My mum sent me one that was "for a lovely couple" smile

We have a neighbour, a friend, who forgets to sign Christmas cards.
We all know who it is from and it has become a standing joke among us.

I wouldn't be offended. probably an oversight.

Cheer up - it could be worse.

If the stamp was put on upside down it could once have been considered treason, now it may only bring life imprisonment!

I seriously wouldnt give it a 2nd thought. Its wouldnt be difficult to deduce that it was indeed a birthday card. I have, twice in the past, received a birthday card with absolutely nothing written in it, I laughed about it, I saw a lighthearted side to it opposed to a negative 1.

We've had a couple of blank Christmas cards and didn't recognise the writing on the envelope

More confusing than rude I'd have thought. I wouldn't worry about it if it happened to me.

GS1 writes to my mum fairly often and always addresses it to Great-Grandma on the envelope. The postman has been amused by this for a while but knocked on the door to deliver by hand the letter addressed to GGT. GS claims he was saving ink!

I have a family member who does this with every card , just gives you a blank envelope, I think he thinks I may want to re-use the envelope but what you would use it for these days is beyond me ! It has always seemed lazy to me.

Like others I imagine this was an oversight. To refer to it as a matter of “etiquette” makes it sound more like something out of Downton Abbey than everyday life in 2022.

timetogo2016 Wed 20-Apr-22 19:14:32

Well it could be worse, they could have written to the youngest resident.

I'm not sure what you are saying here Cookhouse1 was it just an oversight or did your partner deliberately leave the name off for some reason.

MissAdventure Wed 20-Apr-22 19:07:42

They probably forgot.
Why are you concerned they won't be happy?
It won't kill them to feel a bit miffed.

Blossoming Wed 20-Apr-22 18:56:01

I’d think they were becoming forgetful and had forgotten to write the name on.

ElaineI Wed 20-Apr-22 18:51:05

Sounds like a mistake. Wouldn't get offended. No one is deliberately doing that to offend with the price of post now. Unless they also left off the stamp!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 20-Apr-22 18:31:53

Perhaps they were going to check Master/Miss whatever and forgot? Hardly something to get het up over and start a thread about. I expect the card reached the recipient and was appreciated.

Baggs Wed 20-Apr-22 18:28:18

I wouldn't be offended but I would wonder why and think it a bit odd. Didn't your partner know the name? Or was it just a lapse?

BlueBelle Wed 20-Apr-22 18:21:41

I make my own cards and started making one for my friend I put it in the envelope so it wouldn’t get dirty a couple of days later thought I must post that card, quickly bunged the address and stamp on and the next day after it had gone thought ‘oh my goodness did I finish making it’ I haven’t asked her, so can only hope I had, fingers crossed

mokryna Wed 20-Apr-22 17:37:57

A slip of memory to check spelling and unfortunately posted before filling it in. Names have so many different spellings these days eg Antony Anthony.

Davida1968 Wed 20-Apr-22 17:37:53

It's thoughtless, IMO. If done purposely it gives the message: "I can't be bothered".

Elizabeth27

It is probably obvious it is a birthday card, therefore they will know who it is for.

It may be bad etiquette but doesn't really affect anyone. Pick your battles.

Not necessarily Elizabeth, the whole family might have birthdays on the same day
?

Hithere Wed 20-Apr-22 17:31:07

I don't see the issue at all

BlueBelle Wed 20-Apr-22 16:52:57

Well I wouldn’t feel offended but it’s unusual so I d wonder if they’d accidentally left it off or if they d forgotten the name or something but no I wouldn’t take offence

Who would be offended if they received a birthday card from a family member through the post with no name on the envelope? for a grand daughter? my partner did this but I’m concerned her daughter won’t be happy about it my partner doesn’t feel it matters as it will still get delivered! Thoughts please
