Because he may have difficulties articulating his problem.

He was behaving like a normal 4 year old bored at being dragged along dutifully to an occasion that was unsuited to his age.

Kate was behaving like a normal 'smiling through gritted teeth, but I'd love to give him what for' parent stuck in a public place with her misbehaving offspring.

In other words a perfectly normal mother and child.

Of course they would have been bored, but they were brought up not to behave selfishly as to discomfort other other people. I could trust them to behave in all social situations.
