Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

And, yes, I do realize that a great many of you consider yourselves British, rather than a national of one of the UK countries. Just saying. If I were in one of your countries, I would probably fly my country's flag and celebrate the Queen's holiday.

What? No sorry. Of course she has a private life. She's the most private person in the country.

How much is she worth? How does she feel about her children? What are her politics? What are her hobbies? What does she like to watch on TV? What's her favourite film or book? What's she doing tonight? Not what the PR machine tells you - actually what are the answers to those questions?

Quite frankly, telling a 99 year old former member of the forces that she's better off than the queen because she "probably had a private life" is pretty shameful.

Well thanks for that. Perhaps I should have said ‘family life’.

Lucca of course I have read your posts - all of them !! I do think it sad that the celebrations are not regarded as the pick me up the Country really needs. So many making uncalled criticism of a selfless 96 year old not able to answer back. Oh well, each to her own.

Where did I criticise the queen ????

happycatholicwife1 Mon 30-May-22 21:14:11

Quite a few wet blankets in the UK today. If I lived in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, I would fly my country's flag with the deepest pride, as I do here. I completely understand why people would want to be what they are ( be it Welsh, English, Scottish, Irish) and support their individual nation. Nationalism has gotten a bad name because of the Third Reich. You can love your country and put it first above others and not be a Nazi or any other kind of terrible person.

You probably had a private life though. Something she had to give up.

Bijou Mon 30-May-22 20:39:31

So what. She is 96. She has never had to worry about money, health or somewhere to live. I am 99 had to work in London during the Blitz, served in the WAAF, when demobbed couldn’t find anywhere to live because having been in the Forces wasn’t on a housing list. Homeless with a baby. Had to manage on meagre rations. Have had cancer twice.

Glad it’s not just me - I can take it or leave it!

Callistemon21 Mon 30-May-22 20:21:19

Sorry, that post was for Casdon ?

Callistemon21 Mon 30-May-22 20:20:23

I haven't noticed anything official happening here but the town clerk seemed relieved to hear that people were organising their own grin

A pity, I enjoy a bit of beacon lighting

I like the council’s response that they are celebrating by serving the school children with coronation chicken for lunch!

But there is something happening in Glasgow? I’m getting confused! Is it that what is happening isn’t being funded by the Council?

The council aren't funding anything

Here's former leader of the Conservatives in Scotland making a show of himself.

I'm not really a huge fan of the Royals as we had the Queen and family rammed down our throats when I was a child in the 50s/60s but it's nice for people to have something to celebrate especially after all the lockdowns. i live in England where every town and village seems to be holding parties, but used to live in North Wales, where many people are not keen on the royal family as they see them as 'English.' Some of my friends who still live in Wales tell me that there are very few special events in aid of the Jubilee there.

Lots of other parties and celebrations planned, too.

Perhaps your friends live in a different Wales

I’m in mid Wales, and my nearest town is decked out like Jubilee central. There’s bunting strung up everywhere, the shops have had a window dressing competition which has been hotly contested, there’s a beacon lighting event, a party at the park, a big street party and lots of small ones people have organised themselves. The Welsh like a bit of hwyl.

??Bravo Glasgow ??The right approach.

Yes, a party, beacon lighting ad other events.
Something to cheer up people after the last couple of years
??

Just imagine if instead of all the hype and performances being put on they had chosen instead to build some social housing the length and breadth of the country and called it the Jubilee Estates. Better use of money and a lasting memorial which would take people off the streets.

there seems to be a lot of housing being built, including social housing , up and down the country.

People don't want to be segragated and their children labelled in the future "the kids from the Jubilee estate".

I've had a good idea!!
Let's plant lots of trees ? ??????

MissAdventure Mon 30-May-22 19:03:11

I'd be in favour of that, for sure.
I won't be making or eating trifle, or celebrating anything, just because it's not really my type of thing.

I may have done when my girl was little, but not now.

Besides saluting Her Majesty for having worked for twice as long as many do in a lifetime, a celebration of everything that's great about our nation is a good idea after two years of pandemic, putting up with a misbehaving prime minister and a war on our doorstep.

Aveline Mon 30-May-22 18:32:02

Casdon those are just the official events. There are loads of just happy get togethers that aren't recorded anywhere.

I agree there were a lot of people talking sense in terms of scientists and statisticians etc. Maybe the poster meant that the Queen said exactly the right thing to the nation to make people feel less alone and desperate, because boy, were we scared at that time.

StoneofDestiny Mon 30-May-22 18:13:47

We are told by many that there are more serious things going on in the country than getting to the bottom of having a lying Prime Minister whose government partied through a National Emergency Pandemic, make lawbreaking 'nonsense' and brought the Metropolitan Police into Disrepute - and what takes over the newspapers and people attention.............tea parties for another royal extravagance.
Heartily sick of it all.
