I noticed in that video one man used thick slices of potato and called them scollops.

I remember from, oh it is well over fifty years ago now, that a local Fish & Chips shop used to do what they called a scollop, each was a thick slice of potato, dipped in batter and deep fried. A bag of chips with two scollops and a pickled onion and a bit of pickled onion vinegar on the chips was quite a treat.

Back then, gluten in the batter, deep-fried in fat, never even thought about it! Just how it was.
