What really stupid things, that do not impact on your life, really annoy you?

For me:

The expression 'reach out'

People jumping into shorts and sun dresses the minute the temperature rises above 13 degrees

Signs with apostrophes in the wrong place.

Don’t worry, Moggycuddler - I think there’s quite a lot of us who pronounce “hours” as “ours” (silent h). Not sure how else it should be pronounced, to be honest.

A annoying thing for me are foot wagglers - you know, those who sit at a table in your eye-line , cross one leg over the other (fine with that), and then shake their top foot incessantly, rather like a nervous twitch. I’m sure they’re unaware of what they are doing, but it really irritates me.

All of the above, especially my husband who also says "I've done that for you" when it's for us . And my lovely friend who always mixes up your and you're. It drives me mad, but I'll never tell her.

I think when someone says “passed” they are referring to passing from this life to the next life.

Moggycuddler Wed 20-Apr-22 12:09:37

How should we pronounce hours then, if not "owers" (to rhyme with showers?)
The h is silent. Forgive me, I'm just an ignorant northerner. . .

Refering to the person from whom you rent your property as a "landlord". No one is a lord over me. Its a business arrangement not a social hierarchy.

Whats wrong with the terms "owner" or "property owner"?

We are pregnant., when speaking of a couple. Only a female can be pregnant.
pregnant
/ˈprɛɡnənt/

adjective
1.
(of a woman or female animal) having a child or young developing in the uterus.

Should be 'we are expecting a baby' if you wish to include the partner in the announcement.

Sick. As in, as a presenter said today, 'You can see this on the twenty sick of next month'.

MissAdventure Wed 20-Apr-22 11:57:25

It's sumthink, surely? wine

mimiEliza Wed 20-Apr-22 11:55:32

A certain celebrity who does not pronounce 'motor' on a car advert, it makes me cringe when he says mo'or !
People who say wiv (with), birfday, nuffing, somefing, fursday, free instead of three!

Growing0ldDisgracefully Wed 20-Apr-22 11:51:16

That's a good point Theoddbird.

But just before I try to stop being niggled by silly things, I am irritated by so many things being described as cute. Especially animals being demeaned by being dressed in silly clothes, and then described as cute, and furbabies.
I could write a whole chapter on annoyances caused by my husband, but I'm going to try hard to ignore them (and him?) instead?

mayisay

People who say 'owers' instead of 'hours', including presenters on tv and radio, who really should know better! IMO.

This sounds pretty trivial to me, they sound so similar@
Nucular instead of nuclear though, that's another matter!
I still don't like impact as a verb, to me something "has an impact" it doesn't "impact". I know it's in common use though.

ninamoore Wed 20-Apr-22 11:46:08

Definitely phonetic spelling of business names ??

Theoddbird Wed 20-Apr-22 11:43:19

There is no point getting annoyed with something that you can do nothing about. Just accept as it is. Far less stressful ?

Cornishgreenhouse Wed 20-Apr-22 11:42:52

When apostrophes are used for every plural, every time an s is added so is an apostrophe ?
Owners not picking up dog poo and standing pretending they haven’t noticed what their dog is doing.
Bad manners in general.
I work in a little shop, it’s surprising how many people don’t say good morning/goodbye /hello/thank you when spoken to in a friendly manner.

ShazzaKanazza Wed 20-Apr-22 11:42:13

Grannybags you could be talking about my DH here lol. When he says that I feel like saying ‘well aren’t you a hero’ but I don’t.
Nothing much annoys me really I’m fairly easy going.
People on their phones looking at Facebook or other things while in company really gets to me though.

icanhandthemback Wed 20-Apr-22 11:40:48

The dropping of "ly" on adverbs. It is happening more and more even with newsreaders, high ranking officials, etc. It drives me mad and is one of the few times I shout at the tv!

nanna8 Wed 20-Apr-22 11:39:46

Interesting Petera - there’s a fair bit of it about, too.

MissAdventure Wed 20-Apr-22 11:38:31

I'm a sniffer. blush

jaylucy Wed 20-Apr-22 11:33:44

I can't stand people that sniff as well - being stuck on a long bus journey, first thing in the morning and having a young chap not just sniffing but snorting really made me feel nauseous ! Disgusting habit!
Men (especially those over 40) with pony tails, especially when it's grey and stringy! The number of times that I wish I had a pair of scissors to hand!
Also men of the same age and era that have the same length hair as when they were in their 20s and the central bit over their head has disappeared, just a fringe left ! Yuck !

Ladyinspain Wed 20-Apr-22 11:33:30

"Celeb" mums to be -showing the world their bare tummies every time they leave the house!!
Being called Hun, by shop assistants etc (Im 71)
Yes, people saying someone has passed-instead of died!
Loud telephone conversations in public-Im not interested!
And indeed, most of the previously mentioned ones here!

Vintagejazz Wed 20-Apr-22 11:21:18

Programmes about people choosing their wedding dress, fighting with their neighbours, trying to discipline their children, trying to lose weight, trying to find a partner..... is no activity too private or too mundane to be shared with thousands of strangers?

MissAdventure Wed 20-Apr-22 11:08:14

I don't have any desire to compost anyone else's dog poo.
The dirty b*******s started hanging up bags on the little tree outside my flat.

DiscoDancer1975 Wed 20-Apr-22 10:58:20

GrannyLaine

I'll expand on that one if I may honeyrose?
People who DO bag up their dog poo and then see fit to hang it on a branch where it has the potential to smack you in the face angry

Yes...and it will no longer compost, because it’s in a BAG?

Kate1949 Wed 20-Apr-22 10:52:45

Just as Grandma70s doesn't like Nan or Nana, I can't bear Granny. It sounds so OLD.

Mollygo Wed 20-Apr-22 10:50:13

Blondiescot
Most of us locals would pronounce it something like Ed-in-bruh.

Thanks Blondiescot.
I’ve lived near Quernmore pronounced kwormer and
Gateacre pronounced Ga-tack-er.
I can’t pronounce where I am now the proper Welsh way, even though I repeat it carefully every time I’m corrected.
