Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

I'm confused. Are we celebrating the day the Queen was crowned (1953) or the day of her accession to the throne (1952) or somewhere in between? My (poor) maths makes it 1952, but why June when her father died in February?

It appears that we are celebrating her being sovereign for 70 years.

Though the events starting on the 69th anniversary of her Coronation.

The significant anniversary years of her accession to the throne are usually noted on the news, but not celebrated, as it would be unseemly as it only happened the moment her father passed away.

I remember hearing it on the radio news that it was the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne and that she was spending the day privately with the Queen Mother.

Naturally enough, it was 25 years since the passing of her father and her mother's husband.

I’m so glad my village isn’t doing anything. Just the annual (well, annual before covid) Church fete the following Saturday to avoid clashing with other celebrations. Bliss!

My fir tree outside the front door was dressed in its bunting yesterday afternoon and I'm looking forward to our street party on Thursday as a chance to meet the newish neighbours. Not particularly 'royalist' but I'm pleased to join in with a national celebration.

Then I shall be glad to get on with the rest of the weekend as usual!
It's nice to have something cheerful to talk about.

The railway museum is having a jubilee event. I shall have a wander around the marina and wave to the children on the dressed up steam trains. At home we will enjoy a chicken sandwich with Coronation mayonnaise and eat a bowl of raspberry trifle. I do have a jubilee pencil because I’m a magpie and couldn’t resist the crown topper grin

Last night our neighbours had a party -so loud the bass made me feel sick ( I have ADHD) it want on until 0130. They had a DJ who announced there will be a party next Jubilee weekend. Throw fireworks into the mix and it’s going to be hell.

Callistemon21 Sun 29-May-22 10:45:51

Fireworks? Loud music?
That sounds OTT, poor you.

You could have phoned the police if it went on until 1.30 am

Our Jubilee party will be a gentle, pleasant affair. Just nieghbours getting together to toast Her Majesty and enjoying each others company. We're also planting a tree. Jubilee celebrations don't have to be vulgar extravaganzas.
Do come too "volver*. Promise not to force feed you trifle!!

Margiknot Sun 29-May-22 10:50:34

Joseanne, I think we are celebrating 70 year’s reign, but the exact date in February when the Queen became queen 70 years ago is also the date her father died- so not a date to celebrate!
We have put up a jubilee flag, ( as the old flag pole for our little community is in our garden) but not planned anything else.
I watched the silver jubilee procession just outside St Paul’s cathedral in 1977, as a student in London, having bedded down on the pavement overnight to get a good view. It was certainly worth seeing. I don’t remember any parties but then we all had exams to sit. I might see if I can find the old photos.
This jubilee feels very different- more subdued.

My very thoughts.

Reading this thread has been quite enlightening. I thought I was the only one who is underwhelmed by the Jubilee celebrations. In fact, the long reign over us has convinced me that it is time for a radical change of how the monarchy works. Still , hold on to that bunting as it will be needed for the celebrations of the Queen’s 100th birthday and that will be another landmark occasion.

Thank you for the invitation Aveline, I respectfully decline wink

So that will be 2026, then in 2027 the bunting can come out again for 75 years which is an even bigger number in terms of celebrations.

I've got blue trousers and a white top ready. Any suggestions for something red?

The blood of the working classes?

God, you crack me up Volver. You are one of the few people that make me laugh on GN.

Boz Sun 29-May-22 11:02:19

I haven't met anyone who cares. A lot of people are just going on holiday - myself included.

Gillycats Sun 29-May-22 11:02:33

The aircraft used in fly past’s are hardly clapped out, or do you consider the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to be old and clapped out? I think most of us are glad to have something to celebrate and enjoy after the events of the past couple of years.

volver Sun 29-May-22 11:06:49

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is made up of Lancasters, Hurricanes, Dakotas, Chipmunks and Spitfires. I love a fly past but none of those are cutting edge any more

henetha Sun 29-May-22 11:11:18

I still remember the huge street parties at the end of WW2 when I was nearly 8. They have always been a fun way of celebrating in our communities. Having said that, we aren't having one around here so I'm not going to any.
But I am happy to celebrate the Queen's accession, it is historic as she is our longest reigning monarch ever. I shall watch it on television, and I'm going to make the jubilee pud.
Millions are going to enjoy it, regardless.

if there's one thing I hate it's enforced jollity and bunting. Have your street parties, nobody's stopping you. But we don't all have to join in.

I agree Volver.

volver Sun 29-May-22 11:13:37

I can appreciate why people would want to spontaneously celebrate the end of a Europe-wide conflict that resulted in many thousands of deaths.

Rich lady lives to very old age? Well I know lots of very old ladies, none of them merited a flypast.

Possibly there are those who don’t have the opportunity to have “all the family” round or join a community party ?
Are they to be called miserable when there is soooo much Jubilee stuff on tv etc ? It’s like the “Scrooge “ name calling if people don’t rave about Christmas,

I agree.
Some people are going through tough times.

rafichagran Sun 29-May-22 11:41:06

No party in our road, I dont begrudge others their fun, but my good time will be at home, reading ,garden and whatever comes up.
I may also see my Grandson over the weekend.

BlueBelle Sun 29-May-22 11:41:35

Well I neither love nor hate the queen I don’t know her I ve never met her so have no opinion of her as a person really, I think she has done really well and looks great for her advanced years I wish her nothing but happiness and peace however I have no feeling s of wanting to wave a flag, wear red white and blue or be an adoring subject if I met her in person I would not curtsy as I believe she is no more a person than I am if she curtsied to me I would return the honour I believe every human should be given kindness and respect not just someone who was born to a richer life than me

rafichagran Sun 29-May-22 11:42:17

I have thought that as well Lucca
