What really stupid things, that do not impact on your life, really annoy you?

For me:

The expression 'reach out'

People jumping into shorts and sun dresses the minute the temperature rises above 13 degrees

Signs with apostrophes in the wrong place.

kircubbin2000. I dislike that too, together with the ones who also overuse the words “snub” and “adorable”.

I am regularly annoyed by individuals of all classes and educational levels using "everythink" rather than "everything"

hollysteers Thu 21-Apr-22 18:54:04

The audience screaming and hollering through someone’s song on a talent show.
Baby showers.
Baseball hats the wrong way round.
I am now averse to so many presenters on television I cannot watch some programmes even though I am interested in the topic.
And I hated Victor Meldrew, miserable bugger, couldn’t watch it.

Totally sick of hearing people on tv saying “my bad” !!!! I know they mean my mistake but my bad??? It sounds ridiculous and now I here people where I live saying it as they’ve heard it so often on tv.
It really gets on my nerves -sorry.

TV on in the daytime
Explosive nose blowing

The chirpy female American announcer with her distorted vowels on the World Service in the night when I can’t sleep.

People putting up their Christmas decorations in November.

People leaving their Christmas decorations up until February.

Confusing borrow and lend. Drives me mad.

E.g. 'I will borrow it to you'. IT'S LEND !!!!!

I have to bite my tongue so much for fear of offending. Don't want to sound like a VM grin

Also sat and sitting. 'Is there anyone sat here'. SITTING !!

Sorry for shouting smile

A couple of papers, Mirror or similar post articles and pics every day of 'sweet gesture', 'sweet' present, 'sweet'outfit,'sweet'pictures.
It seems to be the only adjective they can think of and it really irritates me.

The Daily Mail (work experience journalists?) using words like visage instead of face and locks instead of hair

BlueSky Fri 22-Apr-22 15:54:26

Threads/posts reported/deleted! hmm

I think the exclamation "Wow!" should be pensioned off. It's also come into the Italian language so I imagine it has infected other languaes too. Mind you, I say it myself - and then kick myself afterwards!

effalump Fri 22-Apr-22 16:33:46

Caleo I was going to say that Yorkshire people (myself included) always miss the 'h' so I tried to say "How many hours do you work" out loud and it just sounded weired with a breathy 'h' at the beginning of 'hours'.

effalump Fri 22-Apr-22 16:37:05

It fact it infuriates me when someone spells out a word that contains an 'h', eg HAPPY "haitch, ay, pee, pee, why". The letter itself is 'Aitch'. I was giong to say spelt, but I never know if it is spelt or spelled. Happy to be corrected. smile

kircubbin2000 Fri 22-Apr-22 17:52:34

The h in hours is silent.

Witzend Fri 22-Apr-22 19:17:27

Since I’ve just heard it on an advertisement, ‘brekkie’.
My FiL used to say ‘brekker’- possibly even worse.

FarNorth Fri 22-Apr-22 19:25:16

Basis.
On a daily basis.
On a monthly basis.
Gets on my wick.

Pedwards Fri 22-Apr-22 20:25:33

lots of things too numerous to mention, but people starting sentences with ‘so’. So, people in cafes and restaurants asking the staff ‘can I get…?’

Wheniwasyourage Fri 22-Apr-22 21:16:57

When people in TV shows leave their houses/flats and don't turn the lights off. It used to be mainly on American programmes, but I've noticed them doing it (or rather not doing it angry) on Not Going Out.

PunkWomble Mon 25-Apr-22 20:14:31

The horrible Americanism “incentivised”. What’s wrong with just giving someone an incentive? Another really annoying Americanism which George Bush used to come out with, “nucular”. It’s NUCLEAR pronounced “new clear”! How difficult is that?

Witzend Mon 25-Apr-22 20:38:36

Just had another VM moment re ‘obligated’ - I’m seeing and hearing it everywhere.
Whatever happened to good old ‘obliged’?

BBbevan Tue 26-Apr-22 06:38:28

Back story !!!!! I have a history.

BlueSky Tue 26-Apr-22 08:48:05

I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, deleted threads! When there’s an interesting topic you can bet it get deleted! angry

Vintagejazz Tue 26-Apr-22 08:59:52

A thread I was posting on yesterday seems to have been deleted.

Most of the frequently quoted examples above don't bother me, perhaps because, as an expat I am not continually confronted with them. I do love (and use) "my bad" - it is concise, sufficiently apologetic and admits own fault.

What puzzles me is why people feel the need to say "whether or not". "Whether" already includes both possibilities, so what is the "not" there for?

I think the problem with the pronunciation of "hours" mentioned back on page 1 is nothing to do with the "h" being aspirated, but whether you give it one syllable or two.

In my Southern English pronunciation it sounds like "are were". But not "ow were". And definitely not "are" - that's for the toffs.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Apr-22 09:17:58

My mouth just will not go into the shape required to pronounce things differently.
Just as when I used to visit Scotland, people there were unable to replicate an Essex accent.
