Just discovered I'm a Mif! (lighthearted thread)

While enjoying a novel which evidenced British class distinction (mentioned under Books thread today), I was amazed and amused to find I'm a Mif "which is absolutely not done!".

This means Milk in first.

I'd never realized there was any snobbery attached. In fact, had read that the choice of when to put the milk into tea depended on whether or not delicate porcelain cups are being used. If so, it is sensible to start with the milk to prevent the risk of boiling tea cracking the cup.

I don't use porcelain cups and have always started with the milk and do not intend changing.

How about you? I DID say this is a lighthearted thread!

Gracious, no! Definitely a MIL!
My family, especially my parents and grandparents, would turn in their graves if I was a MIF. Not just that - but one never stirs one’s drink, one gently mixes it with genteel sideways move, ents! ?

I'm definitely a MIL. How do you know how much milk to put on until you see the strength of your tea? I hate it milky so I want to know the spoon would stand up in the cup before I put in more than a drop of milk.

Mif here too, I drink my tea very, very weak ?

20 0dd yearsago my daughter brought a new boyfriend home ,he put 6 spoonsful of sugar in his mug then a teabag and milk before the boiling water.....he left the bag in until the tea had all been drunk. It turned my stomach.Thankfully he didn't last long

I had boyfriend who would three quarters fill a mug with Horlicks powder, top it up with hot milk and eat it with a spoon ?
He didn’t last long either! ?

MIF here, always. I sometimes do use porcelain cups (vintage not posh). One of my lovely Welsh grandfathers taught me how to make a pot of tea, therefore a cup.
Apparently I was a dab hand!

I hadn’t got my glasses on and quickly read the title thought it was MILF and decided this is a bit of a racy thread! Rather reminiscent of mumsnet

I've gone the other way: tea strong enough to stand a spoon in, but coffee kind of weakish.
It might be because I am trying to cut down my sugar, but I find coffee bitter lately.

Whether it's our usual loose tea or teabags all tea is made in a teapot so always milk first. I've read that milk last scalds the milk which is why it will taste different Gin.

Never heard that before. Interesting!

I’m sure she is MissA flowers
I’ve been known to leave my tea bag in as tea was never strong enough for me. Now I like a paler cuppa, but coffee is still strong and black! cafe

Tif for me (or is it Mil?). DH is of the Mif persuasion, so one has to turn a blind eye, if one ever expects to get a cup of tea made.

Milk ruins a good cup of tea or coffee. I gave it up 54 years ago when living in a country that only had long life or sterilised milk.

Thank you. She is very, very missed, lately.

But she was pernickity about her tea; listening in case you took the teabag out too soon.

Milk after the teabag has had time to stew for a bit.
My girl used to leave the teabag in whilst she drank her tea. smile

I went off milk in tea when I was pregnant with DD1 36 years ago. Never got the taste back so always black. Also went off coffee but once she popped out I enjoyed it again.

Bizarrely I put milk in last at home and milk in first if I’m out.
I have no explanation as to why.

Minimizing an offense while insulting the American English - justified as a joke

Classy

hollysteers Thu 12-May-22 19:29:38

Hithere please do not use that Americanism “s***s”, it offends me.
(Only joking?)

I went off tea during my last pregnancy and still can't bear the smell of it. That was 44 years ago now.
