The flight prices are more expensive because the children are off school. Flights and holidays always more expensive in school holidays.

Enough with the jubilee already.
(689 Posts)The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Our schools had Friday off last week
I think teachers like the Friday before half term option because they can get away early on their holidays.
The 3 day weekend at a later is welcome, but you can't do a lot with it.
Not that it bothers me too much when we get it because I can pretty much choose my days and don't have my own children to take into account.
I’m going to enjoy every minute of it. It’s living history. I remember when the King died and the excitement of the Coronation of this beautiful and very young woman. What awful responsibility. It doesn’t bother me at all that she’s royalty and I’m not. I couldn’t do and wouldn’t want her job. However. I admire her constancy and dedication and think we’re so lucky to have her. During the pandemic. She was the only person who spoke any sense at all! She has acquired such knowledge and wisdom over 70 years and we won’t realise what we’ve had till she is gone!
Kalu I’m really pleased you are celebrating your family visiting you after 3 years. I’m in the same position it will be three years since I have seen my DS n
family. That will be one big celebration. All due to Covid restrictions. I hope the Jubilee weekend is lovely for all those who wish to celebrate it in whatever way they wish
Under the poverty line - typo!!
With so many of her 'subjects' barely surviving under the poverty level be and food banks being emptied at increasing speed, I find the whole "celebration" crass, vulgar and decadent. I hope the monarchy ends with her reign. Now that would be something to celebrate!!

If anyone else asks me if I'm doing anything for the Jubilee I shall tell them where to put their royal sceptre. However, even as a republican, I have respect for the Queen and her dedication to duty. It's just that I dislike the commercial bandwagon effect whereby everyone is expected to do something because others are doing it.
I remember the Coronation well and the tiny black & white TV that I, my family and neighbours gathered round to watch. Last night's BBC programme of the film archive of the Queen's life included some remarkable footage of historic interest to all, whether monarchist or republican.
I loved the story that came out in February of a Chinese manufacturer who produced thousands of cups, mugs and plates to mark the 70 year reign, each of them stamped "Platinum Jubbly". So cheers everyone, enjoy your platinum jubbly in whatever way you choose to spend it.
We are going away for the week with our little dog as we think there maybe fireworks and she is terrified of them
When you live alone and have no close friends it really is just another day and no doubt even TV will be disrupted
Seem to have hit a nerve Lucca.
Are we celebrating a woman's subsisting on the public purse for 70 years?

^It has been carefully timed so no school workers get extra time off!^
jocork our local primary school is having an extra day off on Monday 6th June to make sure the staff don't lose the benefit of the Jubilee Bank Holiday.
Friday 30th June is an extra day off for my school too.
Yes. A lot of misery on here that I've read so far. Such a shame. Will probably be the last Jubilee for her Majesty. I'm going to London early Thursday morning to see what I can see. First time ever for me experiencing a royal occasion. I'm very excited about it indeed. Perhaps there will be more foreign visitors than British subjects if this thread is anything to go by.?
We are decorating the sitting room. Can’t bear all the nonsense and wish with hindsight that we had booked a trip abroad to escape it all.

The Queen's name is Elizabeth, diminutive Lizzie.
The word used to address Sturgeon is a made-up word designed to insult her.Nobody has ever called her Lizzie apart from people being deliberately disrespectful though volver, have they? I just don’t see the difference between calling one person names and another.
That's a fair comment Casdon. But there is a difference between calling a person by a form of their name, and using a made-up word that insults their integrity.

I get the impression that the Queen doesn't like "gushers" or false sentiments.
If not burdened with the responsibilities of being H of S I think she'd be a down-to-earth countrywoman.
The life she could have led.

Well, I shall enjoy watching Trooping The Colour, the fly past, the service at Westminster Abbey…..
If it doesn’t interest you, that’s fine. Looking at the travel chaos at Dover and elsewhere, I am pleased to be able to sit and enjoy it quietly at home, and not feel the need to dash off and escape the celebrations.
Whatever your thoughts on the monarchy and the Queen, this is a piece of history that no one, even the tiniest baby, will see again.
Well said ??

^Food Banks multiply, fuel costs spiral out of control, the homeless increase, the NHS struggles.
And we decide to celebrate the long life of one overprivileged woman^
Just that!
I’m not an anti Royalist and certainly don’t consider myself a misery but feel that it’s not the celebrations that I find inappropriate but the way she is spoken of by the various people who have been asked to speak about her. Helen Mirren’s speech at the Windsor Horse Show where she thanked the Queen “from the bottom of our hearts” is one and from the look of the Queen’s face when she said it I’m not sure she liked it either. She has devoted her life to this country but it’s been a life supported by all the advantages of her position. She has never known the worry of paying day to day bills or NHS waiting lists. Although she has had to fulfill numerous public engagements but these are balanced by long breaks at many of her other homes. Perhaps in view of the huge disparity between her life and those of her people the National Celebration should just be the Thanksgiving Service and then we would also be spared the never ending debate about who should be on the balcony. I can’t imagine that many people will be pleased to see either Harry and Meghan or Andrew being there and out of respect to the public’s opinions I think the Queen will be wrong to include them.
And I thought I was a grumpy old cynic! I'm with Notgran(??).
Can you honestly say that you would find it easy to work for 70 years , until you are well into your 90s?
Could you maintain an impartial, gracious and interested attitude whilst meeting and greeting, listening to long monotonous speeches, visiting endless boring institutions etc? Could you restrain yourself from showing your emotions in public, but show appreciation for all the boring so called entertainment put on for you?
Yes, there are perks, but she pays very dearly by not having much of a private life.
I won't be participating in any celebrations, but I will drink a toast to her.
