Things you think can make you look older than your years!

While having a discussion with two friends this subject came up! They were saying the way some people dress can look a bit matronly! I was saying but it’s not all about dress sense I think having a positive attitude and a smile makes you appear happier so therefore younger, it’s not always about how a person dresses! What do you gransnetters think!

MargaretinNorthant Tue 24-May-22 13:43:41

Well, at 84 I can truthfully say you have made me feel totally inadequate fashion wise!

Cambia Tue 24-May-22 13:44:04

Everyday I go for a morning walk with no make up on and think that’s ok. Then I get home and apply my make up and definitely knock five years off my face! Would love to go without but always look a bit tired without it, once it’s on I feel so much better!
Dyed hair from a box can be very ageing. Highlights help.
Baggy trousers and trainers, fleeces all useful but not beautiful!

Going by this thread, it seems that there are two types of women: those that put themselves down, and those who put others down

My makeup must be ‘artistic’ then. I don’t know what ‘fashionable’ makeup is unless you mean thick black eyeliner and false eyelashes. My eye makeup is subtle. I don’t like makeup on my face. I don’t think you would consider I looked silly if you saw me but I might think you and your friends looked your ages.

Agree with you! I wear make up as do most of my friends, natural coloured lipstick makes a heck of a difference and brightens my face. I also think a little makeup takes 10 years off. I also don't look silly ?

To be fair, most people are simply responding honestly to the thread title’s question

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 13:46:43

All of the most full threads lately are along the same lines.
Dimming another persons light doesnt make your own shine any brighter.

It certainly proves that ageism is an acceptable form of bigotry.

Can you imagine:
‘Things that make you look blacker than you are?’
Or
‘Things which make you look gayer than you are?’

Ditto disabled; female etc

It’s okay to be old, isn’t it?
I thought that it was; especially on a site specifically for ‘the over 50s’

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 13:51:13

It's true, people are just responding, but it's always fairly easy to see how a thread is going to go, and to predict that some are going to have an unpleasant end......

Casdon Tue 24-May-22 13:51:52

FC I don’t think anybody is being deliberately mean on this thread, people were asked what they thought and have replied, but there’s nothing personal about any of the comments is there, I don’t think anybody has put anybody else down?

^Why are so many governed by fashion?..... which must.,. necessarily change to ensure that people keep on spending^
?

What widgeon3 said is true - fashions change to encourage us to spend money.

In some ways it's good otherwise we'd never have been liberated from corsets but constantly trying to keep up with fashion is not always a good idea.
There have been other threads encouraging us to wear what we have in our wardrobe to try to help save the planet!

Well said, FannyCornforth

Alison333 Tue 24-May-22 14:05:34

Haven't noticed anybody being nasty on this thread but I have noticed that some people have some very fixed ideas (e.g. all Hotter or Skecher shoes are frumpy). Having such fixed ideas must surely be ageing in itself!

FannyCornforth Tue 24-May-22 14:07:55

Just to clarify, I accused no one of being ‘mean’ or ‘nasty’
I said ‘putting others down’.
And I have read the full thread.

Thank you Callistemon

FannyCornforth Tue 24-May-22 14:10:00

Anyway, just ignore me. I certainly don’t want to start an argument.
It was just my observation

NotSpaghetti Tue 24-May-22 14:16:15

I honestly thought this was a generally lighthearted thread. Like Casdon I hadn't seen anyone putting anyone down Fanny and if anything I've said makes you, or people, feel like that, I'm genuinely sorry.

Most of us wear things we know make us look older - I have arthritis and wear lots of "sensible" shoes. I may buy the ones I feel less frumpy in but they are nevertheless shoes more suited to older people.
I have a cardigan that I love because of familiarity and comfort that is a decidedly "older person's" style. I have a "wedding outfit" bought for its cut which suits me but it's in what I consider to be an "older person's" colour which I don't really care for - it suits me well enough to still feel ok in it though. I take it as a "win" that it fits me - no mean feat in my particular body! One day I may get round to having it dyed!

Most of us know and accept that life and living changes us.

I didn't think people would feel "got at" here so apologies again.

FannyCornforth Tue 24-May-22 14:21:23

Oh no, NotSpaghetti, please don’t apologise! I feel like the
baddie now!
Please don’t think that I’m being judgmental - it was just my observation.

I’ve started a thread on clothes that we like.
It has no where near as many comments.
I just happen to have noticed that we often feel more comfortable being negative about stuff

Callistemon21 Tue 24-May-22 14:22:35

NotSpaghetti no need for an apology as far as I'm concerned

Well that's me today and I'm just wondering if I should change before I go to the supermarket- you never know who might be eyeing you up and down!
My cardigan was Land's End last year but already gone tatty.
Skechers on my feet!
???

I'm sorry but I did not do either in my post so I disagree with you!

Nanna29 Tue 24-May-22 14:34:35

Who remembers gok wan fashion show? Your supposed to dress to suit your body. Im in menopause so I have a bloated tummy I think I look pregnant I like to wear wrap dresses. I think they suit me wear with trainers

annodomini Tue 24-May-22 14:39:11

Talking of scrawny arms - or were we? I noticed, when Anne Robinson was wearing short sleeves, she appeared to have a scar up each arm from elbow to armpit. Would I be right in thinking that she has had surgery to get rid of 'bingo wings'? If so, it really didn't look very successful. She does go on a bit about all the 'work' she's had done on her face.

Bazza Tue 24-May-22 14:41:21

My best friend says she would rather be mutton dressed as lamb than mutton dressed as mutton. She mostly looks fabulous.

Candelle Tue 24-May-22 14:50:06

Is this thread really putting women down?

I think some comments are helpful and could make us realise that we could do better - which we probably all can.

I do think that older women who dye their hair dark brown or black ages them terribly: perhaps someone who is doing this but didn't realise that it doesn't suit them may in future try a lighter shade. Is is being helpful, non?

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 14:52:39

Better than what?

Vintagejazz Tue 24-May-22 14:56:49

I think some of the posts have crossed the line between general pondering on what can make you look older, and being a bit sneery towards the way some older people dress.

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 14:58:53

As per usual.
