They didn’t have the sophisticated diagnostic techniques that we have today Kate.

This was the 1950s.

Or it could have been an illness or condition for which the doctor didn’t have a name, but would nowadays.

Unfortunately as we know, things happen to healthy, happy babies. My brother died at 9 months old. Perfectly healthy. He developed severe excema. They took him into hospital where he caught pneumonia and died.

As BigBertha says, it sounds as if it could have been SIDS (Sudden Infants Death Syndrome). So sad.

Sadly it could be Infant Cot Death.

I’ve just started my family tree and found that there was a baby born in the 1950’s in Scotland who died at 9 months old. The reason on the birth certificate was ‘Natural Causes’. I have seen pictures of the baby boy sitting up at about 8 months old and he looked perfectly healthy so I’m wondering what Natural Causes could mean. SIDS maybe? Any ideas anyone? Many thanks
