My daughter wore a lot of beige, grey, earthy type colours.
They suited her.

Things you think can make you look older than your years!
(415 Posts)While having a discussion with two friends this subject came up! They were saying the way some people dress can look a bit matronly! I was saying but it’s not all about dress sense I think having a positive attitude and a smile makes you appear happier so therefore younger, it’s not always about how a person dresses! What do you gransnetters think!
In the end what you wear must come down to what you feel comfortable in (and that will vary - some women will feel at home in bright colours, jazzy prints, etc, but for some that would make them feel awkward and uncomfortable), what you can afford (or how good you at at finding bargains / altering clothes), what you are doing that day (gardening / childminding a toddler / going out for lunch to a posh restaurant), your health needs, etc.
I was tempted by this animal print raincoat in Marks and Spencer yesterday - might go and have another look today!
My two daughters were appalled a couple of years ago when my 65 year old neighbour was buying very young styled clothing for herself & thinking she was being clever, from a chain aimed at 18-30 folk. They are not extremely well made but fashionable. I would never attempt to dress like a twenty something, however she does spend a lot of time socialising with her twenty something daughter and granddaughter of 20. I dress age appropriately in stylish clothing that I know suits me. I agree some people don’t make the best of the good features they have, but many just do not have the budget either. I cannot bear seeing women over 60 botoxed to look 30, with false eyelashes, nail extensions, it’s fake and they don’t suit it. Older ladies with very long hair don’t impress me either as it often looks poor quality and thinning, with split ends.
One sight that has stayed with me for years was driving through Blackpool seeing a coach load of passengers disembark, it was a sea of beige and taupe. It was impossible to distinguish one from another. Until then I always thought beige or taupe were useful colours they went with everything but not it seems people of a certain age especially topped with great hair.
Why are so many governed by fashion?..... which must.,. necessarily change to ensure that people keep on spending
?
Personally I am willing to pay a lot for my hair cut, to have it styled and easy to maintain. I see so many older women who look like they have given up and have been badly shorn or permed. I think over dyed, dark, hair can be very ageing.
As for foundation make up, less is more in older age. Thick foundation accentuates the wrinkles! I think a very thin layer of foundation and a very light tan type lotion can give a healthy looking glow. But age is just a number and it's what is going on inside that says more than the outside....and smoking and drinking heavily are very ageing for the skin.
For clothes I think investing in some timeless, well designed items from more upmarket designers works well...and those can be found on Ebay at a fraction of the cost. Longer shift linen dresses in self colours accessorised with scarves is an ageless look. Then you don't have to worry about cellulite!
IMHO bright jazzy designs are not for older women, and showing a wrinkled cleavage is not nice.
I read this in a book called ,'Senior Moments'.....
At 20 we worry about what people think of us; at 40 we don't care what others think about us; at 60 we realise they haven't been thinking about us at all'.
Oh me, oh my!
I remember well, several years ago about women finding it necessary to' smear themselves' in the grease of dead animals' in order to register at all
Have wonderful conversations with those who may or may not BUT generally find the people who seem to avoid these conventions( insisted upon by whom ?) more interesting. Surely life is more than this requirement?
My shape is not suitable for the latest fashion requirements
I must wear purple with pink spots, if necessary' in order to clothe the body
Life is too short to order and return inferior stuff on line
My mental state is still acute.

Zonne ? me neither!
I have on a top which has been described somewhere on this thread as ageing and old-fashioned and navy
linen trousers.
DH said "oh, you look nice" (he's easily pleased)
I'm going to the supermarket - should I change first?
I've struggled to straighten my naturally curly (looks like a bad perm) hair, hope it doesn't rain.
I think a true free spirit doesn't have to work so hard at proving they are.
They just are.
Hmmm... if I gave a toss what anyone else thinks, based on this thread I'd never leave the house!

Sticking to no colours only beige, white and black as a wardrobe.
Some people may say that is chic!
matronly is lovely, I love the way Maggie Beer on Australian bake off looks, she doesn't try to hide her years but embraces them, as does Mary Berry. I always feel sad when someone dresses trying to look younger, that always is sad
The point is that some people don't actually care how old or young they look, and good on them all.
It's not compulsory to try to look "young" (although the people I've met who do, are actually the ones who don't give it much thought - probably good genes?)
Everyone is unique; that's the beauty of being human.
Oh and for me I am me, for me, not anyone else. Natural full makeup, regular hair appointments and so on help me feel good.
Now I must go as I'm at one of my fave places this afternoon: the hairdressers ?♀️??♀️

I'm 60!
???
Sorry, but what age group are we discussing on here?

How about stylish, colourful scarves, just to put the cat among the pigeons?
Heehee, I have to agree. I stopped wearing them when I realised they draw attention to the very area you’re trying to cover up!

The worst thing about women, is not the way they dress, stand, walk, their hair, teeth, makeup or not etc etc is other women being judgemental and, dare I say it, smug.
I admit to being judgemental about a pleated skirt, but I would never look another woman up and down with disdain.
Oh God..I know people younger than me who dress like older people, never do their hair and just act and look older thsn they are. There mindset is the same too.
I'm 60! I don't look or act like it. I'm regular told I'm a free spirit (yup) unique in style and unique in mindset.
The majority think I'm mid late to 40s. My 2 close friends are the same like me
I love colour and it's what I wear. I have ombre long hair which is copper and deep red.
Old lady stuff for me equates shopping in Bob Marche, M & S and London & Edinburgh wool shop.
Also only wearing lipsticks, curled permed short hair. Then there is the daggy macks, flat old fashioned shoes and old fashioned mind set. Oh yes and the tartan shoppers with the plastic rain hats

Invisible to the opposite sex I meant.
Isn’t that why women once they get to a certain age ( & men for that matter ) try to look younger? To still look attractive to the opposite sex?
Why bother otherwise?
I had some interesting conversations with men last weekend and I doubt any of them were interested in "chatting me up" at our ages.
A deep tan. It both causes wrinkles and accentuates them.
As above but but with a deep cleavage added.
A short back and sides hairdo.
Elastcated waistbands.
Waterfall cardigans.
Not necessarily all on the same person ?
a good figure and a happy smile go a long way. If you look healthy, you look better. You don't need to look «young», you just need to look the best you can.
Exercise, a good diet, a sound cultivated mind...and friends, make you look like somebody who enjoys life. Happy people look younger!
I never wear make-up except if going somewhere special. Constantly wearing make-up ages the skin (a friend from years ago constantly wore it and she now looks ancient but is actually much younger than myself). I find exfoliating your face once a week and a smile is all that is necessary. Many of my gentlemen friends tend to agree !
Anna Wintour always seems to wear sleeveless dresses. I saw a close up photo of her recently and her arms were really scrawny. She would have looked so much better with short or elbow length sleeves. If she can’t see that in her position, heaven help the rest of us! I wear elbow length sleeves now, sleeveless is no longer a good look for me and short sleeves make me look too broad shouldered.
Grey hair, but the white verging on blonde can be very glamorous. Long hair can still look nice on an older woman if styled well.
Those large linen baggy dresses with big pockets.
Makeup, well applied can make a world of difference.
And I’m wearing second time around, pinafore dresses! Love them, just change the sweater or blouse underneath and ready to go.
