but..... I really don't enjoy weddings. They seem to be such dragged out affairs nowadays with hours and hours between the ceremony and the meal, then another age while the room is prepared for the band, then another few hours of music so loud you can't hear a word anyone says to you.

Nowadays, if it's someone not too close to me such as a friend's son or daughter I just make an excuse and send a present.

The one where the bride left the reception alone when the groom was discovered in a side room with a bridesmaid

shock

I love weddings and the ones I’ve enjoyed most have been the less formal ones.

The best wedding I have ever been to was my daughter's held in our garden, after her original wedding was cancelled two days before the first lockdown.

I was shielding, so I watched the very intimate ceremony from my conservatory. She was the happiest I have ever seen her!

My wedding cost under a 1000, it was a lovely evening wedding followed by a meal where everyone contributed to that instead of a present

I've got no problems with big weddings but personally I couldn't spend a fortune on one day when I could have things that make a difference to our lives for years

That sounds like the perfect wedding Marydoll!

If people don't want the fuss of a large wedding - buying an outfit , possibly booking a hotel, travel , hanging about waiting to eat not to mention the cost ! The solution is quite simple , wish the happy couple well , buy an appropriate gift if you want to and politely refuse the invitation. No necessity to give a reason , the couple will understand and appreciate your speedy reply. Can't see what all the fuss us about - Go or don't go . Easy!!

That's what I do when possible. But there are times when not going will cause offence.

I don't like weddings either and apparently my OH nephew is getting married next year and we will be invited. I have only met him once, that was Christmas Day before the pandemic hit, he had been to the pub on the way to family for Christmas dinner and he was totally wasted. It wasn't a pleasant experience but apparently it is the norm with him for any event..........the wedding looks like fun.

MissAdventure Fri 15-Apr-22 11:25:28

That'll be a laugh a minute, I bet.

Serendipity22 Fri 15-Apr-22 11:28:41

Well, yes, I enjoy the day, but I cant help but think and how long will it last.

Pounds ten are spent on a lavish wedding and before you know it they're in the divorce courts. I know I shouldn't view allll weddings as such, but thats the way I do.....

My niece married in Disneyworld Orlando. I thought it would be OTT with Mickey Mouse performing the ceremony! It was a wonderful wedding, only 18 guests, the sun shone and the wedding venue was beautiful and tasteful. We all voted it the best wedding we had ever attended.

I love a wedding. I like getting dressed up and I love dancing. Weddings are the only chance I have to hit the dance floor these days.

nanna8 Fri 15-Apr-22 11:49:12

I like dressing up,too. There should be more of it. I so miss the formal nights we used to go to on cruises and I just love it on the rare occasions my husband wears a bow tie and formal jacket. Phwaw.

I love weddings. Our 4 AC all had beautiful weddings and I’ll treasure those memories forever. I’ve also enjoyed the weddings of more distant family or friends. I especially love the church services although not ever has one. I love the music, the bells, flowers, everything. I know music can be noisy and food sometimes indifferent but that’s really not the point of going. Don’t go if you don’t want to but don’t be so critical of how others wish to organise their day. I consider myself very lucky to be invited!

MissAdventure Fri 15-Apr-22 13:07:58

A bit pointless having a thread which asks a question, really, if we are only allowed to answer as others see fit.

Vintagejazz Fri 15-Apr-22 13:41:57

Exactly MissAdventure. If someone disagrees with my view on weddings fair enough. But telling me I shouldn't have one that differs from their's is a bit much.

I thought things like that only happened on tellyshock

Callistemon21 Fri 15-Apr-22 17:09:15

It was paddyanne's story, not mine but I could tell a tale or two ......

AreWeThereYet Fri 15-Apr-22 17:18:22

No. I go when I have to and make a fuss of the bride and groom and try my best to enjoy it and look as if there is nowhere else I would rather be but generally I find them incredibly boring.

paddyann54 Fri 15-Apr-22 17:19:26

Vintagejazz life is way more strange than fiction especially where weddings are concerned.I keep saying I might write a book

Vintagejazz Fri 15-Apr-22 17:24:16

I enjoy a wedding regardless of whose in fact I once worked for a catering company and asked to be specifically chosen as one of the 'wedding' catering team.
