Enough with the jubilee already.

The celebrations haven’t started yet and I’m already fed up with them.
I bought a loaf of bread yesterday and it had a silver crown on it and a jubilee message. When I think of the cost of redesign and printing a new message, it must impact on the price I’m paying.
Then I’ve just seen the itinerary for next week and I’m bemused by the timetable.
There’s a glorious fly past again with 40 planes and helicopters etc. I always remember my husband laughing at previous fly pasts as the UK has such a paucity of planes to do it that some of them were training planes and clapped out aircraft to bulk up the numbers.
I also didn’t realise the bank holidays were Thursday and Friday.
Oh well soon be over and we can have an in depth examination of Meghan and Harry and what they did/didn’t do, who wore what and how much did it cost etc. Ammunition for news articles for months and posts on gransnet.
Bring it on.

That's true, Maggiemaybe.

I'm quite happy with the RF, I'm not a flag waving fan but they don't bother me. I couldn't be bothered with being anti.

However I will say I'm surprised by how many people ARE getting very engaged with this celebration.

We live in a rural area but the village is having some shindig. Friends of mine who I thought would not be remotely interested are having/going to street parties. One of my daughters is getting quite involved with the local school/church.

So good luck to them. I have no interest in going to a party. I'll probably see the odd clips on TV. Quite like fly pasts. Not really my thing but I hope all involved have a wonderful time.

Just wondering if people are finding this whole thing completely mystifying? The whole thing about not supporting the monarchy and not wanting to indulge in flag waving and tri-colour cupcakes?

Is it a widespread belief that "everybody" loves/respects/admires the Queen so there will be no dissent whatsoever? Do you think that people are really surprised that the Republicans (and anti-party people wink) are more numerous than they thought?

Joseanne Tue 31-May-22 18:01:16

I bet they're adorable Jenn53. The children always steal the show!

Jenn53 Tue 31-May-22 17:55:14

"Joseanne", you are absolutely right, it is not about them at all, but they are the ones I personally want to see. I am sure the Queen too will be happy to sit at home, feet up watching the spectacle on TV perhaps indulging her great-grandchildren whom she hasn't been able to see and having a giggle away from the shenanigans!

Kath is a very traditional first name. One of Henry VIII’s wives was called Kath.

Weren't there 2 Katherine Parr and Catherine Howard?

There were (sort of) three.

Catherine of Aragon
Catherine Howard
Katherine Parr

I was thinking only the latter would be Kath with a K (she wouldn't really, of course, she'd be Kate if anything).

Joseanne Tue 31-May-22 17:36:12

Why Jenn53? It isn't about them at all.

Jenn53 Tue 31-May-22 17:24:29

Me too! All I am eagerly waiting to see are the Queen's never seen, great-grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet!! Will they be seen in public? I do hope so.

Anniel Tue 31-May-22 17:23:59

“Not Kath” though! They were Catherine of Aragon, Catherine Howard and the one with a K was Katherine Parr.

Not all of us, no. A lot of us though.

Paddyann There are plenty of Scots celebrating the Jubilee. In a village near me they had a jubilee party at the weekend, Union flags were being flown, the school children told the story of our Queen, Posters of HM in windows throughout the village. Hundreds of people had descended on the rural village, many had travelled from over 30 miles away to be there. Not all Scots want the monarchy to end.

Some of you are determined to be rude …My Daughter is Elizabeth ofcourse! I enjoyed Kath and Kim on TV but my children all have traditional Christian names. Somehow I feel that I am an outsider here and not welcome.Dismissed as a Conservative although I grew up during WW2 in a Council house in Liverpool.and have worked in public service all my working life.

I'm a Conservative too - not terribly popular here but I can cope - and a royalist. I'm pleased that HM has achieved this unprecedented milestone but that doesn't mean I have to go wild, decorate my house and have a party with the entire village (which isn't having one as it happens). We can each enjoy ourselves, and if we wish congratulate HM, in our own way surely? Do we have to make a public show of it?

Nobody who is posting on here is ignoring the Jubilee though, Callistemon21 is right. Whether for or against, if you have an opinion and voice it, you’re not ignoring it. The ignorers are the disinterested.

nadateturbe Tue 31-May-22 17:01:45

The majority support the monarchy but not all.

In May 2021, a YouGov poll put support for the monarchy down at 61% (with 24% against) among all over-18s, with a particularly high rise in republican views and an overall plurality for its replacement with an elected head of state in the 18–24 age group (41%–31%).[34] The poll also suggested significant reductions in support for the monarchy in 25–49 year olds, and a slight fall in support among over 65s.

What is wrong with all of you who will ignore the Jubilee?

Nothing at all.

Three if you count Catherine of Aragon

Could have been Cath, Cathy, Cat or Kate though ??

"They" are not ignoring it at all, Annie1

In fact, they're talking about it more than most who are quietly preparing to enjoy it ?

With all respect Annie1, that's not what you say to people you want to be friendly with.

I've just been to a Jubilee Lunch. I respectfully bowed my head when prayers were said for HM. I did think of some of the posts on here! The food was excellent though, so I'm pleased I went. Perhaps the Jubilee isn't so bad not when there's a free lunch in it (and no Corgis were hurt in the production of the lunch)!
