A very nostalgic (cheap!) lunch

Dh recently visited our old university for a talk, inc. a diversion to the ‘coffee lounge’ where we met over 50 years ago.

But it also reminded me of the meal I used to buy in the same student union building when particularly skint, which was much of the time. Tinned tomatoes on toast, 9d!!

I’ve just made myself the same, on wholewheat toast, and very nice too. Of course back then we weren’t aware that cooked tomatoes are even better for you than fresh ones. It was probably white Mother’s Pride or similar then, though.

Gawd some of 'em on here are 'tinned food snobs'....??there's nothing wrong with a tinned tomato..good job there's no food rationing eh??

I agree with everyone who can't fancy tinned tomatoes except as an ingredient in a dish. But I love beans, egg, mushrooms ,(not all at once ) on toast. Favourite quick supper is a feta and tomato sandwich, mmm ! Must be on crusty bread, white or brown.

Takes me back to when i stayed over at my best friends flat whenever we'd had a night out, and then we were skint so had tinned tomatoes on toast with crumbled in oxo cube for flavour, lovely. Not had that for years.??

If I had some fresh tomatoes that are getting to the stage that they need to be used I cut them up, put them in a dish and add grated cheese, then microwave this for couple of mins and tip onto toast, lovely lunch, or sometimes even for an evening meal if I can't be bothered to do anything else.

Even better is grill tomatoes on toast, cover with grated cheese - grill until well browned and then top with a poached egg -totally scrumptious

That was my favourite at college too. Happy memories!

I do not like soggy toast. So tinned tomatoes on toast have never been on my plate.
When I do scrambled eggs, I have the toast on the side.

My favourite student Union lunch was a cheese and onion roll - a generous wodge of French bread with thick slices of cheese and onion in it. Can’t remember the price, but all the food in the Union cafe was pretty cheap.

In 1972, aged 18 and living in the nurses’ home your choice of evening meal was tinned tomatoes, baked beans, egg or cheese on one slice of sliced white bread. We were constantly hungry ?

Uni Sunday breakfast for those who got up in time, or those who hadn't got as far as bed, was bread briefly dipped in mixed egg. Then shallow fried & served with tinned plum tomatoes. Like a savoury version of French Toast. Delicious!

Love tomatoes on toast .... with a splash of Worcester sauce grin)

I love tinned tomatoes. So many uses including on toast. James Martin even makes soup from Italian tinned tomatoes.

Bacon and tinned tomatoes - yummy

No longer do you seem to see bags of 'frying' tomatoes on the market. They were delicious grilled on toast.

If I have any tomatoes going a bit on the soft side. I cut them in half and freeze them. They can be used in recipes

Do you ever make pizza toast ? Lightly toast bread first then spread Tom paste, a sprinkling of oregano then grated cheddar cheese. A dash of olive oil if wanted. Delicious!

How have I never had this before. I've had sliced tomato with cheese on toast, but never thought of tinned tomatoes.

I went to a boarding school and our main meal of the day was a "proper" lunch with pudding, but we had high tea at 5.00. All sorts of ghastly food: spam fritters, mince on toast (!), tinned spaghetti on toast. Baked beans or tomatoes were a blessed relief from the awfulness...
I need hardly add that the toast was "buttered" with nasty tasting marge.

Boarding school Saturday morning breakfast ….. every Saturday …. for seven years!

When I first moved to London in the 80s I lived in a hostel, and they served tinned tomatoes for breakfast. I'd never seen tinned tomatoes used in anyway outside of a sauce before and I have to say the sight of them on plates in the morning used to make me feel sick. My friends ate them with gusto so I had breakfast alone most days ?

I can't bear tinned tomatoes unless in a sauce. My Granny used to use them in sandwiches. I've never got over the horrible sogginess of those. Yuk!

JaneJudge Sun 12-Jun-22 14:14:52

my other half likes tinned tomatoes on toast but I don't like how it makes the toast soggy!

Auntieflo Sun 12-Jun-22 14:11:27

I love fresh tomatoes, but could never eat cooked tomatoes.
That is until I went camping with the guides. I suppose it was the smoky flavour that got added from the outdoor cooking.

My favourite lunch, when on my own is, grated cheese on toast, popped under the grill until bubbling, then topped with sliced pickled beetroot. Delicious.

I love tinned tomatoes on toast with a spot of vinegar.

My DH often has tinned plum tomatoes, seasoned with salt and pepper, on toast, Personally, I'm not keen.

Occasionally, he jazzes them up with garlic and mixed herbs. I find those much nicer, and even the DGC like them.

When our sons were young, DH often made them a simple supper on a Sunday (about the only cooking he ever did).
He mixed a tin of chopped tomatoes with a tin of chopped spaghetti in tomato sauce -both as cheap as chips - then grated cheese on top and put it in the oven until the cheese was bubbly and golden. Served with hot buttered toast, it went down a treat.

Tinned tomatoes on toast with Worcestershire sauce, ditto cheese on toast. Yum.

SachaMac Sun 12-Jun-22 13:10:04

I tend to use tinned tomatoes in stews, curry’s, chillies etc but do very occasionally have them on toast. I like them to be simmered right down so the juices have reduced & thickened up, served with plenty of salt & black pepper & a dash of Worcester Sauce. A cheap meal too.

If I have cherry tomatoes that are past their best I put them in the microwave with a little water and a lot of butter. I cook them until they are soft and have them on toast for lunch. Delicious! smile
