Paul was one of my favourites as a teenager, we booked tickets to see him and The Manfreds the first April of lockdown so two years later we saw him and one of the original Manfreds, Tom MCGuiness at our local theatre last night. I am pleased to report that at 80 he still looks good. Still has plenty of puff, when not singing he was on the harmonica, can still stand on one leg for Pretty Flamingo and frequently got down on one knee( on purpose) and could still get up easily!
Voice is still and Tom’s voice is still good. The replacement Manfreds were all excellent too. I feel quite rejuvenated this morning.

I loved Manfred Mann and preferred Paul Jones to Mike D'Abo. Paul was gorgeous (and apparently still is Nandalot). I'm glad you enjoyed it. I love a bit of nostalgia. We often go to '60s shows.

Yes, I liked Paul Jones

Many years ago I saw Manfred Mann and his wife and small child in Trafalgar Square about 55 years ago. Unfortunately Paul wasn't with them!

Well done to Paul and it sounds like you had a good evening nandalot

Great to hear that he and Tom are still on form. They were one of my favourite bands back in the 60s.

I was a big Paul Jones fan and am envious of you seeing him in concert. I've seen images of him recently and he has aged very well.

Although part of the Manfred's, Paul I still gather does the R & B show on a Sunday night on Radio 2 .
Mind you I used to listen to it with him ,and the late Mike Raven who he took the show over from.

Sorry, I have never heard of Paul Jones but I have heard of Manfred Mann.

I am a Freddie Mercury fan.

Perhaps you are too young to remember him!

I remember saving up to buy The Five Faces of Manfred Mann when I was sixteen. I was heartbroken when it went missing until I discovered it in my brother’s room. ?

I was pulled down from a drainpipe at the back of the Gaumont theatre (I think) in Derby whilst trying to gain access to his dressing room!! I think I was 16 and I had a few dates with the policeman who spoiled my fun. I thought Paul Jones was absolutely gorgeous.

DH's brother was in a band with Manfred Mann before they hit the big time.

kitty - Paul Jones WAS absolutely gorgeous! Would love to see him again.

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:45:48

kitty That reminded me of a group of us fans chasing poor Ray and Dave Davies of The Kinks down a street at the back of The Birmingham Hippodrome. Dave got away by running into a back garden and climbing up onto the roof of an outside toilet. The lady of the house came out and shouted 'Oi you ger orf me bleedin' toilet.' Ray didn't escape blush

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 30-Apr-22 14:48:09

He obviously survived the incident though!?

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 14:51:52

He did eventually. Rescued by police!

I saw Paul Jones in "Hair!" at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, so I have actually seen him with no clothes on!

kittylester Sat 30-Apr-22 15:07:22

I saw that too.

He appeared in a few things at the old Haymarket Theatre in Leicester too.

I have a handful of Paul Jones's hair in my loft. In the mid 60s I was one of those screaming girls and just managed to get some.

Blossoming Sat 30-Apr-22 15:14:51

Such a fabulous blues singer, and the opening line of Doo Wash Diddy is one of those music ‘moments’.

Can’t believe he’s 80! He’s kind of before my time, but my older siblings were responsible for my introduction to pop, rock and all things in between.

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 15:20:44

Loretta Someone, somewhere has a handful of Ray Davies' hair from that day. The poor man. The things we did!

kittylester Sat 30-Apr-22 15:47:19

The things we did indeed, Kate.

From climbing drainpipes to get at Paul Jones to wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 9 and a volunteer. What the heck happened!! grin

Kate1949 Sat 30-Apr-22 15:53:39

I have no idea kitty. Where did the time go? I have, as I'm sure you and many others have, tales of many escapades to tell!

How did you get his hair? ?

Jane43 Sat 30-Apr-22 15:58:51

Oh yes, DH and I were big fans of his and I remember us going to see a film he was in and it was called ‘Privilege’. He had a fantastic voice and I’m glad he hasn’t lost it.
