Enough with the jubilee already.
(689 Posts)The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.
I'm with volver and Lucca.
We're all entitled to voice our opinions.
Lucca
*Who do you want to represent us? Trump? Putin? Thought not*
Not that again for goodness sake. Those two obviously being the only alternative…….dear oh dear.
I agree. Yawn yawn.
Ah, great Cherrytree59.
So what's with the bunting and flags flying everywhere ?
Come to the town where I live. No bunting, no decorated shops, no street parties. That's how averages work.
Do you think its OK for me to go and nurse my wrath glamping in the wilds of Scotland to miss out on the whole sorry mess altogether? While you nurse the misconception that the whole country is just overwhelmed with jubilee joyfulness?
Hmm
So what's with the bunting and flags flying everywhere ?
Shops windows all decorated. Schools and nurseries holding jubilee events .
Our village and neighbouring towns are holding all day events with live bands in the evening.
Childrens competition and sports.
And then there's the street parties ? .
Still it's a free country
So no problem with staying indoors/garden and with fingers in ears la la.
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm
Menopaws of course you can voice your opinions. So can "the likes" of Lucca and me.
TBH I am quite honoured to be in the company of "the likes" of Lucca.

I think our country is more united than those in the Gransnet bubble.
I don't think so...
Er yes you are entitled to an opinion and people are entitled to respond to that opinion it's sort of how it works.
I've far better things to do than argue with the likes of Lucca and Volver, I am entitled to an opinion and to voice it when prompted and I have not got to this age to care what others think but being part of an interesting discussion is fun, informative and is best shared in a light hearted but honest way so we are then able to get a rounded view of today's issues.
There is no need for the hostility, I don't care if you agree or disagree, that was never the point.
No little plastic flag-waving, nor Jubilee cup-cakes for me, but I will look at it with interest as part of our history which will one day feature in history books and magazines - the photo's might have that 'faded' look that those 1953 street parties have... that's assuming books and magazines are still being printed and that everything's not gone digital by that time.
I'm not going to rain on anyone's parade though.
It did occur to me whether Elizabeth is actually looking forward to this event. When some friends of mine wanted to do something "really special" for my 80th birthday, my heart sank... I just wanted a quiet day with my partner. The Queen is 96, I can't believe she doesn't feel weary. I know she's used to pageantry etc, but maybe she'd also rather just put her feet up, so to speak. We'll never know.
I think our country is more united than those in the Gransnet bubble.
I don’t think the country will ever be united on the future of the Royal Family. I also don’t think the country will ever be united on the choice of a president. We are destined to have different views for ever. Long may the freedom to have our own opinions and freely state them last.
Oh dear, did we disagree with you? Never mind.
I'm out, enjoy your weekend everyone!

Shouldn't we just be quietly proud of what we are witnessing? Put your feelings aside and see it for the historic event it is, yes the commercialism is annoying and Harry etc etc but I, for one, am proud to witness history in my country.
I will be taking advantage of the extra days to see my family and the only royal thing I'm doing is popping into a 'street party' at the nursing home I work at and I will no doubt witness a lot of people, the same age as the Queen (inc my own Mum) waving a flag and eating a tricolour cupcake and, those that can, will no doubt remember the beginning of her reign with a fondness of their own youthful memories, no doubt shared with their long departed families.
I'm sure they deserve to see the following generations raise a flag too, even if the monarchy has shifted over the years.
Who do you want to represent us? Trump? Putin? Thought not.
But I’m not “quietly proud” of what I’m witnessing. All we’re witnessing is a lady who has lived a long time and who has manged to keep her true character a secret for all those years. We know nothing about her other than she has made sure that nothing has really happened to the role of Head of State. So I see nothing to be “quietly proud” about. Commercialism and Harry have nothing to do with it, absolutely nothing at all.
My DF is about 10 years younger than the Queen. As a conscript he stood in the Mall on parade on the day of the coronation. He remembers the rain, the men he was with and the Queen of Tonga in her open carriage. He doesn’t have a sentimental attachment to Queen Elizabeth and if you gave him a tri-colour cupcake and a wee flag he would probably think you were treating him like a child. He certainly wouldn’t want to see me with a wee flag and some bunting, he'd think it was silly. He’s been a standard bearer and a parade commander for ex-servicemen’s organisations for decades, he doesn’t want a daft wee flag and someone singing Sweet Caroline.
Who do I want to represent us? Someone we have chosen, someone the whole country has chosen. Not an old lady with a nice line in hats who only has the job because her dad did.
Ps our local Polish centre are also putting on jubilee events this week.
My grandchildren had lovely jubilee celebration week at school.
Also a school jubilee picnic.
Parents and grandparents invited to take part last Thursday
School decorated, pupils and children all dressed in red white and blue.
We are on a UK break this week (booked last year) I have bought Bunting , our grandsons are going decorate the caravan .
We are missing out on quite a few village events.
Our village looking quite festive .
Union Jacks and Ukraine flags flying.
I'm sure those with Ukrainian guest will be happy to share a happy event.
I haven't heard one moan or indeed whinge 're the Jubilee festivities in real life .
Also no complaints from my family and friends North of the border.
Just here on Gransnet.
Over on Mumsnet there has been several discussions about how people are proposing to celebrate.
You asked about those two and then did “shut up” argument cliché “thought not”.
Of course they are not the only alternative but familiar names of leaders with no sense of history or long term good for their own countries, unlike the Queen.
Who do you want to represent us? Trump? Putin? Thought not
Not that again for goodness sake. Those two obviously being the only alternative…….dear oh dear.
I've no idea how to answer that...absolutely no idea what's going on...
Volver Surely anyone that doesn't vote snp would be able to pay the 50p tae get tae Fife ?

It is possibly to celebrate without fawning
It’s also possible to not celebrate without being miserable or a Scrooge .?
