It was just my observation

Just to clarify, I accused no one of being ‘mean’ or ‘nasty’
I said ‘putting others down’.

Haven't noticed anybody being nasty on this thread but I have noticed that some people have some very fixed ideas (e.g. all Hotter or Skecher shoes are frumpy). Having such fixed ideas must surely be ageing in itself!

What widgeon3 said is true - fashions change to encourage us to spend money.

In some ways it's good otherwise we'd never have been liberated from corsets but constantly trying to keep up with fashion is not always a good idea.
There have been other threads encouraging us to wear what we have in our wardrobe to try to help save the planet!

FC I don’t think anybody is being deliberately mean on this thread, people were asked what they thought and have replied, but there’s nothing personal about any of the comments is there, I don’t think anybody has put anybody else down?

It's true, people are just responding, but it's always fairly easy to see how a thread is going to go, and to predict that some are going to have an unpleasant end......

Well, at 84 I can truthfully say you have made me feel totally inadequate fashion wise!

It certainly proves that ageism is an acceptable form of bigotry.

Can you imagine:
‘Things that make you look blacker than you are?’
Or
‘Things which make you look gayer than you are?’

Ditto disabled; female etc

It’s okay to be old, isn’t it?
I thought that it was; especially on a site specifically for ‘the over 50s’

All of the most full threads lately are along the same lines.
Dimming another persons light doesnt make your own shine any brighter.

My makeup must be ‘artistic’ then. I don’t know what ‘fashionable’ makeup is unless you mean thick black eyeliner and false eyelashes. My eye makeup is subtle. I don’t like makeup on my face. I don’t think you would consider I looked silly if you saw me but I might think you and your friends looked your ages.

Agree with you! I wear make up as do most of my friends, natural coloured lipstick makes a heck of a difference and brightens my face. I also think a little makeup takes 10 years off. I also don't look silly ?

Everyday I go for a morning walk with no make up on and think that’s ok. Then I get home and apply my make up and definitely knock five years off my face! Would love to go without but always look a bit tired without it, once it’s on I feel so much better!
Dyed hair from a box can be very ageing. Highlights help.
Baggy trousers and trainers, fleeces all useful but not beautiful!

Fog coloured clothing ('it'll go with anything') and neglected feet.

Long grey hair,plaits, hair in a bun. Long skirts with flat granny shoes,cardigans
- yup. Sums me up. Maybe not the plaits.

Oh dear, I have quite large but rimless glasses. Since when did rimless glasses age someone? They’re less obvious.

Couldn’t agree more, especially when coupled with over bleached hair and a baseball cap.

Fleeces, beige anoraks, long, dry grey hair, especially if in a ponytail or plait, rimless glasses, missing teeth, shapeless clothes, anything from the Damart catalogue.

I agree with what you say, Casdon. I am a very visual person and ‘seeing’ nature, fashion, artworks, etc, stimulates me daily.

I remember hearing once "If you dress badly people notice the clothes if you dress well people notice you"

Surely we are all individuals I'm at that age now I wear what I want if people don't like it then tough I don't care

I don’t think many of us are governed by fashion widgeon3, but showing an interest in the changing world around you, of which fashion is part, is surely the opposite of being less interesting as you suggest, it shows you are fully engaged with the current world. It certainly doesn’t mean you’re an airhead who has no other interests or conversation. Who wants to look and feel beige after all?
