Easter Traditions

New Clarks sandals, one Easter my sister and I were bought blue ones , I was absolutely delighted with the colour! Easter eggs with proper chocolates inside , each one in it's own paper case. A lovely roast dinner followed by afternoon Sunday school while Mum put her feet up and relaxed . I am so lucky to have had such a secure childhood and recognize of course that is not the case for everyone - but I am so grateful for that.

New dress white shoes ones that had to be whitened. Fish on Friday one easter egg on Sunday. We had to go to church but our mum and dad never did.

We were sent to Church every Sunday whilst our parents stayed in bed! I suppose I can understand why now but I remember being quite little and going alone, sounds really quite neglectful now!

My mother would greet us with Hot Cross buns saying, ‘Happy Good Friday’. My father would tut and tell her it should be a somber day. She did it every year.

Easter eggs on Sunday. Mine would last for ages because I didn’t like chocolate.

A friend is another who believes doing washing on Good Friday is bad luck - she says doing any housework on Good Friday is bad luck (I may take up that one!)

When DD’s were young I always bought lots of (very cheep ?) ornament chicks (they are still available to buy now)
and some were glued onto homemade Easter bonnets (used lots of orange and yellow tissue paper) and
some went on krispies nest cakes, with chocolate speckled eggs atop also.

I was going to make an attempt at cleaning, visitors are coming
Ah well, if it's bad luck then I mustn't

I have to clean as visitors are coming and as I've had covid I think it is only fair I clean and open all the windows

Oh yes, those Easter bonnets, lovely.
And nests made out of Shredded Wheat, melted chocolate and golden syrup with mini eggs in them.

Fish on Good Friday and homemade hot cross buns. Quiet day on Saturday and mum hardboiled eggs with onion skins which patterned them then she polished them with butter.
Easter Sunday, all new clothes and we went around the relations showing off the clothes and receiving a chocolate egg or what we called the dyed eggs a Pasche egg.
Chapel in the afternoon, then allowed to eat a bit of egg.
In the evenings what was called an egg" dump".
Each boiled egg was numbered and a competition was held to see whose was the hardest. I believe this also went on in the local pubs where the men bet on the eggs.
Easter Monday a walk in the country and a roll of the boiled eggs down a hill.
In DH village he was dragged around the village by the Chapel singing hymns and getting laughed at by children who were Cof E.
We also piled up our eggs that were in boxes in our front window, it makes me cringe now to think how we were showing off.

I've just seen my neighbour, they are just organising their 'traditional' large family fish and chip lunch at her Mum's house.

So nice she offered to get me some. I'm having avocado salad!

Good Friday Church service, after which bach for hot cross buns, not allowed to eat them before, and still don't, feels wrong. House decorated on Saturday, ready for Sunday, and table laid, fresh flower arrangements etc. Sunday roast turkey with all the trimmings but ordinary stuffing instead of chestnut, and peas instead of sprouts. Christmas pudding to follow! Non edible presents, often handmade, on the table with a small egg, there is so much chocolate around. I don't recall an Easter Egg hunt in the garden, which was seen as a foreign idea, but we do one now, with different coloured eggs for each grandchild to save arguments! More hot cross buns and Simnel cake for tea, with turkey sandwiches.

For several years, in the 1960's, Good Friday was the start of the Aldermarston March, which lasted to the Monday.

Our YCND group, in Hackney, would meet up with our sleeping bags, etc. to get the arranged coach (we always had a large contigent), to the starting point. One year, the march was split into two, with all of us in the East starting off in Essex.

There was incredible arrangements for these marches, with all groups being given colours and numbers. We slept overnight in schools, churches, village halls, large tents, etc. etc. All the sleeping bags and any luggage bags were loaded on lorries (ensuring all were carefully labelled with colour and number to identify them), and these were off loaded at the town we were overnighting in.

Still think back so happily to those wonderful days when I was young and still believed that the future (assuming we were not all blown up), would be better than the present. So glad I did not have the gift of foresight to see ahead to the sad times now.

On Good Friday Mum used to take us out to buy fresh bread, Hot X buns, and smoked haddock for supper.
I think they were the only shops open on that day.

She was astonished I'd never done it when I was young (or even heard of it).
There are more hills in Scotlad than where I grew up ?

I always coveted one of those cardboard eggs with colourful patterns of chicks and bunnies etc., and some of those fluffy little mini chicks inside. Never got one, but we did have chocolate eggs on Easter Sunday. Used to buy them for dds, though.
