Paul was one of my favourites as a teenager, we booked tickets to see him and The Manfreds the first April of lockdown so two years later we saw him and one of the original Manfreds, Tom MCGuiness at our local theatre last night. I am pleased to report that at 80 he still looks good. Still has plenty of puff, when not singing he was on the harmonica, can still stand on one leg for Pretty Flamingo and frequently got down on one knee( on purpose) and could still get up easily!
Voice is still and Tom’s voice is still good. The replacement Manfreds were all excellent too. I feel quite rejuvenated this morning.

I didn't know that about flamingo.

I remember the lyrics in If You Gotta Go, Go Now being thought of as very suggestive.

Still love to hear ‘Pretty Flamingo’.

Takes me back to sitting round our local swimming pool with a gang of friends, listening to it on someone’s transistor radio.

I was about 11 years old.

Some controversy about it, was ‘flamingo’ slang for ‘prostitute’?

Either way, I loved the song and could visualise this beautiful girl in her crimson dress, sashaying down the street and attracting the attention of all the boys!

Just watched a clip from Songs of Praise on YouTube (thanks Grannyactivist), he hasn't changed much indeed.

He still has that wonderful voice too Callistemon.
I love listening to him singing Bad Bad Boy on YouTube.

I knew someone years ago who was in Hair!

yammy, i took my nan to see Cilla Black in Blackpool. She chuntered all the way through about her awful voice, short dress stc etc. I thought i'd done nan a huge favour.

Yes I saw him in Hair too. 1968, in London. I was 18 and quite red faced with the nude scene. ??

Callistemon21 Sat 30-Apr-22 19:56:45

I had a photo of Paul Jones on the ceiling so that I could gaze at him while in bed
I was cheeky to my dad and he ripped it off ?

? and shock nadateturbe

That voice - just wonderful!

Thanks for the memories I never saw him in person but always thought he was lovely. We never got any big groups where I lived. We had to go to Blackpool to see anyone famous and that was only Ken Dodd!!!!

I’ve always liked Paul Jones, but I remember being surprised when he suddenly turned up on the Christian music scene with his wife. He used to be a vocal atheist, then he and his wife both became converts and I think they do quite a lot of talks in churches nowadays. I saw him on Songs of Praise about ten years ago and he’s kept his boyish good looks and his voice was as good as ever. His harmonica playing is really, really good.

Yes we’ve seen him a couple of times at our local theatre. Still has great voice. I used to listen to his radio show.

We used to go to the Floral Hall at Morecambe and sit on the stage when groups like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones etc were on. We had a phase of putting our hands up their trousers sometimes and pulling hairs out from their legs! It tickled us to bits then but I bet it didn’t the musicians! The stupid idiotic things we did!

I saw him and his wife in a restaurant a few weeks ago. I didn't believe my partner that it was him because he looked too young, but another customer went up to him and asked and he confirmed it.

In my thirties I saw him in an outdoor concert at Castleward NI.
My best friend told him how much I liked him and he gave me a huge hug (swoon time).
He autographed my M^S buns wrapper- the only paper I had. I have it in my keepsake box.grin

The Manfreds appeared at one of our local clubs the day 54321 made the charts. Paul Jones trod on me as they pushed their way onto the stage! About 25 years ago he was singing at the theatre I was working in. I had to take a bottle of wine up to his dressing room. Just as gorgeous as ever and I was struck completely dumb.

Oh yes, DH and I were big fans of his and I remember us going to see a film he was in and it was called ‘Privilege’. He had a fantastic voice and I’m glad he hasn’t lost it.

I have a handful of Paul Jones's hair in my loft. In the mid 60s I was one of those screaming girls and just managed to get some.

How did you get his hair? ?

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 15:53:39

I have no idea kitty. Where did the time go? I have, as I'm sure you and many others have, tales of many escapades to tell!

kittylester Sat 30-Apr-22 15:47:19

The things we did indeed, Kate.

From climbing drainpipes to get at Paul Jones to wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 9 and a volunteer. What the heck happened!! grin

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 15:20:44

Loretta Someone, somewhere has a handful of Ray Davies' hair from that day. The poor man. The things we did!

Blossoming Sat 30-Apr-22 15:14:51

Such a fabulous blues singer, and the opening line of Doo Wash Diddy is one of those music ‘moments’.

Can’t believe he’s 80! He’s kind of before my time, but my older siblings were responsible for my introduction to pop, rock and all things in between.

I saw that too.

He appeared in a few things at the old Haymarket Theatre in Leicester too.

Ilovecheese Sat 30-Apr-22 14:54:07

I saw Paul Jones in "Hair!" at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, so I have actually seen him with no clothes on!

Callistemon21 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:53:40

Charleygirl5

Sorry, I have never heard of Paul Jones but I have heard of Manfred Mann.

I am a Freddie Mercury fan.

The lead singer, Charleygirl and gorgeous!

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:51:52

He did eventually. Rescued by police!
