Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

Thanks for reminding me, nandad, that DD1 will no doubt be sneaking in a themed quiz at our do. We’re a competitive lot. I’d better get a bit of revision done. smile

They will take the bank holiday though wont they? Well yes I will as the alternative is to break into an empty school building.

I'm confused. Are we celebrating the day the Queen was crowned (1953) or the day of her accession to the throne (1952) or somewhere in between? My (poor) maths makes it 1952, but why June when her father died in February?

All the naysayers can do their own thing but there's no need to try to spoil it for people who do want to enjoy themselves.

Our Republican neighbours are joining in a party because we're having a get together after a few years of misery.

IT'S NOT COMPULSORY
No-one is going to be press-ganged into joining in.

Oh dear - live and let live?
I rather like HM and get quite teary at brass bands, processions of mounted guardsmen and all that.
But I am not a “joiner- in” so the idea of the enforced jollity of street parties would have me running a mile unless it involved my closest neighbours in which case I would enjoy being actively involved.
Inviting my sis-in-law for the weekend so that I don’t feel a Billy no mates and I might serve Coronation Chicken and my take on that trifle (lemon curd sponge or Swiss roll, lemon posset and cream - no jelly ) and going to a lovely concert at MK theatre of every possible Coronation related piece of choral music
So good luck to those who enjoy this sort of thing. I admit I am enjoying some of the documentaries on TV looking back at the last 70 years.
Is it all over done? Probably- that seems to be the way of things. But I am not going to moan about it any more than I would be likely to wave a Union Jack!

Because it's a convenient time.

So that some people can call it a Bank Holiday party?

if there's one thing I hate it's enforced jollity and bunting. Have your street parties, nobody's stopping you. But we don't all have to join in.

Hear hear! ?

Presumably because the weather will be better, plus a nod to the coronation date.

Aveline Sun 29-May-22 09:51:44

Read back. It's quite clear why the date was set.

I've got blue trousers and a white top ready. Any suggestions for something red?

A hat.

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 09:53:18

The year of the Queen’s accession, presumably and June as being a) closer to her “official” birthday, b) the Coronation month, plus possibly c) the likelihood of better weather and maybe d) the absence of any Covid restrictions?

Possibly there are those who don’t have the opportunity to have “all the family” round or join a community party ?
Are they to be called miserable when there is soooo much Jubilee stuff on tv etc ? It’s like the “Scrooge “ name calling if people don’t rave about Christmas,

volver Sun 29-May-22 09:58:09

who doesn’t love The Queen.

ermm...keep quiet volver, say nothing.... ?

I've only seen one thing on TV and that was the Royal Windsor Horse Show which I enjoyed (mostly).

Is there a lot on TV?

Last night was football ......... ⚽️
I got on with some handicrafts

Keep quiet and eat your trifle

I won't be peering through my curtains with a "cob on", at people having a nice time. I'll be watching for dolphins from the front of my pod and hoping the seals come into the garden, like last year.

Enjoy your trifle and forelock tugging, though.

I agree. Some do just like a jolly good knees up. Others don’t. Some are trying to persuade me to go to village celebrations as bringing me back from Covid reclusiveness, butt dd is away and dh won’t go so I wouldn’t want to go on my own anyway. I will be happily doing some gardening.

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 10:05:09

There is a happy medium between avoiding any festivities and
a jolly good knees up as you put it.

That makes it sound like Blackpool and bingo!!

Some of us are rather more sophisticated than that!

maddyone Sun 29-May-22 10:06:26

I’m not celebrating, I’m not interested in it all. I’m on holiday with my family.

I used to go to bingo with my MiL. Loved it. Bought my first tansad, as they were called, with winnings.

ginny Sun 29-May-22 10:16:15

I’m certainly not miserable or curmudgeonly. I shall enjoy our street gathering and contribute to the refreshments but as some others have said I doubt the Queen will pass through my mind much. I’ll say no more as I don’t want to upset anyone.
