Can shops still insist on customers wearing face masks?

Have an appointment with Specsavers tomorrow. They have phoned to remind me of that appointment and informed me that I MUST wear a face mask when attending.

Thought this was now down to individuals to decide whether or not to continue using these, did not know that shops could insist on it.

You are all indeed deluded if you think masks are effective. Ask all the hundreds of thousands who wore a mask religiously and still caught covid.

You wear masks to protect others.

The reason some of those who scrupulously wore masks still caught Covid was because of selfish people like you.

I couldn’t have put it better ixion.

Blondiescot does your virologist friend keep her mask in her pocket? Or is it fact a medical grade one?

Well, she's a he, for starters - but that does beg another question, do you not object to 'medical' masks then? The one I wear is medical grade...

Biscuitmuncher Fri 06-May-22 10:09:49

LilacChaser I really feel that people have followed the mask rule so diligently that now they daren't drop it because they know how ridiculous it was

Biscuitmuncher Fri 06-May-22 10:11:17

Blondiescot so everyone wears a medical grade mask then do they? Its like pulling teeth this is

That’s exactly like saying that seat belts are pointless because people still die in car crashes

Use your common sense!

A commodity sadly lacking in some on here...

Cobblers! I am still wearing a mask in certain situations and it’s not because I daren’t stop because I know how ridiculous it was! I do not continue for such a fatuous incorrect reason. I continue because if you are vulnerable or are around people who are vulnerable it is the most sensible thing to do if you have any thoughts for their safety.
Furthermore it would be much easier not to wear a mask and follow the rest of the sheep. It takes courage to stand out from the crowd.

Vintagejazz Fri 06-May-22 11:07:22

I still wear a mask because Covid hasn't gone away, and for some people it can be a very serious illness indeed.

It's a very small thing to do to protect others.

Audi10 Fri 06-May-22 11:13:28

Well they are in our specsavers also the chemists and library and obviously drs surgeries are too

LilacChaser Fri 06-May-22 11:28:52

Biscuitmuncher Yes, it is like pulling teeth. I have gone over and over the reasons why they don't work (including the science) but it's like talking to a brick wall of ignorance.

And they can't even have a sensible conversation - everything is an insult or we're rude (I suggest they try reading back their own posts), or comments are taken personally. They all sound so very defensive, don't they?

Northernlass Fri 06-May-22 11:32:20

For those who still believe that mask wearing isn't an effective way of reducing the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, please read this:

www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/masking-science-sars-cov2.html

It's amazing how many 'experts/scientists' are posting!

FannyCornforth Fri 06-May-22 11:35:27

We should ‘they’ / ‘we’ sound defensive?

I assume that by ‘they’ you mean people who wear masks.

So, what are we defending ourselves against?

People act defensive when they are aware that they have done something wrong; but are in denial.

Or have you misused the word?

LilacChaser Fri 06-May-22 11:43:13

Oh, CDC, those who a few months ago posted another study that said they didn't work.

Can't you see how biased this is? They don't mention the scientific report done on schoolchildren in England where two schools were examined - one of the schools made children wear masks - one didn't. And there was no discernible difference in the levels of Covid caught by the children!

Also, just to even up the balance:

swprs.org/face-masks-evidence

As I've had it pointed out to me the Swiss Policy Research Group have previously printed dubious stuff about Covid, but all they've done here is collated scientific reports that say facemasks are ineffective.

annodomini Fri 06-May-22 12:02:58

Face facts - or lack of facts. Will we ever know how many lives have been saved by the wearing of face coverings? Or how many lost because of the absence of face covering. "There is much to be said on both sides" (Joseph Addison)

annodomini Fri 06-May-22 12:03:22

BTW. I'm on the side of masks!

Biscuitmuncher Fri 06-May-22 12:16:17

LilacChaser they seem to believe a mask saves them from a virus! You couldn't make it up

No, we just prefer to believe the scientific evidence - of which there is plenty - rather than some keyboard warrior with an axe to grind!

They ???? My oncologist ?
Do just go away you two totally self centred uncaring people.

I’m going to my active against cancer exercise class now where the instructors will both wear masks as they want to minimise the risk to us. I really hope this thread ends by the time I return as it has well and truly upset me.

FannyCornforth Fri 06-May-22 12:41:40

Lucca hope that it goes well.
Ignore it; it’s just attention seeking.

Lucca, take care, enjoy your class and pay no heed...flowers

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 06-May-22 13:22:22

These people are in a very small but vociferous minority Lucca. Ignore them. They’re not worthy of your energy or headspace. The rest of us are considerate and fully understand the need for masks to be worn. You certainly won’t find me in a shop or other indoor public place without one and if anyone thinks I’m stupid I couldn’t give a (insert expletive of choice).

25Avalon Fri 06-May-22 13:32:40

Lucca please don’t let these mask deniers upset you. You know what is right. Your oncologist knows what is right. Why does anyone want to persuade us otherwise? Just forget it. Nil ignorami carborundum. Go to your class. Try to avoid pointless stress. Above all keep positive.

LilacChaser Fri 06-May-22 13:41:42

And we all know about Sweden's reluctance to enforce face masks, don't we?

Well, just look at this:

Fgs shut up LilacChaser. You have already upset a respected poster who is terminally ill. Isn’t that enough for one day? Keep your views to yourself or exchange PMs with your ally Biscuitmuncher. The rest of us are sick of them.
