Reach out

Oh this is one of my pet hates!!

I used to hear it a lot at work. Shall we reach out to Joe?

You mean, shall we phone him?!?!?!

Aaargghh!

Me too. It sounds so feeble.

It conjures an image in my head of someone trying to grab you. I don't like it at all.

Oops. I’ve just used that very expression on another thread but hopefully in context
‘it takes courage to reach out and ask for help’.
I wouldn’t use it to say I’m phoning a friend for a catch up but I might use it if I felt someone was in need as in ‘shall we reach out to Joe’ if Joe seemed to be depressed and withdrawn. It symbolises extending a hand to draw someone in.

Oh I think that's all OK LauraNorderr, that's what the phrase means. But if they just mean "Shall we phone x" or shall we send him an email, that's something else.

I agree Volver, if my MOT provider ‘reached out’ I’d probably smack his/her hand. Unless of course my car had failed, I might need sympathy ?

Agreed. I hate “reach out”.
When you think about it, “ get in touch” has some unwanted connotations!

I always connect 'reach out' with life boat rescues and crewmen reaching out to rescue people from the sea
