A very nostalgic (cheap!) lunch

Tinned tomatoes are an ingredient, not a foodstuff that can stand alone. I hate it when we stay at a hotel and the tomatoes with the cooked breakfast are tinned.

I love (fresh) tomatoes, grilled on toast, as a vegatable side with omelettes, chops, steak, omelette etc, but thebplace for tinned tomatoes is in a pan or casserole with the incredients of a casserole, meat sauce or other made up dish.

My cheap meal from the Students Union was a small bread roll, pat of butter and filled with cheese and onion crisps! I still love a crisp sandwich but it has to be white bread.

I’ve never eaten tomatoes unless they are cooked in a sauce. When working I used to just have an apple lunchtime, no wonder I was a 10. Now I can’t resist food.

Well it’s got to be beans on toast with a sprinkle of grated cheese! Cheap, healthy and filling, my DC grew up on them when money was tight!

Tinned toms need pepper and a little sugar

PPTs as my DH calls them. Peeled plum tomatoes.
They’re a regular breakfast for me twice a week and they have to be on sour dough toast. Fresh tomatoes don’t quite match the tinned version.

I grow them though to use in cooking and freshly sliced with mozzarella and salads.

We used to have them for tea after we arrived home from school. Tinned toms often have more flavour than fresh, especially those that are grown in poly tunnels.

Years ago Elizabeth David visited an Israeli tomato grower with acre of poly tunnels filled with tomatoes. As she left the tunnels she noticed few plants growing outside and asked why the farmer didn't grow more like them for the UK. The answer was that the supermarkets wouldn't buy them because they had to fit in plastic packs and be a uniform shape because that's how the housewives liked them.

My guilty cheap lunch that is also probably not in the least nutritional is a packet of chicken SupaNoodles! Awful to admit but that packet of dust powder to sprinkle over them in the pan is, to me (!) delicious. Move over Nigella.

A guilty pleasure once in a blue moon, tinned tomatoes on fried bread. My mouth waters at the thought of it ?

BlueBelle Sun 12-Jun-22 11:48:05

I often have tinned toms on toast I think I like the tinned ones better than fresh but I hate tomato soup I don’t think it tastes anything like tomatoes
Grate a bit of cheese on top of the tinned toms on toast

Tomatoes on toast is one of my favourite breakfast dishes.

Blossoming Sun 12-Jun-22 11:15:47

Ugh, no, sorry! I use canned tomatoes for making sauces, chilli, etc. but could not eat them on their own.

Callistemon21 Sun 12-Jun-22 11:03:54

Ps it was dinner

Callistemon21 Sun 12-Jun-22 11:03:13

We used to have baked beans and an egg on toast.

I really dislike baked beans with eggs now ? although I do eat either separately on toast now.

Redhead56 Sun 12-Jun-22 11:01:18

That was going to be my next comment a poached egg!

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 12-Jun-22 11:00:45

Oh my - that takes me back...

Baggs Sun 12-Jun-22 10:57:50

I've never had that, witz, but I shall have it soon! Thanks for the idea.

teabagwoman Sun 12-Jun-22 10:53:03

Even better with a poached egg on top.

Redhead56 Sun 12-Jun-22 10:52:07

I often have tinned tomatoes on toast there is nothing tastier. With lots of butter on the toast and white pepper the simpler the better.

rafichagran Sun 12-Jun-22 10:47:59

I love tinned tomatoes on toast.

H1954 Sun 12-Jun-22 10:41:06

Ooh, Witzend, I now know what I'm having for lunch! I love tomatoes in toast and didn't realise the health benefits of cooked ones either.

Dh recently visited our old university for a talk, inc. a diversion to the ‘coffee lounge’ where we met over 50 years ago.

But it also reminded me of the meal I used to buy in the same student union building when particularly skint, which was much of the time. Tinned tomatoes on toast, 9d!!

I’ve just made myself the same, on wholewheat toast, and very nice too. Of course back then we weren’t aware that cooked tomatoes are even better for you than fresh ones. It was probably white Mother’s Pride or similar then, though.
