Good luck *BlueSky! Perhaps we could start a ‘low carbs’ thread where any of us who are pre-diabetic (or just interested in losing weight) could join in, sharing tips and encouragement?

BlueSky Mon 18-Apr-22 10:15:03

Ordered it! I need first of all to keep a check on my sugar level being pre diabetic and also lose some weight, which I find difficult, despite not eating a lot, perhaps insuline resistance?

Maybe your body is reacting to an actual need for carbohydrates. Instead of sugary rubbish feed yourself healthy carbohydrates like porridge, carrots, ,rice, sugarless breakfast cereal, and wholemeal pasta.

I had a wake up call after routine blood rests showed I’m pre-diabetic. It was a shock to be so high up the scale. I don’t want to be taking metformin or gliclazide and doing thumb pricks etc. So I bought this book on the recommendation of an NHS dietician who held the diabetes prevention programme my doctor had enrolled me on. It’s been an eye opener and the best £16 I’ve ever spent on myself. Nothing is banned but choices/swaps have to be made to bring down my blood sugars. Insulin resistance can happen when fat. Our cells too full of fat can’t accept the insulin which leaves us tired and eating more for ‘energy’.

I could have chosen a Mediterranean diet lifestyle, or low fat but I chose low carb. I didn’t know sugars were carbs. Fruit juice is not your friend. Who knew? Better to eat a piece of fruit - it breaks down more slowly which is better than a sugar ‘hit’ spiking insulin combat.

So I’m on 130g of carb a day. (A non restrictive carb is 260g a day - hello potatoes and pasta!). Basically I’ve cut out crisps, biscuits, cakes, (nice but not nutritional), sweet things such as chocolate (no Easter egg for me this year!). Yes, I can have potatoes, rice, pasta and bread but in moderation and count it as per this book - all photos showing portion sizes so it’s very easy to follow. Disclaimer: I have no vested interest in increasing the sales of this book I just feel evangelical about it!

I’m determined to lose 2sts. So far in 3 weeks I’ve lost just over 5lbs so I’ve a long way to go. But as a nurse once said to me at work “you didn’t just wake up fat one morning. This weight has been coming on over a long time. It will take a long time to shift as there are no quick fixes”.

I’ve worked out that losing 1lb a week will take me to mid September. I’m happy with that as I get another routine blood sugar test in October. Wish me luck! And good luck to anyone else trying to shift some poundage.

My step daughter had covid and has lost her appetite and just can`t be bothered to get up and go.
And Kate1949, i don`t blame you,enjoy your treats.

Kate1949 Mon 18-Apr-22 09:44:41

I've spent the last 30 years (since I started to gain weight after always being a skinny Minnie) trying to keep my weight down.
I'm fed up with it. I'm nearly 73 and I'm going to give myself a break and enjoy rubbishy food now and then.

luluaugust Mon 18-Apr-22 09:38:43

I blame the lockdowns we all felt entitled to treats which we have now got used to, chocolate in my case.

loopyloo Mon 18-Apr-22 09:32:48

Same here! Had covid in January and it's still a struggle.
Don't fancy healthy food at all .

snowberryZ Mon 18-Apr-22 08:26:36

I could have written this.
I have been eating junk for over two months.
I'm determined to start eating healthier as from today.

bluesky had covid end of 2020 into Jan2021.
TeacherAnne yes like you crave crispy, salty or sweet tasting foods. Didn't even buy this sort of food before, now I can eat two packs of chilli flavoured bakes in one go!!! I have vowed not to buy any more cos if not there I can't have. I am determined to do something about it. My god daughter getting narried in July and I want to look as good as I can for the family photos. Plus my 70th later this year and don't want to look a frumpy for celebrations!!! Also my health is a concern as for many of us on this forum.

I’ve currently got Covid and have lost my sense of taste so all I can be bothered eating is bread, crisps and biscuits, oh with chocolate and gin of course! I can’t taste much but seem to crave salty foods and crispy textures. I’ve run out of fruit after six days of isolation and my bread has gone mouldy today so I’m going to make cheese scones tomorrow for a change. Might also make some potato cakes that I can reheat in my air fryer.

I do have frozen meat, fish and veg but am not in the mood to cook. I live on my own so there is no one to prepare meals for me to eat. My sister will go shopping if I ask her, as would friends, but I’m fiercely independent so don’t like to ask but if I don’t get negative tests in a day or so, I’ll have to give in!

Or do an online delivery, but that involves planning meals and my brain can’t cope with that just yet! I’ve not been too poorly, just like a heavy cold, bad chest and very tired but it’s getting very boring now and I crave something tasty to eat but don’t know what I fancy! Contrary or what!

I put on weight during lockdown and so far haven’t felt motivated to go on a diet. I once dieted in my late 30’s very successfully but couldn’t stop. It took being turned down from donating blood and a referral going to my doctor which resulted in blood tests showing the perilous state of my health to make me stop. I fear this happening again.
I do eat very healthily, fresh home cooked food. My OH is a superb cook, I am very good. Our meals are delicious and we enjoy eating them.
I have been justifying my inaction as an unwillingness at my age to deprive myself of what brings me pleasure. Then perhaps I am just getting lazy in my old age. ?

Well this has chirped me up reading this thread as I just seem to want to eat a load of rubbish and don't feel happy with the weight gain or lack of go about me. Know I need to try a bit harder but get awful hard tight hunger pains when I cut down on food and think will just have such and such and before I know it eaten things I shouldn't have and feel so weak afterwards. Need to gain some self control I know.

V3ra Sun 17-Apr-22 23:02:13

I haven't knowingly had Covid, but I am having to have a serious talk with myself about a sensible diet recently.
I think I've gone for the treats on an "I deserve it" basis when there wasn't much else in the way of fun on offer over the last couple of years.
I used to swim every week but my pool closed, so that went, and I haven't got back into it yet.
Payback time now though... ?

BlueSky Sun 17-Apr-22 22:48:56

How long ago did you have Covid Travelsafar? Because it can take quite a while to get back to normal. If it’s a long time then you could suffer with long Covid.

travelsafar Sun 17-Apr-22 21:26:13

I seem to be loosing the fight with healthy food and regular exercise. My palate seems to have changed and I go for all the foods we shouldn't eat and my will power for regular exercise has gone as in so much pain with my back and hip. I worry about it but it doesn't make any difference. I always chose fruit over crisps, biscuits etc in the past and went running and did aerobics several times a week. I also walked everywhere when possible. Now I'm lucky to make it to the end of the garden and back!!! I do wonder if having the delta virus quite badly has changed my palate and my mobility issues are definitely worse since then. I'm not trying g to make excuse for my dilemma but am interested if anyone else has noticed similar changes after having covid.
