Subject: Taps aff syndrome, a West of Scotland phenomenon, or is it common throught the UK?
Rationale: This research aims to investigate the prevalence and reasons for Tapps aff syndrome during hot weather in Glasgow and surrounding areas.
Definition of ^Tapps aff (tops off) : The practice of males removing the top half of their clothing, as soon as there is the tiniest glimmer of sun, regardless of temperature, location or appropriateness.
Criteria: , subjects males of all ages, ideally peely wally (extremely pale skinned), possess a beer belly, exposed bum cleavage, and be sweating profusely.
Further investigations will be conducted as to why there is a definite lack of toned, tanned, bodies.
Does this indicate that those who do take their tops off are delusional and think this is actually an attractive look, where the others feel no need to expose themselves?
Habitat: all public places, the more inappropriate, the better. E.G the fresh food aisles in supermarkets, crowded public transport and eateries.
The research will investigate whether there is a cultural element or it is genetic.
Furthermore the prevalence in certain locations will be investigated, with particular emphasis on Taps aff hot spots..
Glasgow City Centre is already a well known one.

Fanny, I actally was seriously thinking of doing a PhD. I only needed another year of research, but as it had an education theme and was work based, my poor health put paid to that.
I was a serial student!
Living alongside a member of the family who did an M.D and one who did a PhD. I would never truly consider doing one.
If I mythically did it would be into the inability of men's brains to tell them to pick things off the floor or help when you miss place something instead of saying 'Well it will be where you left it." Yet expect the whole house to help find what they have mislaid.

Fanny my thesis for my MSc was based on my research into breaking down barriers to learning.
I became hooked on finding about about how the brain worked, muliple intelligences, left brain/right brain dominance and finding strategies to help overcome those barriers. It was such a huge subject.
If I had been able to continue, I think I would have researched the impact of deprivation and lack of nurture on those pupils, who either didn't want to learn or couldn't. I once heard a talk by the former Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, on research done in the town I taught in, on this subject. It was fascinating.
I'm getting boring now! .

(as in why oh why when it is a glorious sunny day do young men (mainly) feel they have to open their car windows and put the stereo on to full volume)

It's universal. This is known as the Beijing bikini. Although not restricted to Beijing obviously.

What exactly are you meaning by "deprivation and lack of nurture"? Are they two separate things, or linked?
I know that muscles strengthen by using them.
Is there a sort of brain equivalent of a muscle that strengthens by using it?
For example, if the government gave every child, aged 2 or 3, a set of megabloks to play with, funded from general taxation, would that have a great effect on the children's abilities as they got older?
And so on, with other educational toys, at various ages.

Deprivation and lack of nurture may be interlinked, but they can also exist in isolation.
Your suggestion of giving each child educational toys is very simplistic and would not really have any impact.
I suggest you Google, Lack of nurture and brain scans, that would be a start.

However, this was meant to be a lighthearted thread and I do not wish to spoil it.
