Things you think can make you look older than your years!

While having a discussion with two friends this subject came up! They were saying the way some people dress can look a bit matronly! I was saying but it’s not all about dress sense I think having a positive attitude and a smile makes you appear happier so therefore younger, it’s not always about how a person dresses! What do you gransnetters think!

I think some of the posts have crossed the line between general pondering on what can make you look older, and being a bit sneery towards the way some older people dress.

I think that too and if you throw the smugness into the mix....

Sometimes people look they way they are, due to illness or disability.
You would accuse me of slouching, if you saw me, because I have spinal fractures and a curved back. In addition, despite three monthly visits to the dentist, my teeth are not in a good state, for a number of medical reasons. Bad teeth are not always due to neglect and lack of personal care.
Thank goodness, I haven't taken some of the judgemental comments personally.

However, I do stand by my comment about, baggy, saggy bottomed, too short trousers. That can be easily rectified

Those god awful fleeces with wolves or bears on them. Wearing sandals with the worst feet possible. Radley bags.

Candelle Tue 24-May-22 15:46:07

Miss Adventure better as in 'could do better'! Unless you know you are as perfect as you could be in which case you wouldn't have room for improvement.

Many of us become stuck in a rut, wearing the same things over and over again despite wardrobes full of other things. If we had a critical eye run over us, we may be brave enough to change our look. Some of the suggestions here indicate that others have looked and made a judgement, I believe that we are all guilty of doing this but... we may just learn something from the things deemed 'a no no'. It does not demean women per se, just that if others notice there could well be room for improvement or... looking better.

Awww, I had d to work really hard to get my poor old mum to wear sandals on her awful, crippled feet
I convinced her nobody would be looking.

Years of pain etched on one’s face.

Kate1949 Tue 24-May-22 15:54:01

Exactly Marydoll. Most of us can't help how we look. I have full dentures (since the age of 11) so have never really smiled properly. Everyone looks better when they smile doesn't apply to me. Now total hair loss, although no one would know I don't think. None of it my fault.
I am doing my best like most of us.

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 15:54:16

How very true!

Maybe they don't want to 'improve'. Maybe they're happy dressing for comfort rather than style and don't need judgmental people making sneery comments.
Thinking, in a detached way, that 'Caroline would look much younger if she changed her hair' is very different from making supercilious and rather smugly judgmental comments and comparisons with your better dressed selves as some on here have done.

A lot of modern trousers are 'ankle grazers'
I'm confused

So wearing comfortable sandals if one has bad feet is a no-no, is it, even in hot weather?

I'm sorry, but if it offends you don't look.

Must search out my Radley bag and use it, it was a gift from a friend.

FannyCornforth Tue 24-May-22 16:06:06

This is silly now!
How can a bag make you look old?
I bought my first Radley bag when I was 25.
I was extremely proud of it as it was £££
Still in use (special occasions) today.

I wish mine had a long strap but otherwise I like it.

I expect all my basic are non-U

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 16:10:14

Nobody will ever tell me what non-u means.
I've only ever seen it used on here.

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 16:12:17

Both please.
Thank you! smile

Nancy Mitford has a lot to answer for. It was she who, in 1955, set out in print what had never been written before – the unspoken rules for being ‘U’ or upper-class, and ‘non-U’. Her article, published in the CIA-funded magazine, Encounter, provoked an outcry, not least from her old friend Evelyn Waugh. In an open letter denouncing her for lobbing this grenade into British society, he wrote: ‘There are subjects too intimate for print. Surely class is one?’

Except now it is GA or non-GA!

Some people on here use it but don’t know what it means, so worry not!

MissAdventure Tue 24-May-22 16:19:53

Well, now I shall try to insert it into the odd comment here. smile
Just so people think I'm totally U.
