Check your height.

I have had a birthday this week. Every year around my birthday I check my height. Simply done and a reassuring way of knowing that I haven’t succumbed to osteoporosis like my mother.
So, what height were you in your youth? What height are you today? If you have shrunk tell your doctor who can provide treatment to prevent further trouble.
If you haven’t shrunk make a note to keep checking every birthday. Simple and effective.

Has anyone shrunk?

Oldbutstilluseful Sat 30-Apr-22 08:31:31

Belated happy birthday Esspee.
Yes, it appears I’ve lost 2 inches but had no idea. It only came to light when I was measured at a pre op appointment recently. Good idea to measure on your birthday.

Weirdly I grew an inch between 25 & 30. Which I've retained despite an unmedicated menopause.

Haven't shrunk noticeably yet!

Most people lose some height as they get older because the discs in our spine flatten and we can also lose some muscle tone which holds us upright. I'm in my 70's and have lost over an inch.

You do seem keen to medicate Esspee. ?

I have lost half a centimetre but I put that down to the discectomy I had in 2013!!!

I was 5ft 6in when younger I am now 5ft 4in I blame hip replacement. I noticed the way I was walking straight away I had to wear a wedge in the shoe opposite the replacement to walk straight. It sounds ridiculous but it’s true my walk eventually did even out.

No, I haven’t shrunk. My height is checked when I have my health MOT.

Shinamae Sat 30-Apr-22 10:45:12

I am 69 now was 5 foot seven but I have shrunk to 5 foot five ?

Daisymae Sat 30-Apr-22 10:54:38

Crikey, if I shrink I will be under 5 feet. No wonder my GC feel like giants! Will measure later.

toscalily Sat 30-Apr-22 10:58:17

Yes, the Height/Width ratio re-adjusted to my hips so overall its still the same grin

This is difficult because I've always added at least half an inch to my height, sometimes an inch. Everyone in my family is taller than me. So I'm not quite sure what my starting height is.

Marydoll Sat 30-Apr-22 11:03:32

I have shrunk by two inches. Spinal fractures caused it. I am now 5ft.

I always wanted to be 5ft 6in! No chance!!.

My mother really suffered from osteoporosis Urmstongran.

I like to make people aware that your doctor can help but the earlier you get treatment the better.

It is so easy to be unaware of how weak your bones are getting but just one measurement a year could give you a far better quality of life as you grow older.

My mother did too Espee and its one of my reasons for staying on hrt .She was only 5 foot tall when she was young and barely 4 ft 7 when she died ,in an incredible amount of pain despite getting some treatment in her late 70's.I wouldn't wish that on anyone .
Strangely when I was measured at my HRT check this year I was taller than I thought I was ,I told the nurse she was havering but she did it agin and got another nurse to do it too and I am officially 5 ft 3...and a half .Must be the pilates ....lol

I was 6’1” at the age of 16
I’m now 6’ 1/2” at the age of 73.

Love my height more now than when I was 16.

Wish my weight had stayed the same !

SueDonim Sat 30-Apr-22 12:34:06

5ft 6in in my youth and 5ft 6in now in my late sixties.

If anyone is concerned about osteoporosis, ask for a DEXA scan. I was found to have a precursor to osteoporosis when I had a scan after breaking my leg. I took meds for five years and I’m now back within normal range. smile

HowVeryDareYou Sat 30-Apr-22 13:14:11

I used to be a short 5ft 2, but am now an even shorter 5ft 1 (I'm 63). My GP and the hospital are aware but aren't concerned (nor am I) as my bone density is good.

timetogo2016 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:32:19

Oh how I would love to be as tall as you muse. It would be especially useful when working out my BMI. ?

MiniMoon Sat 30-Apr-22 14:46:45

I was 5' 4" . Got my height measured when I registered at my GP surgery when we moved. I was 5' 3 and a half. I had a bone density scan after I fractured my wrist about 12 years ago.
Nothing more was mentioned so I'm not bothered.

crazyH Sat 30-Apr-22 14:46:48

I hope I don’t shrink - I will be all ‘width’ and no ‘length’ - what a sight I shall be ?
